Increasing risk associated with the adoption of Open source

The adoption of #opensourcesoftware has been steadily increasing over the years, as more organizations recognize the benefits of using open source software in their IT environments.Recently, Endor Labs has introduced an OWASP-style listing of the most important or impactful risks inherent in the use of open source software (OSS).

Open source software has become increasingly popular over the years, as it offers many benefits such as cost savings, flexibility, and transparency. However, with the increasing adoption of open source software, there are also increasing concerns around security and risk.

One of the main risks associated with open source software is the potential for security vulnerabilities. Because open source software is developed by a community of contributors, there is a greater risk that vulnerabilities could be introduced by malicious actors or unintentionally by well-intentioned contributors.

  • Is Smartphone a double-edged sword??

    Is Smartphone a double-edged sword??

Sensors are devices which are used in #smartphones to detect various aspects of the environment. They sense data for which they are made and work according to that. There are various sensors which are available nowadays in smartphones which are in-built and help in functioning of the smartphone. Some of the most common sensors found in smartphones include the accelerometer, Bluetooth, GPS, light sensor, microphone, proximity sensor, and WiFi.

#Mobilephonemanufacturers offer new features and functionalities that have compelled users to use them. The versatility of the mobile phone allows seamless integration of work, fun, social interaction, and enhances the quality of life in many ways.

The smartphone is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it grants us the ability to use apps which can make us more organized, more accessible, and more informed. But on the other hand, it is a potentially strong mechanism of distraction, actually making us less productive.

Apps downloaded in the smartphone are data hungry. On average, social media apps, Cab booking Apps and food delivery apps collect the most data. If you are checking your email on your smartphone, in case of taking service of Gmail, it collects most of the data.

Other types of smartphone data collected include call logs, short message service (SMS) logs, app-use logs, and battery-status logs. Browsers and image editing apps collect the least. The 3 most data-hungry apps are all owned by Facebook: Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.

Your smartphone knows you better than anyone else in the world. It stores and captures all the data and stores somewhere, probably no one knows. You may be shocked to know that when you are talking to someone either over the phone or while your mobile phone is not switched off, then also your phone listens and records all your conversations.

Overuse of gadgets can make you age faster

An animal model study published in the journal “Frontiers in Aging” has unequivocally shown that humans age faster or are affected by blue light emitted from gadgets like smartphones and laptops. It has been found that the excessive use of these devices affects our eyesight and overall health rapidly.

Excessive exposure to blue light from everyday devices, like TVs, laptops and smartphones, harmful events occur in various cells in our body. It has been found to affect everything from skin and fat cells to sensory neurons. Strangely enough, researchers have made this discovery using flies.

It was found that chemicals that are essential for cells to function correctly -- are altered in fruit flies exposed to blue light.

The Researcher finds that the Flies exposed to blue light have been found to rapidly ‘turn on’ stress-protection genes, in contrast to flies kept in constant darkness for long periods of time.

To understand why this causes the flies to age faster, the scientists compared the levels of metabolites in flies exposed to blue light for two weeks to those in complete darkness.

Blue light exposure caused significant differences in the levels of metabolites measured by the researchers in the cells of fly heads. In particular, they found that the levels of the metabolite succinate were increased, but glutamate levels were lowered.

The changes recorded by the researchers suggest that the cells are operating at a suboptimal level, and this may cause their premature death, and further, explain their previous findings that blue light accelerates aging.

    Enterprises choosing to go offense

Today’s threat landscape is transforming at an unprecedented pace. Considering the intensity and effect of the cyberattacks, protecting the enterprises against threat actors is a herculean task. The data from the findings display the reality of where organizations stand in terms of their cybersecurity measure.

The research suggests that 27% of the Executives and 40% of the Chief Security Officers (CSOs) have accepted not being prepared to handle the new and intense cybersecurity threats that are emerging. Staggering data reveals that India alone from Jan 2022 to June 2022 has reported more than 6,74,000 cyberattacks with an estimated 200% YoY growth in the number of attacks.

A report says, organizations failing to counter the immensely evolving threat landscape say that it is important, now more than ever, to understand the switch C-Suite has to make in order to counter the ever-evolving attacks against their organizations. They are failing in being prepared and taking action, due to their traditional approach towards the attacks.

The companies are playing DEFENSE with the threat actors, which at this age and time are valid only for low-level, traditional threats or breaches. When it comes to the current threat landscape, enterprises need to go on the OFFENSE.

A report from Skybox has shown that organizations that have implemented a Risk-Based Cybersecurity approach have seen zero to few attacks. It is such research and analysis that has led Skybox to develop the industry’s most advanced and award-winning risk-based Vulnerability & Threat Management solution.

    The report revealed that:

    · 48% of organizations that had no breaches in 2021 were leaders in risk-based cybersecurity

    · 50% of the top performers in time to mitigate a breach were risk-based approach leaders

  • Botnets leading to DDoS Attacks

    Botnets leading to DDoS Attacks

There are millions of DDoS attacks from internet providers worldwide, including a wide range of regional providers, global transit and cloud companies. The distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack peaked at 26 million requests per second this past June. These massive botnet-induced attacks are targeting service providers. Carriers and cloud providers deployed billions of dollars of dedicated DDoS scrubber appliances and, for a time, gained the upper hand on the attackers.

These attacks are carried out to degrade or disable the performance and network communications of target systems. These targets can be small or large businesses, internet service providers, manufacturers, retailers, healthcare providers, schools and universities, or other nation-states. Essentially, any entity with an online presence can become a DDoS target.

The bots of a botnet can include computers, smartphones, virtualized machines, and/or a wide range of Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as IP cameras, smart TVs, routers, anything that has internet connectivity and can be compromised. In particular, IoT vulnerabilities and misconfigurations are extremely common in the consumer market making it very easy for hackers to create an IoT botnet.

The explosive growth in IoT and cloud computing paved the way for the rise of IoT botnets that amplifies DDoS attacks today. Combined with an increasingly lucrative extortion market, it represents a major shift in the DDoS threat landscape. This is a dangerous warning that the possibility of a sophisticated DDoS attack and a prolonged service outage will prevent businesses from growing.

IoT devices include a huge range of commercial and consumer devices such as temperature measurement systems, smart TVs, IP cameras, smart door bells, security systems, network routers & switches, and even children’s toys.

    The growing chip demand

When chip shortages first shut down automotive production lines in 2021, the #semiconductor industry found itself in an unaccustomed spotlight. Suddenly everyone was talking about the tiny chips that enable many different functions. When some high-tech and consumer-electronics companies began to experience chip shortages or voiced concerns about supply chains, the attention intensified. It’s now clear to all: We are living in a semiconductor world. Chip shortages have been aggravated by the pandemic and the confluence of problems has led to the semiconductor shortage.

Hello and welcome to VARINDIA news hour

India's chip demand is growing at nearly double the global rate each year. By 2030, India semiconductor demand is going to reach $110 billion. So, by that time, it will be over 10% of global demand.

In addition to a massive domestic market, India has an ample pool of engineers, which will help the country attract foreign investors and overhaul the local electronics industry.

India will spend $30 billion to overhaul in the tech industry and build up a chip supply chain and is aimed at increasing local production of semiconductors, displays, advanced chemicals, networking and telecom equipment as well as batteries and electronics, said Gourangalal Das, director-general of the India-Taipei Association, the South Asian country's de-facto embassy in Taipei. Das said his country is looking to bring in more mature chips. These include chips made with the relatively less advanced 65-nanometer to 28-nanometer production technologies and are widely used in connectivity chips, display drivers, controller chips for electronic products and electric vehicles.

The advantage of India is having a large number of engineers, natural resources for metals, gas and chemicals. For instance, India is the world's leading producer of sulfuric acid and ammonia, which, after being purified, can be used in chip manufacturing process

  • It is time to adopt a more inclusive approach to digital transformation

It is time to adopt a more inclusive approach to digital transformation

COVID-19 has pushed companies over the technology tipping point—and transformed businesses forever and that many of these changes could be here for the long haul. Digital adoption has taken a quantum leap at both the organizational and industry levels. The focus was on building new IT infrastructure, cloud technologies, VPN connectors and remote access servers for uninterrupted workflow with cyber-security taking a backseat. As the cyber-security posture relaxed, organisations experienced security breaches and data losses with business revenues taking a hit. In some cases, even the reputation of the brand was at stake. Today, India has over 82 unicorns with a total funding of over $39 billion from 2014 till December 4, 2021. Almost two years into the pandemic, the world continues to rely heavily on technology for everyday life activities – and it does not seem that this will change any time soon. It is estimated that global internet traffic in 2022 will exceed all the internet traffic up to 2016. And while COVID-19 has accelerated a global transition towards a digital economy, the crisis has also shed even more light on the digital divide. Undoubtable, India enters its golden phase of entrepreneurship and innovation, the pace and acceleration of digital adoption has also brought into focus the digital divide that still exists in the country.

Today, 500 million people are connected on smartphones, there are 500 million more waiting to join the digital bandwagon and we need to adopt a more inclusive approach to digital transformation. Those who are at the periphery of digital transformation are at the risk of being left behind. The startups and the digital ecosystem will really game-change the digital economy of this country - to go from $250 billion to a $1 trillion economy, contributing to more than half the growth that India is going to witness over the next five years. India emerged as the third largest startup ecosystem in the world in 2021, after the

The pandemic has been a boon to cybercriminals

IT security leaders need to adapt rapidly, collaborate effectively, and recalibrate their security strategies as networks get more dynamic and complex. Cybercriminals are getting more and more adept at exploiting the latest trend or issue of high public interest to spread malware and steal personal data from unsuspecting users. The pandemic triggered tectonic shifts of workplace from physical to virtual has led to enterprises accelerating their digital transformation, thereby, adding high demand on their network capacity. The pandemic has been a boon to cybercriminals, taking advantage of an opportunity to profit from our dependence on technology to go on an internet crime spree. Whether it is the distributed workforce or migration of data and applications to multi-cloud environments, the network is the nerve system connecting the various constituents. There is an urgent need to protect your devices against the most common types of malwares, but we also need security built into technology to prevent these sophisticated cyberattacks.

Mobile devices have become a fixture of every-day life for millions of people. Across the globe, web-enabled devices such as smartphones and tablets have evolved into essential tools for communication, information, and entertainment alike. In 2020, the number of unique mobile internet users stood at 4.28 billion, indicating that over 90% of the global internet population use a mobile device to go online. Mobile devices are now the primary access point for the internet. This is reflected in the increased targeting of mobile devices with cyberattacks, with complaints of phishing and smishing attacks — emails or SMS text messages with malicious links. Cybercriminals utilize sophisticated techniques that exploit human psychology and behaviors to deceive users and penetrate devices. Experts warn that mobile device owners may be more vulnerable

Growing semiconductor shortage remains a global concern

    Global Semiconductor supply crunch

Semiconductors, or chips, have properties that are somewhere between conductors and insulators. Usually made of silicon, they are used to power a wide range of devices - cars, laptops, smartphones, household appliances and gaming consoles. These semiconductors perform a host of functions such as powering displays and transferring data. So, a supply crunch has a consequent impact on sales of cars, fridges, laptops, TVs and other electronic devices. In India, the number of investors in cryptocurrencies has rapidly grown over the past year, and is now distorting how semiconductors are used. Global leaders and executives at multinational corporations are worried about the global shortage of semiconductors which has hit manufacturing and sales in numerous countries and no early solution is in sight. The unforeseen situation is not expected to improve anytime soon, and supply constraints could potentially continue into 2023. Though companies are on a war footing to ramp up production, the problem will likely worsen before reaching a resolution. Intel's chief executive, Pat Gelsinger, recently warned that the worst is yet to come. The surge in sales for electronic devices during the pandemic created a huge demand for semiconductors. But COVID-19 is not the only factor behind the shortage. The chip shortage has now become a talking point not just between companies and governments, but also between leaders of countries. Western countries have expressed a need to shift manufacturing within their countries and become self-reliant.

Another key reason is the tense relationship between the United States and China is also a factor, since many US companies do business with Chinese companies. For instance, Huawei, which supplied to American chip makers, has been blacklisted by the US government. Production of laptops, tablets, smartphones and other electronic devices ha

    The Neo Reality

Enterprises across all industries are facing the urgent need to transform to do a newer way of business. At the same time, new technologies are set to transform the financial services market. Banks need to adapt. To stay competitive in the wide-ranging fintech landscape banks need to become more agile and embrace new technologies. Fintechs and banks are in a race to innovate and shape the future of financial services. As new technologies emerge, traditional banks will have to adapt quickly to provide their customers with what they expect, and this will lead to the emergence of new business models across the financial services sector. This accelerated momentum called ‘the Neo Reality’ is changing customer expectations. Just as with Uber and Airbnb, customers also want to dictate how and when they interact with their financial services providers, using the platform of their choice. Essentially, there are five pillars that are used to guide digital transformations at the financial institutions: “The first pillar is moving to agile. Second is moving to a more modern architecture. Third is doubling down the engineering talent at the bank, and fourth is being more efficient and transforming the technology cost structure. Finally, the fifth pillar is maniacally focusing on security and availability.”

Banking has traditionally been a monopoly with high barriers to market entry. But the relaxation of regulations in countries around the world has paved the way for neobanks to take the initiative and attract customers with the promise of lower fees, convenient mobile banking and improved customer experience that removes in-store banking. That’s why the neobank sector was valued at $30 billion+ in 2020 and is projected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 47.7% over the next eight years. Neobanks are also attracting the unbanked customers with a combined purchasing power of $1.2 trillion. As more

    Brand phishing attack

There are newer trends, where cybercriminals are increasingly impersonating social media platforms in its new Q3 Brand Phishing Report. For the first time this year, social placed in the top three sectors for most phishing attempts, Check Point Research (CPR) warns. Microsoft stays as leader of most imitated brands at 29% of all phishing attacks globally, albeit at a slower rate, down from 45% in Q2 2021. Amazon replaces DHL in second position, accounting for 13% of all phishing attempts, as criminals look to take advantage of online shopping in the run-up to the holiday season. The report highlights the brands which were most frequently imitated by criminals in their attempts to steal individuals’ personal information or payment credentials during July, August and September of this year.

The Top 10 most Imitated Brands in Q3 2021 are

    1. Microsoft (29% of all phishing attacks globally)

    2. Amazon (13%)

    3. DHL (9%)

    4. BestBuy (8%)

    5. Google (6%)

    6. WhatsApp (3%)

    7. Netflix (2.6%)

    8. LinkedIn (2.5%)

    9. PayPal (2.3%)

    10. Facebook (2.2%)

In a brand phishing attack, criminals try to imitate the official website of a well-known brand by using a similar domain name or URL and web-page design to the genuine site. The link to the fake website can be sent to targeted individuals by email or text message, a user can be redirected during web browsing, or it may be triggered from a fraudulent mobile application. The fake website often contains a form intended to steal users’ credentials, payment details or other personal information.

Open source is spurring digital transformation

    #Apple #Digitaltransformation #iPhone13Pro

Digital transformation is what's happening to organizations as they adopt new and innovative ways to do business based on technological advances. From Linux to Kubernetes, open source software has been instrumental in supporting efforts by organisations across the Asia-Pacific region to transform digitally. It’s the process of fundamentally changing something using digital tools and describes adopting technology and—potentially—cultural changes to improve or replace whatever existed before. Digital transformation isn’t a product or solution to be purchased, but it affects everything IT touches in every industry. Our world is digital, and we expect technology to work for us, seamlessly. Most of the time it does. Our smartphones carry all the data needed (and more) to be productive all day long—from word processing tools to calendars, home energy notifications to transportation options, and food delivery services to weather forecasts.

IT infrastructure is the primary digital transformation disruptor. Mainframes led to servers, which led to networks, which led to cloud hosting, which led to today’s hybrid environments. But the need for every company to adopt or adapt to the latest infrastructural breakthrough didn’t happen immediately. The modern economy is running on open source and has had a positive impact on every aspect of our day to day life. From mobile phones to the International Space Station, with such widespread usage of open source, the financial services sector had been relatively slow in adopting and contributing to open source in the past but that is changing fast. There are various reasons why developers and enterprises choose open source. Open source code outlives its original authors as it is constantly updated through active open source communities. Our smartphones are under surveillance by the hackers, scammers and advertisers

    #Smartphone #RakshaMantri #RajnathSingh

Regular Smartphone health check-ups is necessary

It is always wise to do regular health check-ups on your smartphone. If someone has your phone number, they are likely to have other identity elements as well, so don’t be surprised. As we use our phones to perform most of the tasks online, our privacy and data are at risk. Fraudsters can compromise your phone’s security to track your activities or extract confidential data from your device that can be sold or held to draw out ransom from the victim or find other ways to monetize it. Now there are certain tools available to check if your phone is hacked. As per a report by Norton, Apple offers better security to iOS users, but this doesn’t mean that they cannot be hacked. Android phones are more prone to hacking and as per Malwarebytes report, there has been a rise in pre-installed malware and adware on the devices of Android users, with the goal to either steal data or steal attention.

There are certain tips to check on regular basis, to check if your mobile phone is hacked:

    · If you see inappropriate or X-rated advertisements pop-ups on your mobile phone, it could suggest that your phone has been compromised.

    · If there are unknown calls and messages initiated from your phone, it could indicate that your device has been hacked.

    · If your data bill is higher than usual without you increasing your online activities, it is likely that your phone is hacked and the fraudster is using your phone’s data to run apps in the background.

    · The battery life of your phone decreases with time, but if the battery drains at an alarming rate, you must take note.

    · If your phone shows sluggish performance like crashing of apps, freezing of the screen and unexpected restarts, it is a sign of a hacked device.

    · If you notice any unrecognised applications downloaded on your

OTT industry to breach $15 Billion

There is massive investments made by OTT services like Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ Hotstar and others in original as well as acquired content. It will help subscription video-on-demand make up a lion share of the total OTT revenues going forward. The Indian OTT industry which was roughly of the size of $1.7 billion (both Video and Audio) in FY20 has the potential to grow to become a $15 billion industry over the next 9 to 10 years, as per RBSA Advisors. It is cannibalizing into the established bastion of traditional television, radio and cinema auditorium forms of media and entertainment. COVID-19 has accelerated the shift in consumers' behaviour, pulling forward OTT disruption.

India is the next bastion after the US for boosting the subscriber base of International OTT players given the highly regulated environment of International OTT players in China. With access to better networks, digital connectivity and smartphones, OTT platforms in India have increasingly attracted subscribers on a concurrent basis. Apart from top favourites like Disney+ Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, the space is seeing many local and regional OTT players, such as SonyLIV, Voot, Zee5, Eros Now, ALTBalaji, Hoichoi and Adda Times, to name just a few. The growing market and consumer appetite for content of choice available on OTT platforms fuelled this spurt. OTTs offer a never before consumer experience–choice of content, ease of access, choice of device/mediums (hand phone, laptop, tablet or TV screen), liberal censorship policy." An expert says, in the coming days, the OTT players may come up with their customised hardware to enjoy more and stay safe.
