#SMSvulnerability could enable #hackers to track users' locations. Researchers have issued a warning against a new vulnerability in text messaging that may allow hackers to trace users' locations. As of now, the vulnerability has been observed mainly in Android operating systems.
The vulnerability lies in the automated delivery notification feature of SMS. The research group, explains that this flaw allows hackers to track a user's location using a machine-learning program and data from the SMS system. By obtaining the victim's phone number and normal network access, hackers can monitor the victim's location worldwide.

India panel recommends digital competition act
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has had strained relations with many large technology companies, and New Delhi has been tightening the regulation of firms such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. These tech giants are facing scrutiny from the country's competition watchdog, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), over alleged abuse of the application market.
The Committee recommend that the government should consider and introduce a digital competition act to ensure a fair, transparent and contestable digital ecosystem, which will be a boon not only for our country and its nascent start-up economy but also for the entire world," the panel said in a report submitted in India's lower house of parliament.
The panel recommended the identification of top tech players as systemically important digital intermediaries to counter monopoly and warned they "must not favour its own offers over the offers of its competitors" when acting as mediators to supply and sales markets.
In India, Amazon and rival Flipkart are facing accusations of anti-competitive practices, such as promoting preferred sellers on websites and giving priority to listings by some sellers.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance headed by Jayant Sinha has in its latest Big Tech report come up with a slew of recommendations on digital markets, including the introduction of a Digital Competition Act to ensure a fair, transparent and contestable digital ecosystem; identification of Systemically Important Digital Intermediaries (SIDI) and adoption of definitions to ‘ex-ante’ regulate their behaviour and framing of regulatory provisions to ensure that ‘news publishers’ are able to establish contracts with SIDIs in a fair and transparent process.

The National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre in India, an organisation of the Government of India designated as the National Nodal Agency in respect of Critical Information Infrastructure Protection, has identified the following as ‘Critical Sectors’ – Power & Energy, Banking, Financial Services & Industrance, Telecom, Transport, Government and Strategic & Public Enterprises.
All of these, which provide services that are essential to the day-to-day functioning of society, are hives of the most sensitive and confidential data that threat actors can easily be monetised on the Dark Web, driving further cybercrime and disruption.
Unfortunately, the potential for widespread disruption has not gone unnoticed by cybercriminals. In India, close to seven critical infrastructure attacks have wreaked havoc for those within that industry – from the Oil India Limited ransomware attack in April, and in May on grounded SpiceJet flights, leaving passengers stranded for 4 hours, to Goa’s flood monitoring system in June and banking data breaches reported in August to the more recent cyberattacks on the AIIMS healthcare sector and resulting onslaught on Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, have left authorities understanding the need to prepare for an escalation in cyberattacks in future.
This focus on critical infrastructure is intentional. Cybercriminals are fully aware of the impact that any disruption has on vital services, not just financially but also on public confidence. For example, in utilities, you cannot expect people to be without electricity or water, which means companies are more likely to pay in the event of ransomware.
Hackers are also very observant and will strike during periods of unrest, for example using the ongoing energy crisis as an entry point for phishing or man-in-the-middle attacks.

Companies have opposed the practice of moonlighting, saying that employees doing multiple jobs can impact their productivity. Moonlighting has become a topic of debate in the IT industry as working from home (WFH) became the normal norm during the Covid-19 pandemic, which is believed to have led to a rise in dual employment. However, Indian IT firms are divided when it comes to moonlighting. For some, it is unethical while others call it the need of the hour.
About 50% of leaders say their company already requires or is planning to require employees to return to in-person work full-time in the next year. In the same report, 52% of workers said that they are thinking of switching to a full-time remote or hybrid job in 2022.
The issue of moonlighting or dual employment has emerged as a big talking point in the IT industry ever since Wipro Chairman Rishad Premji red-flagged the issue on Twitter, equating it to "cheating". Recently, Infosys allowed its staff to take up external gig work provided such an engagement does not compete with the company, its clients or pose conflict of interest.
At the same time, Happiest Minds' Executive Vice Chairman Joseph Anantharaju said, we have been quite clear with our people that it is something we will not accept... because when you sign a contract or employment offer, you are agreeing to work only for that company." While the majority of tech firms are against the idea of secondary work, companies like Tech Mahindra support the idea if its workers are open about it.
Moonlighting raises risks and questions around security, as well as commitment of workers in devoting their time and attention to end customers and delivery outcomes. ONDC’s success depends upon e-com companies
By “unbundling” the transaction into separate micro-services, different entities are able to pick up and carry out different services. If successful, it will help weaken the monopolistic hold of #Amazon and #Flipkart – which dominate 63% of ecommerce in India, increase competition and accelerate growth. Nandan Nilekani, the architect of the India Stack and part of #ONDC’s advisory council, calls it the “most exciting business transformation happening in the world”.
To begin with, it would require the participation of all players. Buyers and buyer applications, sellers and seller applications; logistics players; and payment partners. ONDC was initially projected as a platform to take on Amazon’s and Flipkart’s of the world to reduce their dominance and democratise e-commerce in India.
At the moment, Paytm is the only buyer application from where buyers can log into the ONDC network to make a purchase, that is part of the network. Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho are in talks with ONDC, but they are still not part of the network.
Snapdeal has been in the news for becoming the “first e-commerce marketplace to debut on ONDC” but they have joined from the seller side, not the buyer side. This means that sellers on Snapdeal can also sell on ONDC to customers browsing from other platforms like Paytm. However, buyers on Snapdeal cannot enter the ONDC network through the company’s platform.
The aim of ONDC is to increase the gross merchandise value (GMV) of digital transactions from Rs 4.5 trillion annually to over Rs 7.5 trillion. It is also to expand coverage of retailers using digital commerce from 15,000 to more than 2 million in the next five years. It wants to expand the number of Indians using e-commerce from 90 million users to over 250 million.
But a question remains unanswered - on ONDC’s financial viability: Will ONDC also take the path that UPI took of 0% merchant discount rate?

As per US Cyber Advisory, there is a very large size of espionage attack by the Chinese government-backed hackers who have broken into a number of major telecom businesses throughout the world by exploiting known software flaws in routers and other popular networking gear.
The Chinese hackers allegedly exploited networking devices from key vendors such as Cisco, Citrix, Zyxel, QNAP, DrayTek, MikroTik, D-Link, and Netgear in the recently disclosed cyber assault.
The US officials said that the hackers utilised the stolen devices to acquire full access to the network traffic of several private companies and government agencies once they had a foothold within their targets. However, the advisory did not list the identities of persons who were impacted by the campaign, nor did it describe the campaign’s impact. But the US authorities did point out the specific networking devices, such as routers and switches, that Chinese hackers are suspected of routinely targeting, exploiting severe and well-known flaws that basically gave the attackers free reign over their targets.
