Malicious IoT botnet activity
A report finds that recently there has been a sharp increase in the malicious IoT botnet activity due to growing number of #IoTdevices in use. There are billions of IoT devices in use around the world, and this number is only going to increase in the future.
An expert says, there is lax in security of many IoT devices. Many IoT devices are not properly secured, making them easy targets for attackers. IoT botnet attacks can be very profitable for attackers, as they can be used to disrupt businesses, steal data, and launch other malicious activities.
According to the Nokia Threat Intelligence Report 2023, the number of IoT devices (bots) engaged in botnet-driven DDoS attacks rose from around 200,000 a year ago to approximately 1 million devices, generating more than 40% of all DDoS traffic today. This sharp increase in botnet activity has been driven by a number of factors.
The Report found that IoT botnet DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) traffic, originating from a large number of insecure IoT devices with the aim of disrupting telecom network services for millions of users, increased fivefold over the past year, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and stemming from the growing increase in profit-driven hacking collectives operated by #cybercriminals.

The rise in remote working and distributed users accessing cloud-hosted applications means that the enterprise perimeter is no longer limited to users within the company site. 52% of the respondents said in a survey that they have deployed Cloud Infrastructure as a Service and 42% said they currently use hybrid cloud. While cloud adoption continues to grow, enterprises have generally struggled to implement and maintain a secure, high-performing WAN that allows for efficient access to cloud-based applications across their user base. If you consider the distributed nature of enterprise applications, and now the increasingly distributed nature of employees working from home, the traditional branch networking method of backhauling traffic (from users and devices) to a centralized location is highly inefficient.
Secondly, there is an emerging nomenclature, SASE (Secure Access Service Edge) aims to address the need for a centralized, software-defined security architecture when the apps and users are highly distributed. SASE combines the flexibility of SD-WAN with a full suite of virtual security services, all delivered from the cloud. Furthermore, the rise in remote working and distributed users accessing cloud-hosted applications means that the enterprise perimeter is no longer limited to users within the company site. Think about it: if your applications are in the cloud, and the users are at home or at a branch location (spread across the globe), why is your organization’s security set up at the headquarters location? The traditional model is time-consuming with subpar performance and a poor user experience. As per the data from LinkedIn ,based on the survey responses of 1,891 professionals from May 8 to June 4, findings reveal how the aftermath of the pandemic’s second wave has left Indian professionals — particularly Gen Z and working women — increasingly vulnerable to the economic uncertainty in today’s evolving job market. The report shows that ,India’s overall workforce confidence has declined after peaking in early March, with a composite score of +54 today (down 4 points from +58 in March). This dip in confidence is reflected strongly across professionals from creative industries such as Entertainment, Design, and Media & Comms, who expressed being uncertain about the future of their employers. But as several parts of the economy gradually reopen, professionals from Software & IT and Hardware & Networking are growing increasingly confident about the future of their organizations.
As India slowly begins to come out of the second wave of Covid-19 cases, we see the year-over-year hiring rate recover from a low of 10% in April to 35% at the end of May. The second wave worsens ‘she cession’; twice as many working women worried about availability of jobs, time for job-seeking compared to working men. 30% Gen Z professionals troubled due to lack of jobs, compared to 18% Baby Boomers. The pandemic’s recent peak in India has amplified the importance of work experience and professional connections, as young Indians were found twice (2.5x) as worried as their older cohorts, about the impact of COVID-19 on their careers. The survey reveals that, ‘Flexibility’ and ‘work life balance’ become as important as ‘salary’ and ‘benefits’ today. Meanwhile, this growing demand for flexibility comes at a time when remote opportunities continue to grow.
