    Malicious IoT botnet activity

A report finds that recently there has been a sharp increase in the malicious IoT botnet activity due to growing number of #IoTdevices in use. There are billions of IoT devices in use around the world, and this number is only going to increase in the future.

An expert says, there is lax in security of many IoT devices. Many IoT devices are not properly secured, making them easy targets for attackers. IoT botnet attacks can be very profitable for attackers, as they can be used to disrupt businesses, steal data, and launch other malicious activities.

According to the Nokia Threat Intelligence Report 2023, the number of IoT devices (bots) engaged in botnet-driven DDoS attacks rose from around 200,000 a year ago to approximately 1 million devices, generating more than 40% of all DDoS traffic today. This sharp increase in botnet activity has been driven by a number of factors.

The Report found that IoT botnet DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) traffic, originating from a large number of insecure IoT devices with the aim of disrupting telecom network services for millions of users, increased fivefold over the past year, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and stemming from the growing increase in profit-driven hacking collectives operated by #cybercriminals.

  • Sharp Growth on Ransom DDoS attacks

Sharp Growth on Ransom DDoS attacks

There's been a significant rise in distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks accompanied by threats of extortion, with criminals demanding ransom payments in exchange for calling off an attack. Cybercriminals have been emboldened to attack as they find that more people and organizations go online without the necessary precautions and cyber defenses. DDoS attacks hit a record high in Q4 2021. Compared to Q3 2021, the total number of Distributed Denial of Service attacks in Q4 shows an increase of 52%. This is 4.5 times more than the same time last year. The DDoS threat landscape is constantly changing, reflecting the current economic and social trends. DDoS attacks pose problems for organisations when attackers flood servers and online infrastructure with requests for access, slowing down services or taking them fully offline, thus preventing legitimate users from accessing services at all – and cutting off business for the affected organisation. Cyber extortion comes in different forms. However, they are all bound by the common goal of threatening an individual or organization with disruption, inconvenience, or reputational damage unless a ransom is paid. From ransomware to the use of online scandal videos to extort celebrities or well-known personalities, the threat of cyber extortion should not be downplayed. It is important to be ready for them with the knowledge and prevention tools.

According to Cloudflare, just over one in five DDoS attacks was accompanied by a ransom note from the attacker during 2021. In December, a prime time for online retailers in the run up to Christmas, one in three of the organisations surveyed said they received a ransom letter relating to a DDoS attack. Targets on the receiving end of DDoS attacks can commonly include online retailers, online local governments, cloud-based business applications, streaming services and online games. Secondly, these cyberattacks are used for extortion. Instead of attacking a business

  • The Changing mindset into Cybersecurity Hygiene

The Changing mindset into Cybersecurity Hygiene

It is absolutely true that, Ransomware is on the rise. In both the physical and digital worlds, the primary way criminals get in is through an unlocked door. Organizations that do not apply or maintain basic security hygiene like patching, applying updates, or turning on multifactor authentication will face much greater exposure to attacks, including ransomware or Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS). The most secure company is the one that recently was breached.” The reasoning was that companies that recently experienced a material breach would naturally make the investments necessary to strengthen their security program to minimize the likelihood of such an event occurring again. On the surface, this seems that it would be true, particularly for companies experiencing a system-encrypting ransomware event. However, companies don’t show improvement in the cybersecurity hygiene of their internet presence one year after a system-encrypting ransomware event. At best, they take one step forward and one step back, showing improvement in software patching and degradation in restricting access to unsafe network services. Cybercriminals are using malware that is posed as legitimate software updates causing an increase in insider risk.

Basic security hygiene still protects against 98% of attacks. The increasing prevalence of cloud-based services, mobile computing, Internet of Things (IoT), and “bring your own device” (BYOD) in hybrid work environments has changed the technology landscape for today’s enterprise. Security architectures that rely on network firewalls and virtual private networks (VPNs) to isolate and restrict access to corporate technology resources and services are no longer sufficient for a workforce that regularly requires access to applications and resources that exist beyond traditional corporate network boundaries. The shift to the internet as the network of choice and the continuously evolving threats led Microsoft to adopt a Zero Trust security

  • As every company becomes a digital company, Innovation is at risk

As every company becomes a digital company, Innovation is at risk

    #digital #covid19

As digital engagement grows, customers expect companies to digitize their operations for multichannel, high-touch interactions. As per a report, 88% of customers expect companies to accelerate digital initiatives due to COVID-19. Customers expect companies to accelerate their digital transformation. As every company becomes a digital company. 78% of customers said that this year's crises should be a catalyst for business improvement. The new-age customer is all about speed, comfort, and ease of access. They don’t prefer to fill out lengthy forms or go through the process of copying, printing, signing, and scanning documents. Manual procedures will soon be completely eliminated and replaced with fully automated processes to provide clients with a single digital solution.

FinTech Apps now come with document reading, file transfer, and data capture capabilities and can disburse loans in minutes. About 40% of workers are now employed remotely on a semi-permanent basis. This necessitates the use of digital technologies to provide safe access to files and to promote collaboration. High levels of accuracy are needed when translating physical documents into various digital formats. The need of the hour is the FinTech developers to create apps that collect data easily and reliably, allowing data processing to speed up. With this the role of payment gateway becomes very crucial, as the gateway keeps the payments ecosystem rolling smoothly, as it enables online payments for consumers and businesses.
