Security and Risk Management Spending
The increase in adoption of digitalization, cloud applications and the rise in remote workers exposes Indian organizations to greater security risks. In addition, growing concerns on the rising number of ransomware attacks coupled with stringent government measures on digital data protection and security breach reporting are pressing chief information security officers (CISOs) to increase their security and risk management spending for 2023.
End-user spending on security and risk management in India is forecast to total $2.65 billion in 2023, an increase of 8.3% from 2022, as per Gartner. Security Services to remain a Key Spending Priority for Indian CISOs in 2023.
Like 2022, security services will remain the segment that will achieve the highest levels of end-user spending in India in 2023. Security services spending is expected to represent 40% of overall end-user spending on security and risk management products and services in 2023.
Secondly, many organizations in India lack in-house security capabilities, and as result, they engage security consulting and IT outsourcing companies to meet their requirements.
In 2023, spending on infrastructure protection will surpass spending on network security equipment because of an increase in the remote workforce and in cloud applications adoption. Both are shifting focus from network security to endpoint security, which is a sub-segment of the infrastructure protection segment, forecast to grow 13.5% in 2023.
In addition, cloud security end-user spending in India is forecast to experience the highest growth rate among all the other segments in 2023. The segment is projected to grow 25.8% in 2023 as Indian organizations increasingly switch to cloud workloads and applications.

Global eCommerce Payment Frauds spikes In 2021
In one hand, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of e-commerce worldwide, on the other, it has led to the rise of e-commerce related frauds. According to a new study from Juniper Research, it has been found out that the value of e-commerce fraud-related losses has risen from $17.5 billion in 2020 to $20 billion by 2021, a staggering growth of a whopping 18% within a single year. The research found out that threat actors, as of late, are targeting consumers as they have increased their online shopping. And this, in turn, is exposing the insecure fraud mitigation processes of merchants who are not very familiar with the overwhelming fraud challenges that exist in the e-commerce space.
Increased security can easily lead to increased friction for consumers when it comes to payments. The new research report found out that while merchants are inclined towards reducing e-com fraud risks from their current levels, they are hesitant to introduce extra friction in the checkout process. Juniper Research found also revealed that one way to address this would be to include clear messaging about security checks to consumers and use automated behavioural analytics, which leverages A.I. to preserve the user experience, aka UX. The research highlighted that, merchants would need to make sure the extra layer of security checks are well justified to the user. Only then can they prevent higher cart abandonment rates while making sure they are lowering fraud risks at the same time.

Now information that was previously assumed to be relatively private is in the hands of malicious parties who can leverage it to easily impersonate their victims.” SIM swapping is a scam in which malicious parties target cell phone carriers to gain access to victims’ bank accounts, virtual currency accounts and additional sensitive information by using social engineering, insider threat or phishing techniques. Social engineering involves a criminal to impersonate the victim’s mobile number by tricking the cell phone carrier into switching the victim’s mobile number to a SIM card that is in the criminal’s possession, allowing the malicious party to access the victim’s calls, texts and other data, but this is only one of the three methods used to steal funds from victims.
FBI encourages mobile users to first contact their mobile carriers immediately to regain control of their phone number, then accessing their online accounts to change their passwords that protect their sensitive data. Insider threat takes place when a criminal actor pays off a mobile carrier employee to switch the victim’s SIM to a card currently in the criminal’s possession. Hackers Run Token Scams to “Rug Pull” Money
Check Point Research shows how scammers misconfigure smart contracts to create fraudulent tokens. The report details the method scammers are currently using to “rug pull” money from people and provides examples of smart contract misconfigurations that can lead to money heists. Last October, Check Point Research identified theft of crypto wallets on OpenSea, the world’s largest NFT marketplace. And last November, it revealed that hackers were using search engine phishing campaigns to steal half a million dollars in a matter of days.
In a new report, Check Point Research (CPR) exposes how hackers are creating malicious tokens to steal money.
· Some tokens contain a 99% buy fee, which will steal all your money at the buying phase.
· Some of tokens don’t allow the buyer to resell and only the owner may sell
· Some tokens contain a 99% sell fee, which will steal all your money at the selling phase.
· Some allow the owner to create more coins in his wallet and sell them.
To create fraudulent tokens, hackers misconfigured smart contracts. Smart contracts are programs stored on a blockchain that run when predetermined conditions are met. The report outlines the steps that hackers take advantage of smart contracts:
1. Leverage scam services. Hackers are usually using scam services to create the contract for them, or they copy an already known scam contract and modify the token name and symbol, and some of the function names as well if they are really sophisticated.
2. Manipulate functions. Then they will manipulate the functions with the money transfer, they will prevent you from selling, or increase the fee amount and more. Most of the manipulations will be where money is been transferred

Linux Malware Saw 35% Growth During 2021
#Linux is similar to other operating systems such as Windows, and OS X. Like other operating systems, Linux has a graphical user interface, as well as comparable versions of software commonly used on other operating systems. Its uses are as diverse as any other OS, making Linux a favored platform for use in certain areas such as web serving, networking, and databases. The number of malware infections targeting Linux devices rose by 35% in 2021, most commonly to recruit IoT devices for #DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks. IoTs are typically under-powered "smart" devices running various Linux distributions and are limited to specific functionality. However, when their resources are combined into large groups, they can deliver massive DDoS attacks to even well-protected infrastructure. Besides DDoS, Linux IoT devices are recruited to mine #cryptocurrency, facilitate spam mail campaigns, serve as relays, act as command-and-control servers, or even act as entry points into corporate networks The most prevalent Linux-based malware families in 2021 were XorDDoS, Mirai and Mozi, which collectively accounted for 22% of all Linux-based IoT malware that year. These were also a main driver of malware targeting all Linux-based systems, which grew 35% in 2021 compared with 2020.
A notable case of the malware's distribution was shown in 2021 after a Chinese threat actor known as "Winnti" was observed deploying it with other derivative botnets. The malware called Mirai turned thousands of vulnerable Linux-based routers, IP cameras and other IoT devices into a botnet that targeted Dyn and others with a massive DDoS attack. Whereas, Mozi is a P2P botnet relying on the distributed hash table (DHT) lookup system to hide suspicious C2 communications from network traffic monitoring solutions. #Ransomware is now one of the most potentially damaging — and prevalent — types of malware. With this lucrative crime, hackers break into a firm’s computer system, encrypting the data, which they will only release for a fee. A Sophos report revealed that the majority (83%) of IT teams in India said the number of phishing emails targeting their employees increased during 2020. Even government agencies are not spared. In February 2021, a number of senior Indian government officials, including those from the ministries of defence and external affairs, were targeted in a phishing campaign. According to the government officials, the attackers were using compromised government domain email accounts to launch their hacking attempts. Back in July 2020, a major Indian snacks manufacturer, Haldiram, faced a ransomware attack on its servers by hackers who allegedly encrypted all its files, data, applications and systems and demanded a ransom of 7 hundred thousand USD for giving access to the stolen data. Cybercriminals have now resorted to stealing information during an attack and threaten to publish this information on leak sites on the dark web or sell it, increasing the pressure for victims to pay the ransom.
In February 2021, India’s national airline, Air India, reported a cyberattack on their SITA passenger service systems containing personal identity information, passport data, ticket information, frequent flyer data and credit card information of about 4.5 million customers around the world. Cybersecurity Ventures predicts that ransomware damage costs will exceed $265 billion by 2031, with attacks on businesses, consumers, or devices occurring every two seconds. Whether the prediction is right or wrong, the message stays the same. Businesses need to plan, implement effective data protection and ransomware prevention solutions, and back up their data. The reason is very simple, Since the return on investment for attackers is simply too attractive. By understanding the economics of today’s most prevalent cyber threats, you can wage a more effective defence, better protect valuable data and your firm’s reputation, reduce the cost of cyberattacks, and limit attackers’ returns on investment to demotivate them. If it were measured as a country, then cybercrime — which is predicted to inflict damages totalling $7 trillion USD globally in 2021 — would be the world’s third-largest economy after the U.S. and China. The interesting part is, website owners have no idea that their website got hacked, redirected to malicious sites, or is spreading malware. In most cases, those websites are owned by people who have no knowledge about cybersecurity.
Cybercrime costs include damage and destruction of data, stolen money, lost productivity, theft of intellectual property, theft of personal and financial data, embezzlement, fraud, post-attack disruption to the normal course of business, forensic investigation, restoration and deletion of hacked data and systems, and reputational harm. Cybersecurity threats for small-to-medium sized businesses (SMBs) are real. SMBs are just as likely as larger businesses to be attacked. Yet, many are much less prepared to detect and endure an attack. There is a path forward to significantly improve the risk posture of an organization with good cyber hygiene, a strategic roadmap, and a cybersecurity insurance policy. The challenge for CISOs is selecting the best tools from a sea of offerings, and then working with the Board and senior execs to deploy them within the organization.
