इस बात से तो सब वाकिफ ही हैं कि आज से 6 साल पहले केदारनाथ धाम में बेहद ही खतरनाक प्रलय आया था, जिससे कि बहुत सी मासूम लोगों की जाने गई थी और साथ ही बहुत से लोगों का सब कुछ तबाह हो गया था। कहते हैं कि उस तबाही के निशान आज भी वहां मौजूद हैं। 16 जून 2013 को चोराबरी झील, जिसे गांधी सरोवर भी कहा जाता है, वहां की केदार घाटी में भयंकर तबाही मची थी। चोराबरी झील के टूटने से आई उस जल प्रलय का वेग इतना भयानक था कि केदार घाटी और इसके आस-पास मौजूद कई मंजिला होटल और गेस्ट हाउस तिनके की तरह बिखरकर पानी में बह गए थे। केदार घाटी में विनाश मचाने के बाद यह झील लगभग विलुप्त हो गई थी और इसका इलाका एक समतल भूमि के रूप में दिखाई देने लगा था।
