India Wearables Market Records Double-digit Growth in 1Q22, Says IDC India
The India wearables market shipped 13.9 million units in 1Q22, up 20.1% YoY (year-over-year) according to the recent data from the International Data Corporation’s (IDC) India Monthly Wearable Device Tracker. This growth can be attributed to new launches, discounts across channels, and aggressive marketing by brands. The ASP of the overall category declined 17.1% YoY primarily due to a stronger decline in the ASP of watches. Watches continued to be the fastest-growing category shipping 3.7 million units with a growth of 173.0% YoY in 1Q22 (Jan-Mar). Basic watches accounted for 95.1% of the overall watch category shipments. Aggressive competition at entry-level price points helped the basic watches grow 202.1% YoY, whereas the smartwatch shipments declined 4.2% annually. Furthermore, the ASP of the watches declined 41.5% YoY to reach $50.3 in 1Q22 compared to $86.0 in the same quarter last year. On the other hand, Wrist bands continued to decline annually for the 9th consecutive quarter. Overall wristwear (which includes watches and wrist bands) grew 87.5% yearly in 1Q22, with a total shipment of 4.0 million units.The earwear category accounted for 71.3% of the overall wearables category; the true wireless stereo (TWS) devices grew to 48.3% from 34.2% in 1Q21, with a growth of 48.2% YoY. Aggressive discounts, new features, and a strong push from brands and channel partners are encouraging consumers to upgrade and spend more on wearable watches. While dependence on devices like TWS and wearable watches is increasing, supply remains a concern for the industry. Intense competition in the sub $50 category is pushing all brands to offer competitive offerings in terms of pricing, features, and device design. Cloud security continues to be a significant concern for cybersecurity professionals as 96% are moderately concerned and 32% are extremely concerned.A Cloud Security Report survey conducted by Security Insiders found that cloud security concerns among cybersecurity professionals remains high as the adoption of public cloud computing continues to surge in the wake of the pandemic and the resulting massive shift to remote work. Organizations continue to rapidly migrate workloads from data centres to the cloud, and the trend has been accelerating during the recent Covid pandemic. The report indicates that 33% of organizations are running more than half of their workloads in the cloud today, and that number is set to rise to 56% in the next 12–18 months.
At the same time, the Multi-cloud adoption is very much the norm as organizations were found to be operating in an expanded and diverse digital landscape. 71% of organizations are pursuing a hybrid or multi-cloud strategy as cloud is the preferred choice for integration of multiple services, scalability, or business continuity reasons. 76% of organizations are using two or more cloud providers and hybrid still accounts for more than one-third of the deployments. Among the key barriers to faster cloud adoption, survey participants mentioned lack of visibility (53%), lack of control (46%), lack of staff resources or expertise (39%), and high cost (35%) as the most significant negative factors. However, misconfiguration of cloud security remains the biggest security risk according to 67% of cybersecurity professionals in the survey.

India’s journey of creating a #digitalfinancialinfrastructure has helped to advance the country’s goal of enabling financial inclusion and also provided rapid payment digitization for citizens. The pandemic has further accelerated the adoption of #digitalpayments with many first-time users adopting digital payments and significant uplift by merchants. According to a report, India retained the top spot with 25.5 billion real-time #paymentstransactions, followed by China with 15.7 bn transactions.
There are three segments that have shown positive growth. First is OTT that has witnessed an incredible 144% increase in the number of transactions. Second is the gaming segment which also saw a phenomenal 100% increase in expenditure and 154% increase in average ticket size between the two years. Finally, edtech saw a huge boost with a 78% increase in the number of transactions and a 44% increase in expenditure, within this period. At the same time, Globally, card-related fraud remains the highest in terms of reported incidents from consumers. However, fraud incidents associated with real-time payments were on the rise from 2019 to 2020 as fraudsters tend to target new channels. Real-time payments scams that were on the rise include confidence tricks (12.5% rising to 13.7 %), Identity theft (6 % rising to 11.6%) and digital wallet account hacks (4.4% rising to 6.2%).

Bhumi Pednekar recently appeared in the comedy Thank You For Coming and the film invited some extreme reactions from the viewers. While some praised the film for its bold concept, some shamed it for that. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Bubble host Akash Bhatnagar, Bhumi spoke about the latter group of people and slammed them for the shaming. She expressed her disappointment towards people who didn’t criticise the film but its intent. The actress discussed the prevalent gender bias and how people never took offence when she was a part of such stories told from a male perspective. She pointed out how Pankaj Tripathi and Akshay Kumar starrer OMG 2 was supported by the same people who shamed her film, when somewhere they dealt with the same subject. Bhumi revealed if not getting any support from women within the industry disappointed her. She highlighted the hypocrisy of the situation that people accept objectification of women but have a problem with them talking about their sexuality. You can watch the entire conversation here.
