Adoption of Metaverse increases
The metaverse is a fast-growing trend with a considerate penetration rate of users for various applications such as gaming, content creation, social interaction, learning & training, and online virtual shopping.
Major factors expected to drive the revenue growth include a growing focus on integrating digital and physical worlds using the Internet, increasing momentum and popularity of Mixed Reality, Augmented Reality, and Virtual Reality.
Today, several e-commerce players are adopting digital world services to showcase the products in the virtual world to gain real-world experience. There are leading players in the metaverse industry who are investing heavily into these areas. Going forward, 5G will effectively support the Metaverse and make it possible for digital words to function.
The growth is complementing the surge in online video gaming adoption and rising consumers preference for online shopping of retail products. A report says, the global gaming audience for e-sports is projected to reach 646 million by 2023. Such an increase in the gaming audiences has created a massive demand for the services market.
American multinational investment bank Goldman Sachs, calls metaverse a $8 trillion global opportunity by 2025 with India's own Metaverse-non-fungible technology economy—already worth an estimated $50-100 million annually— and is expected to touch $100 billion by 2025.
The report said that globally brands are already spending 2-5% of their digital budgets on NFTs (the most successful element of metaverse till date), and that could touch 30-40% in the next five years.
Notably, companies, especially those in non-tech sectors, are now increasingly investing in the technology for better engagement with customers, brand awareness expansion, and identification of new revenue streams.

India will have more than 250 Unicorns by 2025. The country has now been positioned as the 3rd largest unicorn hub in the world and surpassing even major countries such as the UK, Germany, France, and more. Moreover, it becomes the fastest growing startup ecosystem and creating a unicorn every five days. As per the report published in the Economic Times on January 15, 2022, India – with 90 unicorns – is the third-largest unicorn hub behind the US (487) and China (301) and ahead of the UK (39). Indian unicorns are also exploring the public listing avenues as a next step to realize the growth potential. This prediction comes from the proprietary data analysis of venture growth investor, Iron Pillar, in its Tech Unicorns Market Landscape Report IV. InMobi was India’s first unicorn in 2011. Entrepreneurs are building bigger enterprises at a faster rate -- 50 per cent of the 130 companies reached unicorn status in the first five years after their initial institutional fundraising. The public listing of 12 Unicorns is another indicator of the increasing maturity of the Indian tech ecosystem. While there is a strong belief that this pace may reduce a bit in the next 24 months, creating 250 companies with over $1 billion in value by 2025 is an extremely activable goal for Indian founders.
India is on a global growth story. Thus, lots of global funds and investors are chasing assets. The internet companies in India do not even control 1% of the $3.4 trillion domestic equity market. In the US, the internet ecosystem dominates with 40% of the market capitalisation. The surge in fund inflows into startups to the digital transformation has disrupted everything in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic-induced lockdowns have driven this rally, and that along with the huge market potential for these companies has caught the attention of global investors. The attitudes of both employees and employers towards hybrid working - a style of working that allows for a more balanced home-office work pattern - have fundamentally changed due to the pandemic, according to GlobalData. The leading data and analytics company notes that this is good news for tech companies producing collaboration and communication (C&C) services such as Zoom that have seen a boost from remote working over the pandemic. C&C tech acted as a life vest for businesses forced to move to remote working. Their use will only continue as these enterprises step into the future of hybrid working. Companies have growing commitments to environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals, which means they have to demonstrate the benefits to society and address customers’ environmental concerns – all enabled by C&C services.
Over time, the market is bound to consolidate – as evidenced by Zoom’s agreed deal to buy Five9 for around $14.7bn. The generally accepted ‘marketing rule of three’ indicates that as individual markets mature, they tend to be dominated by three dominant players, so the battle has started to gain a place at the top table. Experts predict that “Zoom’s deal is just the start of what will be an onslaught of C&C mergers and acquisitions.”Another key trend is the migration from upfront investment-heavy, on-premises products to pay-as-you-go-based cloud solutions, often from new competitors such as Facebook and Google. Facebook’s ‘Workplace’ now has over seven million paying business customers, while Google’s ‘Workspace’ is being actively marketed as a solution for hybrid meetings.

YC Deveshwar, chairman of the ITC group, passed away this morning. He was 72. The cause of his death is not known. He was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago.
