It’s time to Focus on creating ‘work’ opportunities’
The Covid-19 pandemic and the pathogen’s steady stream of variants have brought unprecedented disruption in the workplace and forced many professions to adopt technology. It also brought to the fore the fact that not every work or job required occupying space in an office. If we look at the global employment figure of around 3.33 billion, around 2 billion people operate in an informal employment mode; of this, the gig economy is already touching 200 million. Gig economy today ranges from ride-sharing, deliveries, home-services, beauty and wellness to even gig-work in the hi-tech space such as coding, project management, marketing, fintech, pharma, edu-tech and so on. Even MGNREGA, technically, is another form of gig work. The prime minister recently mentioned that 800 million people in India received free ration and benefited from the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. This also indicates that a vast section of the population is still vulnerable, and we need to work harder to create more work opportunities for their livelihood. With the advent of internet and smartphone penetration, the gig economy started to grow, and due to its flexible and participatory nature, it gave the freedom and opportunity for workers to choose days/hours one wanted to engage to earn. However, one concern that kept everyone awake was social coverage and safety.
The ministry of labour has demonstrated India’s progressive outlook and is the first to acknowledge the growing number of workers associated with the unorganised sector and gig by extending social security benefits to them. Almost all notable start-ups operating in the gig economy space provide the gig workers with some form of social security cover like insurance and other benefits, and have often supplemented these provisions with additional voluntary provisions in many cases. In the year 2020, The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology invoked issued directions for blocking the mobile applications under section 69A of IT Act 2000. Such is the set-up of SPPIN which has been created to penetrate into the India e-commerce markets and is utilising the Chinese investments through multiple and complex corporate structuring. SPPIN is incorporated in India to operate globally established e-commerce platform, Shoppe. The e-commerce brand Shoppe is owned and operated worldwide by SEA Limited, an entity incorporated within the jurisdiction of Cayman Islands with offices in Singapore. The founder is Forrest Xiaodong Li, a Chinese born, recently turned Singaporean citizen. SEA Limited is backed by Tencent, which owns approx 43% of class B shares.
As such no key business decision in SEA Limited can be taken without the approval of Tencent. Recently, Tencent Cloud Computing (Beijing) company limited is disclosed as a related party to SEA Limited in its annual reporting to the Securities and Exchange Commission, United States. Further, the disclosure also states that SEA Limited uses Tencent Cloud to store their data. At the same time, the privacy policy states that, Your Personal data and /or information may be transferred to, stored or processed outside of India. In most cases, your personal Data will be transferred to Singapore to be processed, where its servers are located. It logically states that the data which will be collected from Indian citizens by Shoppe through SPPIN will be stored and processed on Tencent Cloud. It shows how smartly the Chinese tech majors may have manipulated documents to meet the regulatory compliances.

Security Vulnerabilities in WiFi chips
Researchers from Darmstadt University of Brescia, CNIT, and the Secure Mobile Networking Lab, have discovered security vulnerabilities in WiFi chips that can be exploited to extract passwords and manipulate traffic on a WiFi chip by targeting a device’s Bluetooth component. Modern consumer devices such as smartphones or tablets have single-chip systems (SoCs) with separate Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and LTE modules, each with their own security implementation. Most often, however, these components share the same resources, such as the antenna or the frequency spectrum. Due to this, the developers manage to make the SoC more energy efficient. In addition, throughput is increased and data transmission delays are reduced. The researchers said that the shared resources of wireless modules can be in use by attackers as bridges to launch privilege escalation attacks. After carrying out such an attack, an attacker can remotely execute code on the target device; as well as read data from memory and affect its performance.
The researchers have detailed in a recently published paper that it is possible to use these shared resources as bridges for launching lateral privilege escalation attacks across wireless chip boundaries. Researchers have worked with a variety of wireless adapters from Broadcom, Cypress and Silicon Labs; that are in use in billions of electronic devices around the world. All vulnerabilities found are reported to the vendors, and some of them release appropriate security fixes whenever possible. However, not everyone does this, since in some cases the support period for devices has already ended; or it is simply impossible to fix the problem with software patches. The implications of these attacks include code execution, memory readout, and denial of service. The Indian SaaS space has the potential to create $1 trillion in value and nearly five lakh jobs by 2030, as businesses around the world accelerate digitization and automation, A new study says. There are more than a thousand funded startups and 10 unicorns in the country’s SaaS sector, generating as much as $3 billion in annual subscription revenues, according to a report of SaaSBoomi. The report further says, the industry, which currently employs 40,000 workers, could generate annual revenues of as much as $70 billion by 2030 and win as much as 6% of the global market. However, many startups face challenges in accessing capital during their early stages and attracting skilled talent to grow. The industry may need to boost funding at three to four times the current level to reach their potential over the next 10 years.
Despite the challenges, “India has an exciting opportunity to propel itself on to the world stage as a SaaS force to be reckoned with. SaaS and software accounted for $600 billion of the $3 trillion in global enterprise IT and communications spending last year. The industry is growing at an 8% annual rate, twice the pace of the overall IT market. Covid-19 has created a further push toward SaaS, with six Indian SaaS unicorns created during the pandemic. The report highlights, more than 1,000 SaaS companies are operating in India as of now and more than 150 SaaS start-ups have $1 million in ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue), with this the global SaaS market will grow at a pace of 18-20% each year, with more than $500 billion in revenue by 2025.

India is increasingly seeing a big opportunity in edge data centres. Going forward, we will witness there are various Tier-II cities in the country to come out with edge data centres, will be located closer to the end-users and are on the edge of the network.
