A Billion & One Voices: Empowering Women through Silayi (Stitching) Centre
This is not a story one but many women living in villages. "If you have less money, then you just have to learn to live like that" is what was ingrained in them. Their aspirations and dreams had no meaning in the world they lived in. In fact they never thought one day they would be able to earn money and support their families.
The Congress government's initiative to open a Sewing Centre in their village turned their life around. All the women in the village gathered together and discussed how this could help them. By learning how to stitch they could end up saving money as they themselves would be able to make clothes for the family. This came as great opportunity to learn something new. They now work at the sewing centre and with money they make they are able to support their families. In their words "The government has given us a chance to earn money while sitting at home".
This is one of the many Women's Empowerment Initiative sponsored by the Centre of Equity and Inclusion, supported by the Congress led government of Haryana.

BJP's hypocrisy on women
There is one problem with blind copying. Your track record may fail you. The BJP is an excellent example of this. When we spoke of women's empowerment BJP also started doing the same. But they forgot history, again.
It was the Congress which introduced the concept of rural self governance in India. Today, 1.2 million women are part of councils of rural self government. Under UPA, women's literacy increased to over 65%, maternal mortality came down by almost 10%. We brought the Anti-Rape Act, the Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act and the Domestic Violence Act.
While we were busy paving the way for progress of India's women, BJP was busy snooping on innocent women in Gujarat. Their ministers were caught shamelessly watching pornographic movies on their mobile phones during an Assembly session in Karnataka. A former BJP Minister from Karnataka was arrested for raping a woman.
Our next target is the Women's Reservation Bill. If it becomes a reality, BJP will be forced to give a fair representation to women in the States rules by it. At present, only two of nineteen ministers in Gujarat are women.

Self Help Groups: Empowering Women
Congress Vice President, Rahul Gandhi believes that India can't become a superpower unless the women are empowered.
Millions of women thank Rahul Gandhi and Congress for launching Self Help Groups (SHG) across India. An SHG is a village-based financial intermediary usually composed of 10--20 local women.Members make small regular savings contributions over a few months until there is enough capital in the group to begin lending. Funds may then be lent back to the members or to others in the village for any purpose.
It is because of SHG's that women in rural India are able to get out of debt from money lenders and are able to sucessfully generate self employment for themselves.
30 million women have been empowered and have found a new identity for themselves in the society with the scheme. Indian National Congress further plans to reach out to more than 70 million women in the next 5 years. And will bring more such schemes that will benefit each and every section of the society.

The local businessman would lend money to the poor on high interest rates. The poor having no other option would take it and found themselves forever in debt.
Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojna helped them break these bonds of oppression. Women who got associated with the self help groups not only borrowed money, but they borrowed money to start a new life and earn a living. They are now happy and independent.
Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojna enabled its 92,883 Women Self Help Groups to avail loans worth INR 2.61 Billion from various banks.

Empowering and Connecting Women to the World: Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojana
Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojana (RGMVP) is a rights-based organisation working for poverty reduction, women's empowerment and rural development in Uttar Pradesh.
With a commitment to the poor's strong desire and innate ability to overcome poverty, RGMVP organises poor rural women into community organisations in the form of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), each with ten to twenty women.
RGMVP has lifted millions of women out of poverty and Anita, a resident of Amethi, Uttar Pradesh is one such beneficiary of RGMVP. Since the time Anita joined the Self Help Group it has given her immense confidence, not only was she able to repay the debt taken by her mother in law, but she has also provided financial assistance to her husband who bought a piece of land in Noida. Anita made sure that the land bought in Noida is registered in her name only.
In Uttar Pradesh RGMVP has a membership of 12 lakh women reaching 1 million household and a saving corpus of 430 million rupees. The SHG's work with women to secure their basic rights and entitlements, linking them to existing state and non-state structures and resources, such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment
