  • Metaverse to disrupt e-comm experience

    Metaverse to disrupt e-comm experience

#Metaverse technology will allow brands to offer shoppers a highly personalized digital experience. Where, the shoppers are able to purchase products and brands that don’t have a physical presence in their regions but can still be acquired online and delivered right at their doorsteps.

The metaverse is reshaping the way brands do business and how consumers behave. Right now, we’re seeing big and small companies across various sectors venture into the digital world.

According to Statista, the global e-commerce market reached $4.9 trillion in 2021 and is expected to hit $5.5 trillion in 2022. E-commerce platform, Shopify, stated that the growth of the global e-commerce market shows that “borderless e-commerce is becoming a profitable option for online retailers.”

While e-commerce represents a divide between physical and digital shopping experiences, the emergence of the metaverse can bridge the gap between e-commerce and brick-and-mortar retail to create a whole new shopping experience that could disrupt e-commerce.

Metaverse technology such as AR-powered try-on experiences already allows shoppers to virtually try on products before making the purchase, transforming 2D catalogues into real-time experiences in the digital world.

The potential of the metaverse to connect customers with brands in ways that create an exceptional emotionally positive experience cannot be understated. The metaverse will empower customers to traverse the virtual and physical worlds when connecting with the business of their choice, turning the notifications and transactions of the past into intelligent, real-time conversations — that is what will differentiate businesses moving forward.

70% of customers believe the ability to try, touch and see products are the main aspects of an in-store experience. This is going to be solved and fulfilled in the metaverse, as AR and VR allow the same to happen, all from the comfort of your home.

  • UPI to reinforce digital payments

    UPI to reinforce digital payments

India has developed one of the most modern payment systems in the world, be it large value, retail or fast. Payments Vision 2025 leverages India’s efforts and builds on the focus of G-20 to enhance cross-border payments by addressing the four key challenges of cost, speed, access and transparency.

Given the dynamic space of payment systems in the financial services space, efforts shall be conditioned by developments and readiness of the ecosystem to accept and further these initiatives.

#UnifiedPaymentsInterface is an instant real-time payment system developed by National Payments Corporation of India. The interface facilitates inter-bank peer-to-peer and person-to-merchant transactions. It is regulated by the Reserve Bank of India and works by instantly transferring funds between two bank accounts on a mobile platform. This will enable the last-mile consumers to reap the benefits of an open interoperable payments system driving immediate payment transfers between bank accounts and merchant payments in real-time.

With this magnificent growth, BFSI leaders are positive about the development, and they say, UPI will stand in the next five years and it will further help in building a cashless economy. The transactions through Unified Payment Interface have crossed one trillion US dollar mark in financial year 2022 and today India is first in global digital transactions.

After Singapore, UAE, Nepal and Bhutan, France will be the next country to accept payments using the Unified Payments Interface and RuPay Cards. BFSI leaders are positive about the development, and they share their views on where UPI will stand in the next five years and how it will further help in building a cashless economy.

UPI has turned out to be one of the best fintech innovations in India, making the country one of the fastest-growing digital economies in the world. The recent announcements of linking credit cards on the UPI platform and the MoU signed

The ransomware situation in India is worrying

As many as 78% of Indian organisations were hit with ransomware in 2021, up from 68% in 2020, and some of the entities paid over Rs 76 crore as ransom to get their data back, cybersecurity firm Sophos said in the report. As per the report, the average ransom paid by Indian organizations that had data encrypted in their most significant ransomware attack was USD 1,198,475 (around Rs 9 crore) with 10 percent of victims paying ransoms of USD 1 million or more and some 10% of victims paid ransoms of $1 million or more. Three companies in the survey admitted to having paid a ransom of USD 10 million and more to get back their data and keep it safe. The ransomware situation in India is worrying. The numbers of victims, ransom payments and the impact of these attacks continued to rise during 2021, at considerable cost. The survey covered the impact of ransomware on 5,600 mid-sized organizations in 31 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, including 300 in India. The report found that 78 percent of organizations that had data encrypted in a ransomware attack paid the ransom in 2021 and it was the highest rate of ransom payment reported across all 31 countries surveyed.

Ransomware attacks include attackers sending malware to your phones and other devices, which then proceeds to infect your devices and servers, eventually locking you out of them and preventing any access to your files and data. At this point attackers usually demand a ransom in exchange for getting access to your files again. While the average expense of recovering from an incident declined to USD 2.8 million from USD 3.4 million in 2020, it remains a significant number that should be sounding alarm bells among management teams of Indian firms. In 2021, the percentage of victim organisations directly impacted by ransomware increased from 68 to 78 per cent. Ransomware isn't something that might happen, it is something that will happen if

  • The saga behind the computer chip shortage

The saga behind the computer chip shortage

Hundreds of billions will be spent by governments and corporations in coming years on a 'chip race' with geopolitical as well as economic implications. The stay-at-home era caused by Covid-19 pushed demand beyond levels projected by chipmakers. Lockdowns spurred growth in sales of laptops to its highest in a decade. There is worldwide dependence on two Asian powerhouses -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and Samsung Electronics Co. -- a reliance exacerbated by the pandemic and rising U.S.-China tensions even before the current deficit.

Home-networking gears, webcams and monitors were snapped up as office work moved out of the office, and Chromebooks as school left school. Sales also jumped for home appliances from TVs to air purifiers, all of which now come with customized chips. PC makers began warning about tight supply of semiconductors early in 2020. Then by mid-year, Huawei Technologies Co. -- a major smartphone and networking gear maker -- began hoarding components to ensure its survival from U.S. sanctions that threatened to cut it off from its primary suppliers. Other Chinese companies followed suit, and the country’s imports of chips climbed to almost 380 billion dollars in 2020 -- making up almost a fifth of the country’s overall imports for the year. Chip shortages are expected to wipe out 61 billion dollars of sales for automakers alone this year and delay the production of a million vehicles in the March quarter. Not only cars but possibly a broad spectrum of chip-heavy products from phones to gaming consoles could see shortages or price hikes. With all this we are expecting a “serious imbalance" to pose a problem to the chip business this year.

Ethereum dominates crypto gains, says Chainalysis

While the regulations on Bitcoin in India is not yet clear, the Supreme Court asked the central government to make its stand clear on the cryptocurrencies, however, the investment into cryptocurrency is skyrocketing. A recent report says, India has ranked 21st with realized gains of around $1.85 billion. The central government is preparing a Bill to regulate cryptocurrency and other digital assets in India. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2022 announced that the central government will levy a steep tax at 30% on virtual assets including cryptocurrencies and Nonfungible tokens. For this crypto tax, Budget 2022 proposed to introduce a new section 115BBH to levy income tax on cryptocurrencies and other virtual assets. The newly proposed cryptocurrency tax will be applicable from Assessment Year 2023-24. That means all your income from crypto transactions in FY 2022-23 will be taxed at the rate of 30%. Investors have to pay tax according to the existing taxation rules for FY 2021-22. Blockchain data analytics firm Chainalysis has found that the total cryptocurrency gains worldwide amounted to $163 billion in 2021, which was 5x the previous year or a 400% increase. Investors around the world realized total gains of $162.7 billion in 2021, compared to just $32.5 billion in 2020.

According to Chainalysis, the United States lead by a wide margin at an estimated $47 billion in realized cryptocurrency gains, followed by the UK, Germany, Japan, and China. Meanwhile, India ranked a lowly 21st with realized gains of around $1.85 billion. The report highlights that Ethereum edged out Bitcoin in total realized gains globally at $76.3 billion to $74.7 billion. Bitcoin, the world's most traded cryptocurrency, leapt 60% to finish 2021 at about $46,300. Ether, the token currency for the ethereum blockchain network, jumped about 400% in 2021, landing at around $3,650. There is a strong belief this reflects increased demand for Ethereum as the resu

2022 will be the golden year for the growth of MSMEs

The SMEs & MSMEs have suffered tremendously due to Covid-19 and need the strongest support from the Government in coming years like a specific five-year plan for their revival and growth as they are the major contributor to India’s economy and social development. In India, the sector has gained significant importance due to its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product of the country, approximately 30% and exports, approximately 49%. This sector has also contributed immensely concerning entrepreneurship development especially in semi-urban and rural areas of India. Most importantly they generate large-scale employment for an unskilled or semi-skilled workforce of India. The digital adoption trend in India is going strong, and most of the FinTechs are working closely with MSMEs. The MSME ecosystem has been more resilient in 2021. Digital adoption, phased lockdowns, and MSME preparedness seem to have contributed to business strength. With lockdowns and restrictions being a constant reality in the pandemic world, the MSMEs are paying more attention to their cash flow and financial management. 2022 seems to be a growth year for MSME. Within MSME, segments like retail have struggled a bit more with the recovery while Pharma has grown during the Pandemic. But overall, the MSME is almost back to full recovery. In the last couple of years, we saw tremendous digital adoption by this segment. Small businesses transitioned from their offline workflows to digital platforms.

MSMEs is now the second-largest employment provider segment in India. In India, the sector has gained significant importance due to its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product of the country and exports. Fintech will play an integral part in boosting MSMEs. MSMEs are being encouraged to market their products on the e-commerce site, especially through Government e-Marketplace, owned and run by the government, wherefrom Ministries and public sector undertakings source their procurement. Digital payments empowering rural economy

With growing urbanization and widespread access to information, the country has entered into a highly disruptive phase of India’s economic phase. The government must therefore ensure that the benefits of economic growth reach every single citizen of India. According to Forbes World’s Billionaires list 2021, while the number of billionaires is rising, the number of empty stomachs too is increasing. Today, the number of Indian billionaires is at 140, positioned as the third highest in the world behind the US and China. The number rose to 140 this year from 102 in 2020 despite the Covid-19 pandemic shattering the economy and multiplying unemployment. When we look at the data points of NITI Aayog, even before the pandemic, about 52% of all agricultural households in India were in debt with average outstanding loan amount of Rs 47,000 against the average monthly income of Rs. 6,426 per agricultural household. At the same time, the Ministry of Electronics and IT launched a scheme in rural India, by the title, “Digital Finance for Rural India: Creating Awareness and Access through Common Service Centres”. It aimed at setting CSCs as Digital Financial Hubs, by spreading awareness regarding government policies and digital finance options available for rural citizens.

India, a developing nation, is a country of 1.39 billion people. Out of which, about 65 percent of the population lives in rural India, and 35 percent lives in urban India. The urban centers contribute around 63 percent to the GDP, while around 27 percent contribution comes from the rural economy. The rural population has a significant part to play in the economic development of the country. Indian telecom industry facing headwinds

The telecom industry had been facing headwinds since the launch of services by Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) which manifested into decline in revenue and profit generation. Further, the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) penalty added to the woes of the industry and has kept the debt levels elevated. Owing to these reasons, the financial position of Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) has been deteriorating due to mounting losses and increasing debt levels. As per an ICRA note, this stress on VIL is likely to impact financial as well as other stakeholders and can impact the industry structure. It has been observed that as VIL owes Rs 23,400 crore to lenders and Rs 1,68,190 crore to government towards spectrum and AGR deferred dues as on June 30, 2021. Over the last 12 quarters starting Q2FY2019, VIL has been reporting sizable losses.

Further, with the addition of AGR liabilities, the debt has burgeoned to more than Rs 2 lakh crore as on June 30, 2021 (including lease liabilities). This, along with churn in the subscriber base, mostly stagnant 4G user base, and pressure on ARPU levels have kept the revenue and profit generation muted. As per ICRA, the most effective relief can come in the form of extension of moratorium on spectrum dues beyond FY2022, a move that could result in deferment of dues payable in FY2023 to the tune of Rs 32,000 crore for the industry, of which Rs 16,000 crore are VIL's. Moreover, reduction in the levies paid by telcos, namely license fee and spectrum usage charges can also lift the EBITDA. An estimation states, one per cent reduction in levies leads to annual saving of Rs 1,600 crore for the industry. VIL occupies 35% tenancy share and 36% revenue share. In a situation of VIL shutting down operations, 255 million subscribers of VIL to get impacted and tower companies will have to face a loss of these tenan

    Is Pegasus over??

Pegasus spyware has taken the world by a storm. Developed by an Israeli cyber arms firm, NSO group, Pegasus can be secretly installed on mobile phones and other iOS and android devices without even a single user click. It snoops into text messages, tracks calls, passwords, location and even steals sensitive data from apps. Discovered in 2016, the malicious spyware used jailbreak to gain access to an iPhone. The trojan horse has been reported to be sold to the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf states including India for surveillance purposes. In July 2021, it was revealed by human rights group Amnesty International that the project Pegasus has been used to tap phones of high profile targets including more than 300 journalists, politicians and media activists in India. This is not the first time such a revelation was made. Such attacks were reported even in 2018-19 when Whatsapp wajed a legal battle in the U.S against NSO alleging NSO had hacked into Whatsapp video calls in several devices.

NSO group claims it sells the technology to authorised governments but little is known if that is the case. Whether the same has been used for criminal and national security investigations alone or to commit corporate espionage or unauthorised surveillance is a pertinent question. If used unauthorizedly, or illegally , it would tantamount to invasion of privacy and a gross violation of human rights. Are we following the rule of law in India? Although many of these safeguards are built into the extant IT Act and rules, the Personal Data Protection bill is yet underway and there is little or no evidence to question invasion of privacy through hacking and/or arbitrary exercise of surveillance powers. Though Section 66 of IT Act, 2000 entitles a user to seek compensation for unauthorised access and copying of personal data and Section 43A entitles a user to sue a body corporate for fa

Digital skills are shaping up the future talent and the workforce

    #AirtelPaymentsBank #Chime #IndianCyberCrimeCoordinationCentre

We are living through a fundamental transformation in the way we work. Automation and 'thinking machines' are replacing human tasks, changing the skills that organisations are looking for in their people. Digital technologies demand that people acquire new skills. And people are demanding new ways of working. At the same time, digitally fluent organizations capture strong returns in innovation, people experience and customer value. We can’t deny the fact that digital transformation is less about technology and more about people. You can pretty much buy any technology, but your ability to adapt to an even more digital future depends on developing the next generation of skills, closing the gap between talent supply and demand, and future-proofing your own and others’ potential.

As the world races towards greater digitisation, accelerated since the global pandemic hit, new and disruptive forms of engaging with technology are becoming commonplace in many parts of our lives – including in our work and careers. Digital skills are now essential in every sector, and the ability for organisations to foster continued learning in the workplace will prove crucial in future-proofing career paths – and ensuring business health and longevity. With this more and more organisations are encouraged to adopt, deploy and use digital technologies, including data analytics and Artificial Intelligence tools, it is important and should ensure that people are equipped with the skills they need to thrive in the future. Everyone should have the skills and confidence to make the most of the
opportunities digital technology can bring. Going forward, the workplace and workforce of the future take shape, with changing roles, relationships and demands. There has been a rapid shift towards remote work, innovation and automation, enabled by the ubiquity of technology and the digital economy.
