The recent proliferation of generative AI tools like ChatGPT has demonstrated that the technology is set to transform business and society. AI is rapidly changing the financial system, and it has the potential to create new systemic risks.

    Gary Gensler, the chairman of the SEC, has spoken on the potential consequences of artificial intelligence for years. The recent proliferation of generative AI tools like ChatGPT has demonstrated that the technology is set to transform business and society.

    Employers started using computers and AI to spy on their workers without their consent. This technology will be the centre of future crises, future financial crises. It has to do with this powerful set of economics around scale and networks.

    PM Shri Narendra Modi attends the Semicon India Conference 2023 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat
    =======================================
    I am amazed to see the progress in the field of semiconductors.

    The way the new companies, new products and new people are associating with the semiconductor field is wonderful.
    =======================================
    During the times of the first edition of the 'Semicon India', the debate and discussions revolved around 'Why to invest' (in Semiconductor sector of India).

    But today, there are new questions; it is being asked that 'Why not Invest'?
    =======================================
    In India, there used to be 25 crore internet connections in 2014. Today, this number stands at over 85 crore.

    This number isn't just speaking about India's success, but also is serving as an indicator of the rising business for your (semiconductor) industry.
    ======================================
    India is one of the countries in the world having the least corporate taxes.

    We have made the taxation process faceless and seamless!

    We have ensured Ease of Doing Business through abolishing many obsolete laws and compliances.

    Government has given special incentives to the Semiconductor industry.

    These decisions, these policies are the reflection of India laying the red carpet for the Semiconductor industry.
    ======================================
    हमने taxation process को Faceless और seamless बनाया है। हमने Ease of Doing Business के रास्ते में आने वाले पुराने कानून और Compliances को खत्म किया है। सेमीकंडक्टर इंडस्ट्री के लिए सरकार ने स्पेशल इंसेंटिव भी दिए हैं।

    ये निर्णय और नीतियां इसका प्रतिबिंब है कि भारत सेमीकंडक्टर इंडस्ट्री के लिए रेड कार्पेट बिछा रहा है।

  • Network outages

    Network outages

    The Indian government has been actively promoting the use of #digitaltechnologies through various initiatives such as Digital India, Make in India, and #StartupIndia. Today we have nearly 1.2 billion consumers latch onto telecom networks.

    The increase in internet and smartphone penetration in India has played a major role in the growth of the digital ecosystem. The number of internet users in India is expected to reach 800 million by 2023 but still the continuous network outage remains the 'hue and cry' affairs in the country. Network outage no longer leads merely to dropped phone calls but – potentially – to the failure of critical enterprise services.

    The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has directed all telecom service providers to promptly inform them of any network outages and provide a detailed account of the root causes and subsequent corrective measures taken.

    Generative AI - a subset of AI

    Today’s #generativeAI tools like #ChatGPT have created excitement throughout the industry over new possibilities, but the compute required for its models have put a spotlight on performance, cost, and energy efficiency as top concerns for enterprises today.

    As generative AI models get bigger, power efficiency becomes a critical factor in driving productivity with a wide range of complex AI workload functions from data pre-processing to training and inference. Developers need a build-once-and-deploy-everywhere approach with flexible, open, energy efficient and more sustainable solutions that allow all forms of AI, including generative AI, to reach their full potential.

    It is unlikely that generative AI will completely obsolete present computing devices. While generative AI has made significant advances in recent years, it still relies on computing devices to operate.

    India to attract $100 billion in FDI this fiscal

    #FDI has come from 101 countries and is invested across 31 UTs and states and 57 sectors in the country. MSMEs growth forms the essential bedrock of the Indian economy. It has attracted foreign investments, as the government has put in place a liberal and transparent policy wherein most sectors are open to FDI under the automatic route.

    The iconic projects like Make in India, the flagship programme of the Government of India that aspires to facilitate investment, foster innovation, enhance skill development and build best-in-class manufacturing infrastructure, completes eight years of path-breaking reforms on September 25, 2022.

    Secondly, the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme is one of the schemes to attract foreign investment to the country and boost domestic manufacturing. It was launched in 2020-21 as a big boost to the Make in India initiative.

    The PLI scheme incentivises domestic production in strategic growth sectors where India has a comparative advantage. This includes strengthening domestic manufacturing, forming resilient supply chains, making Indian industries more competitive and boosting the export potential.

    More importantly, the government has taken steps to address the import of low-quality and hazardous toys and to enhance domestic manufacture of toys. Import of toys dropped by 70 per cent to $110 million (Rs 877.8 crore) in 2021-22.

    On the other hand, exports rose by 61 per cent to $326 million. Recognising the importance of semiconductors in the global economy, the government has launched a $10-billion incentive scheme to build a semiconductor, display and design ecosystem in India.

    Guided by the principle of ‘Reform, Perform and Transform’ the Government of India has brought in several reforms which have furthered ‘Ease of Doing Business’. It includes liberalisation of guidelines and regulations in order to reduce unnecessary compliance burden, bringing down costs and enhancing the ease

  • India to top the ranking in exports

    India to top the ranking in exports

    India's semiconductor component industry is expected to exceed $300 billion by 2026, as "Make in India" and production-linked incentive initiatives enhance local sourcing of semi-components in the coming years. Mobile and wearables, IT, and industrial categories now account for over 80% of the country's semiconductor revenues in 2021.

    Amongst the key products that are expected to lead India’s growth in electronics manufacturing include Mobile Phones, IT Hardware (laptops, tablets), Consumer electronics (TV and audio), Industrial electronics, Auto electronics, electronic components, LED Lighting, Strategic electronics, PCBA, Wearables and hearables, and Telecom equipment (see chart).

    Mobile manufacturing that is expected to cross US$100 billion annual production - up from the current US$30 billion - is expected to constitute nearly 40% of this ambitious growth.

    The demand for Mobile and wearable devices currently account for 51% of the semiconductor revenue in India, followed by IT (20%), industrial (9%), consumer electronics (7%) and telecom and automotive (5% each).

    India is poised to be the second largest market in the world from the perspective of scale and growing demand across industries and applications. This demand is being pushed by the increasing pace of digital transformation among consumers, enterprises and the public sector through the adoption of new technologies, from advanced connectivity to content consumption to the cloud.

    This consumption will not only come from the advanced semiconductor-heavy 5G and FTTH network infrastructure equipment, which will contribute to more than 14 percent of the total semiconductor consumption in 2026 but also from the highly capable AI-driven 5G endpoints, from smartphones, tablets, PCs, connected cars, industrial robotics to private networks

    The domestic market is expected to increase from $65 billion to $180 billion over the next 5 years. This

    Atmanirbhar Bharat is reinventing the defence sector

    Due to the policies of the government in the defence sector, especially in defence production, the country is becoming increasingly self-reliant. Of all approvals accorded for modernisation of armed forces in 2020-21, 87% were from the 'Make in India' category. India has a domestic defence industry of which 80% is government owned. The public sector includes DRDO and its 50 labs, 4 defence shipyards, 12 defence PSUs. India has a new defence procurement, acquisition and manufacturing policy to reduce imports and enhance domestic manufacturing. India is poised to expand its footprint in foreign defence markets. The world has taken note of the BrahMos deal. And several other Asian and African countries could be potential buyers of the missile. There are several other indigenous platforms that hold good export potential. The focus on boosting exports comes along with a renewed thrust on indigenisation of weapons and systems. India's defence exports have recorded nearly a six-fold increase between 2017 and 2021, growing from ₹1,520 crore to ₹8,435 crore. Defence items being exported by India include missiles, the advanced light helicopters, offshore patrol vessels, personal protective gear, surveillance systems and a variety of radars. In the Indian context, the nation continues to face both conventional and non-conventional threats from its two inimical neighbours, the threats manifesting the entire spectrum of conflict on land, in the maritime domain, in the air and in space and outer space. This speaks to the need to have a strong defence architecture to negate all such threats.

    However, despite having a large defence public sector, there have been serious weaknesses in the indigenous production of land systems, as well as platforms for the Navy and the IAF which has impacted India’s defence capability. Since the last seven years, however, we are seeing a distinct change in government policies, which are now aiming to establish a strong and vib

    India and U.K. Commit for Jointly Enhance Cyber Security Partnership

    India and the United Kingdom have committed to a joint program of cooperation to increase cybersecurity. In May 2021, both the leaders had agreed to build on the Enhanced Cyber Security Partnership, which was announced by the two countries with a focus on cyber governance, deterrence, resilience and capacity building. Prime Minister Modi and UK counterpart PM Boris Jhonson reiterated a shared commitment to a partnership for vision 2030 for open, accessible and peaceful cyberspace that will bring a more secure Indo-Pacific on 22 April 2022. India and the U.K. are concerned by the increased willingness of states and their proxies to undertake malicious cyber activities contrary to identified norms of responsible state behaviour in cyberspace. India and the U.K. are working in close cooperation under the International Counter Ransomware Initiative. They will also work together to counter cybercrime by preventing, deterring, mitigating, investigating and prosecuting these crimes, ensuring speedy justice for the victims of cybercrime and taking into account the need for appropriate safeguards including data protection. Both countries have pledged to work in partnership to increase their mutual cyber resilience, taking a holistic and whole-of-society approach. They will complete joint work to identify shared vulnerabilities, and promote effective public-private partnerships, with a view to ensuring decisions on systems design and deployment take into account public safety protections and increasing the awareness and ability of the public and infrastructure owners, to increase resilience against malicious cyber activity.

    With the increasing complexities of Cyberspace, governments cannot meet the challenges of the digital age alone. Hence, it has been recognised by the state that the private sector can play an important role as developers and implementers of new technologies, and in relation to data management. Chinese e-commerce giant has started operations in India through Shopee

    In the year 2020, The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology invoked issued directions for blocking the mobile applications under section 69A of IT Act 2000. There are various mobile applications which are being funded and are operating under the influence of Chinese entities and continue to operate in India through the smokescreen afforded by a global maze of equity holdings and complex corporate structures. Such is the set-up of SPPIN which has been created to penetrate into the India e-commerce markets and is utilising the Chinese investments through multiple and complex corporate structuring. The Fintech segment in India has seen an exponential rise in funding over the last few years. India has seen tremendous growth on the Digital Payments front, clocking a monthly volume of over 5.7 Billion transactions worth ~$2 Trillion (Total Digital Payments) in September ’21. India has over 18 Fintechs which have gained ‘Unicorn Status’ in the year 2021. Adoption of the internet in rural areas is also expected to complement the rise of technology startups. FinTech companies operating in mobile payments, insurance, blockchain, stock trading and digital lending will grow further and capitalise on internet penetration. The Fintech revolution in India is the culmination of years of effort in laying the groundwork towards developing key enablers through important initiatives including Jan Dhan Yojana, Financial Literacy, E-RUPI and the India Stack, a set of APIs that allows governments, businesses, startups and developers to utilise a unique digital Infrastructure to solve India’s hard problems towards presence-less, paperless, and cashless service delivery.

    The India Stack has been the driving force behind the accelerated evolution of Fintechs. It is one of the most important digital initiatives undertaken globally, aimed at putting up a public digital infrastructure based on open APIs to promote public and private digital initiatives and has played a catalytic role in India’s digital foundation and evolution. The Indian FinTech market currently stands as the third largest FinTech ecosystem in the world behind the US and China. However, India still remains an untapped market due to lower penetration of financial services. The overall size of the Indian financial services sector in 2021 is estimated at $500 billion, of which, the FinTech market comprises $31 billion, according to a report

    Success Of Fintech Start-ups

    India is recognised as the world's fastest-growing economies and has emerged as one of the fastest-growing FinTech hotspots in recent years. Paperless lending, mobile banking, secure payment gateways, mobile wallets, and other concepts are already being adopted at a super speed in the country. FinTechs are emerging with the innovations in digital technology that aims to improve and automate the delivery and usage of financial services. The word FinTech is a combination of "financial technology.” Fintech APIs are driving an explosion of new business models. Their increasing adoption and use throughout the financial sectors have resulted in an explosion of new apps, services and business models. APIs allow different systems to talk to each other. In the context of financial technology—or fintech—they enable data access among the parties involved in financial transactions, including banks, third-party providers, websites and consumers. Banks and payment companies need to connect with third parties in order to expand their services and stay competitive. Merchants need to make it easy for customers to pay using their preferred methods and consumers want to be able to transfer funds, make purchases and perform personal banking tasks on the go.

    The digitization of banks, mobile payments, digital currencies, online mutual fund investments and others have given rise to fintech innovation. India's payments infrastructure has seen substantial improvements, particularly with the introduction of new payment mechanisms and interfaces such as Immediate Payments Service, Unified Payments Interface, Bharat Interface for Money, and others. The government's "Make in India" and "Digital India" projects also played a significant role in accelerating the adoption of Fintech. It is commendable that the Reserve Bank of India has also pushed the g

    IT spending in India is expected to grow

    IT spending in India is forecasted to total $101.8 billion in 2022, an increase of 7% from 2021, according to the latest forecast by Gartner. The digital transformation trajectory that began as a pandemic response is here to stay for the next few years. India has experienced one of the fastest recoveries despite being one of the worst hit regions in the second wave of the pandemic in early 2021. In 2022, CIOs in India will build on renewed interest in technology from the business to gain funding for new IT projects. Indian CIOs are likely to increase their spending towards projects that drive innovation and modernizing legacy systems. Hiring a workforce that can deliver on these needs will also be a key priority. Next year, Indian CIOs are prioritizing a move away from rigid and monolithic ways of doing business to a more composable business and IT architecture where they will be able to better respond to disruptions.

    In 2022, all segments of IT spending in India are expected to grow, with software emerging as the highest growing segment. Spending on software is forecast to total $10.5 billion in 2022, up 14.4% from 2021. While experiencing a slower growth rate than 2021, spending on software in 2022 is forecast to be nearly double of what it was pre-pandemic. As hybrid work adoption increases in the country, there will be an uptick in spending on devices in 2022, reaching $44 billion, an increase of 7.5% from 2021. “The growth in devices is a combination of two components – hybrid work and pent-up demand from 2020 for device upgrades. Spending on devices will make up 43% of total IT spending next year.” Spending on communication services is expected to rise 2.3% to $24.5 billion in 2022 from $24 billion in 2021, while that on data centre systems is forecast to grow 3.4% to $2.8 billion in 2022 from $2.7 billion in 2021, according to Gartner reports.

    India –Electronics Hub

    It is a very important move in the journey of ‘Make in India’ for electronics. The journey started in 2020 with an aim of attracting large investments in the country that includes manufacturing of electronic components, semiconductors and mobile segments. India’s cabinet has approved a $6.37 billion (Rs 637 crore) plan to boost electronics manufacturing. The policy has set an ambitious target of increasing electronics manufacturing in the country to $400 billion by 2025. The new measures that come at a time when the world is battling the coronavirus epidemic and halting global supply chains is aimed at attracting large investments in the country that includes manufacturing of electronic components, semiconductors and mobile segments. The Scheme shall extend an incentive of 4% to 6% on incremental sales of goods manufactured in India and covered under target segments, to eligible companies, for a period of five subsequent years. The move is likely to give an aggressive push to ensure big companies such as Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Oppo and Vivo, besides contract manufacturers like Foxconn and Wistron bring their global supply chains to India and make the country an electronics hub.

    With a population nearing 1.4 billion, India has emerged as one of the largest markets for electronics products in the world. While the highest growth is in demand for smartphones, lighting products, security products as well as industrial technologies, there is also significant expansion in markets for medical electronics, defense, and emerging technologies such as 5G, IoT, Industry 4.0, and smart cities. As per a report, the country’s electronics market is forecast to reach $400 billion by 2025. Secondly, there is a huge gap in supply of electronic components such as PCBs, capacitors, resistors, chip components and semiconductor devices. “The recent disruptions in the global supply chain and challenges p

    The Neo Reality

    Enterprises across all industries are facing the urgent need to transform to do a newer way of business. At the same time, new technologies are set to transform the financial services market. Banks need to adapt. To stay competitive in the wide-ranging fintech landscape banks need to become more agile and embrace new technologies. Fintechs and banks are in a race to innovate and shape the future of financial services. As new technologies emerge, traditional banks will have to adapt quickly to provide their customers with what they expect, and this will lead to the emergence of new business models across the financial services sector. This accelerated momentum called ‘the Neo Reality’ is changing customer expectations. Just as with Uber and Airbnb, customers also want to dictate how and when they interact with their financial services providers, using the platform of their choice. Essentially, there are five pillars that are used to guide digital transformations at the financial institutions: “The first pillar is moving to agile. Second is moving to a more modern architecture. Third is doubling down the engineering talent at the bank, and fourth is being more efficient and transforming the technology cost structure. Finally, the fifth pillar is maniacally focusing on security and availability.”

    Banking has traditionally been a monopoly with high barriers to market entry. But the relaxation of regulations in countries around the world has paved the way for neobanks to take the initiative and attract customers with the promise of lower fees, convenient mobile banking and improved customer experience that removes in-store banking. That’s why the neobank sector was valued at $30 billion+ in 2020 and is projected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 47.7% over the next eight years. Neobanks are also attracting the unbanked customers with a combined purchasing power of $1.2 trillion. As more

    Government puts a stop mark on the retro tax, to boost make in India

    #RetroTax #makeinindia #AatmanirbharBharat

    Govt. stops retro tax

    The Government has ordered to nullify the retrospective tax clauses that were introduced in 2012 to bring past indirect transfer of Indian assets under the ambit of taxation. Experts say, it’s the right call India government has taken in drawing the curtains on the retrospective tax. The country needs to strengthen the confidence of investors, not dangle the sword of uncertainty over them. The amendment for retrospective taxation yielded no revenues, only brought about disrepute to the government. The government proposes to refund the principal amount in full to the litigants, but the companies will need to withdraw the cases and furnish undertakings that they won't claim cost damages or interest. It recognises the importance of certainty in tax laws which is a key factor in ensuring confidence in India as an attractive investment destination and expressed strong ambition for an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

    The retrospective applicability of this provision met with sharp criticism. On 5th August, the ghost of this retrospective tax has been finally laid to rest. The government has introduced The Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 to undo this insidious provision from the Finance Bill, 2012. This will potentially help resolve 17 cases in which income tax demand had been raised. In two high profile cases—Cairn and Vodafone—the corporate entities had already won various legal and arbitration awards. The order says, the government will not raise tax demands in any such case if the transaction occurred before 28 May 2012. Any demand already raised will be withdrawn and any taxes collected will be paid back for the principal amount. In the cases where litigation is pending, this will be done after the impacted corporate party gives an undertaking not to contest the case further. This is a welcome move and also a practical implementation plan.
