Indian telecom industry facing headwinds
The telecom industry had been facing headwinds since the launch of services by Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) which manifested into decline in revenue and profit generation. Further, the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) penalty added to the woes of the industry and has kept the debt levels elevated. Owing to these reasons, the financial position of Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) has been deteriorating due to mounting losses and increasing debt levels. As per an ICRA note, this stress on VIL is likely to impact financial as well as other stakeholders and can impact the industry structure. It has been observed that as VIL owes Rs 23,400 crore to lenders and Rs 1,68,190 crore to government towards spectrum and AGR deferred dues as on June 30, 2021. Over the last 12 quarters starting Q2FY2019, VIL has been reporting sizable losses.
Further, with the addition of AGR liabilities, the debt has burgeoned to more than Rs 2 lakh crore as on June 30, 2021 (including lease liabilities). This, along with churn in the subscriber base, mostly stagnant 4G user base, and pressure on ARPU levels have kept the revenue and profit generation muted. As per ICRA, the most effective relief can come in the form of extension of moratorium on spectrum dues beyond FY2022, a move that could result in deferment of dues payable in FY2023 to the tune of Rs 32,000 crore for the industry, of which Rs 16,000 crore are VIL's. Moreover, reduction in the levies paid by telcos, namely license fee and spectrum usage charges can also lift the EBITDA. An estimation states, one per cent reduction in levies leads to annual saving of Rs 1,600 crore for the industry. VIL occupies 35% tenancy share and 36% revenue share. The pandemic has heightened the importance of the supply chain and the need to protect it from cybercrime. Supply chain attacks have long been a concern in cyber security circles as it can be difficult to enforce or prescribe cyber security measures for suppliers and partners. Secondly, there is high growth of ransomware in the education sector, which looks at the extent and impact of ransomware attacks on educational institutions worldwide during 2020 and continuing in 2021. Education, together with retail, faced the highest level of ransomware attacks during 2020, with 44% of organizations hit (compared to 37% across all industry sectors). For educational institutions, the financial impact of a ransomware attack in 2020 was crippling. The total bill for rectifying a ransomware attack in the education sector, considering downtime, people time, device cost, network cost, lost opportunity, ransom paid, and more, was, on average, $2.73 million – the highest across all sectors surveyed, and 48% above the global average.
The Sophos report states, over half (58%) of the education organizations hit by ransomware said the attackers had succeeded in encrypting their data and over a third (35%) of those with encrypted data gave in to the attackers’ demands and paid the ransom. Only the energy, oil/gas and utilities (43%), and local government (42%) sectors were more likely to pay and the average ransom payment was $1,12,435 (lower than the global average of $1,70,404) . However, those who paid recovered on average only around two-thirds (68%) of their data, leaving almost a third inaccessible; and just 11% got all their encrypted data back. Of those institutions that were not hit with ransomware last year (55% of respondents), the majority (61%) expect to be targeted in the future. A report titled ‘Online Payment Fraud: Emerging Threats, Segment Analysis & Market Forecasts 2021-2025‘, conducted by Juniper Research, suggests that it’s time merchants step up their game. They must implement better fraud prevention strategies across all eCommerce channels if they do not wish to be subjected to significant chunk of losses. North America is estimated to be the worst hit as nearly 50% of the $20 billion estimated loss will occur in the region alone in 2021. Far East & China will be the second most worst hit with eCommerce fraud, followed by West Europe. Furthermore, the research identified that the use of artificial intelligence can help enable behavioural biometrics in this area, leading to increased security across all potential fraud channels.
The report highlighted that China would be the largest hub of the eCommerce fraud market in the entire world by accounting for a whopping 40% of eCom-related fraud losses in 2025, amounting to $12 billion. The research suggests that the massive e-commerce market combined with the relative lack of fraud detection measures will be the key drivers behind the situation. Juniper Research recommends that China-based eCommerce merchants start investing in fraud detection and prevention technologies from now. It will help them escape future fraud-related losses, which can further impact their already slim operating margin. All in all, it is well understood that consumers should be wary of upcoming fraud-related risks and, to prepare for the same, start becoming more vigilant when it comes to transacting online, especially on lesser-known e-commerce sites.
