5G network can be misused
There are warnings against the vulnerabilities of the high-speed 5G telecom network, according to papers submitted at a key security meet, which have noted that it can provide an excellent platform for middlemen and agents for creating linkages for crimes such as drug trafficking, human and organ trafficking, money laundering and terror financing.
The papers, written by some Indian Police Service officers, were submitted at the just-concluded conference of director generals of police and inspector general of police attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Addressing the issues that arise along with such network systems, a few Indian Police Service (IPS) officers have submitted a report at a top cop's meeting. Warning against the many loopholes and vulnerabilities of the high-speed 5G network, the Police officials looked into several key security concerns.
The IPS officers who wrote the papers suggested that a reserved 5G bandwidth and highly secured equipment should be developed proactively for sensitive government-related communications and for military usage and only approved and authenticated firms with the least cyber risk or with maximum safety protocols should be allowed to work in for the government agencies.
The #5Gnetwork core is built on easily accessible and open Internet protocols such as HTTP and Transport Layer Security (TLS). In a Network-Slicing environment, different sub-networks will have different natures of cyber security. Keys for radio interface encryption are delivered across unsecured routes. Vulnerabilities such as IDOR (Insecure Direct Object Reference) could arise.
Secondly, the Telco cloud is vulnerable to cyber-attacks, which can compromise the security of the network and the data stored in the cloud, the papers said. Government issues SOP for employees against cyber attacks
The government has decided to step up its vigilance in response to China's repeated attempts at #cyberwarfare. Employees across ministries and public sector units are being asked to adhere to a standard operating protocol, which includes basic hygiene like turning off computers, signing out of emails, and updating passwords. The irresponsible behaviour by stakeholders and employees often exposes them to risks.
In recent months, there have been a number of cyberattacks on the Indian power grid and more recently the #AIIMScyberattack, which have been foiled by Indian authorities. Most of these attacks are believed to have been carried out by Chinese hackers who operate as "sleeper cells" using the computers of Indian users.
As per the report, official sources revealed that the AIIMS cyberattack is believed to have been the result of one employee not taking these precautions. Workers frequently fail to log off of their computers or sign out of their emails, and we suspect that this may have happened at AIIMS as well. It was a sophisticated ransomware attack. We have to wait for the outcome of CERTin and NIA (National Investigation Agency) before we come to any conclusion as to who is behind the ransomware attack.

The government has a standard operating procedure in place to deal with these attacks, but has now decided to enforce it more strictly, and is considering action against employees who fail to follow it. Most of the other major PC makers experienced business decline, with most in double digit territory. Whereas, Gartner says that, the worldwide PC shipments were down 19.6%, again with comparable losses for competitors, but with another big discrepancy in the Apple number with Gartner finding it falling 15.6% year over year.
As per Canalys, adverse macroeconomic and industry factors including high inflation, rising interest rates and bloated channel inventories have dented the PC market’s momentum, and are likely to persist into 2023. Notebook shipments suffered the most, posting a year-on-year decline of 19% with 54.7 million units shipped. Desktop shipments proved more robust due to less reliance on consumer spending, falling 11% year-on-year for a total of 14.7 million units.
Lenovo maintained pole position in the global PC market but suffered a 16% year-on-year drop to 16.9 million units. For the second quarter in a row, HP underwent the largest decline out of the top five vendors as it posted 12.7 million units, a 28% year-on-year fall.
Both Lenovo and HP shipped their lowest totals since the onset of the pandemic in Q1 2020. Third-placed Dell also posted a significant decline of 21% in shipments, posting just under 12 million units.
Apple enjoyed a better quarter than its competitors as it fulfilled orders from Q2 delayed due to supply disruptions in China and launched new M2 Macbooks. Phishing Gets More Sophisticated — Phishing attacks, in which carefully targeted digital messages are transmitted to fool people into clicking on a link that can then install malware or expose sensitive data, are becoming more sophisticated.

The SOVA Trojan
Previously, #Sova focused on countries like the USA, Russia and Spain and since July 2022 it is now targeting India. The latest version of this malware hides itself within fake Android apps that show up with the logo of a few famous legitimate apps like Chrome, Amazon, NFT platform to deceive users into installing them.
This virus is one of the most dangerous viruses for mobile net banking users in India. It is hard to uninstall and is the fifth version of the first detected virus in Indian cyberspace.
SOVA has other harmful capabilities like keylogging, DDoS, overlay attacks, notification manipulation, and more. Security researchers have also found a rare feature in the malware which allows the SOVA malware to steal session cookies, this feature enables the malware to login into banking accounts without the username and password of the user.
Once the fake android application is installed on the phone, it sends the list of all applications installed on the device to the Command and control server controlled by the threat actor in order to obtain the list of targeted applications, said #CERTIn.
It further says, at this point, the C2 sends back to the malware the list of addresses for each targeted application and stores this information inside an XML file. These targeted applications are then managed through the communications between the malware and the C2.
It has the capability to encrypt all the data. This was reported by the country’s federal #cybersecurity agency. The key feature of SOVA is it is a banking trojan, and is very smart in action. It recodes the protection module that aims to save itself from different victims' actions. In a scenario, when the user tries to uninstall the malware from its setting options on their device.

Attackers could send the link to the sites in an SMS that is made to look like it is coming from a bank or other service provider. They typically create a sense of urgency so that users don’t take time to think before clicking on the link. Such domains identified by the researchers pose as fake complaint portals.
After installation, the malicious application is then used to send all incoming messages on the victims’ phones to the servers controlled by the scammer. The attackers haven’t used logos or names of Indian banks in order to avoid attracting suspicion and detection. The malicious app is not hosted on the Google Play Store or any third-party application stores.

Let me detail the string of ransomware attacks in which BlackCat used unpatched or outdated firewalls and VPN services to infiltrate vulnerable networks and systems worldwide across various industries.
BlackCat ransomware first emerged in November 2021 as the self-declared newest “leader” in the ransomware-as-a-service business, and quickly drew attention for its unusual coding language, Rust.
Reports say, the initial infection occurred by exploiting vulnerabilities in different firewall vendors’ products. One of these vulnerabilities was from 2018 and another emerged last year. Once inside the network, the attackers were able to obtain VPN credentials stored on these firewalls to log in as authorized users and then move laterally throughout the systems using remote desktop protocol (RDP).
As seen in prior BlackCat incidents, the attackers also leveraged open source and commercially available tools to create additional backdoors and alternative pathways for remote access to targeted systems. These included TeamViewer, nGrok, Cobalt Strike, and Brute Ratel.
The BlackCat ransomware-as-a-service group, which may be a rebrand of the DarkSide or BlackMatter ransomware groups, is also known as Alphv. Its malware is coded with Rust, a programming language known for fast performance and structural protections against some types of bugs. Analysis by cybersecurity firm Varonis shows the group actively recruiting operators with promises that affiliates can keep 90% of victims' pay-outs.
