OTT stands for “over-the-top,” as in going above and beyond streaming cable networks or YouTube. According to an Eros Now-KPMG report, an OTT viewer in India spends approximately 70 minutes per day on video streaming platforms, with a consumption frequency of 12.5 times a week! Global PC shipments
As per Gartner, this marks the largest quarterly shipment decline since Gartner began tracking the PC market in the mid-1990s. For the entire year, PC shipments reached 286.2 million units in 2022, a 16.2% decrease from 2021 due to recession fears and increased inflation.
Experts feel since many consumers already have relatively new PCs that were purchased during the pandemic, a lack of affordability is superseding any motivation to buy, causing consumer PC demand to drop to its lowest level in years.
At the same time, the enterprise PC market is also being impacted by a slowing economy and at the same time, the PC demand among enterprises began declining in the third quarter of 2022, but the market has now shifted from softness to deterioration. Enterprise buyers are extending PC lifecycles and delaying purchases, meaning the business market will likely not return to growth until 2024.
While Lenovo maintained 24% market share at the top, the company experienced its steepest decline. Lenovo's shipments fell in all regions except in Japan, declining over 30% in EMEA and Latin America.
HP and Dell also experienced historically steep declines. HP was hit hardest in the EMEA market, where shipments decreased 44 per cent year-over-year. For Dell, weak demand in the large business market impacted shipments in the second half of 2022.
The Asia-Pacific market excluding Japan declined 29.4% year-over-year, mainly due to the market in China. The PC industry experienced very unusual ups and downs over the past 11 years. After the extraordinary growth period between 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, the market has clearly begun a downward trend which will continue until the beginning of 2024, say experts of Gartner.

India panel recommends digital competition act
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has had strained relations with many large technology companies, and New Delhi has been tightening the regulation of firms such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. These tech giants are facing scrutiny from the country's competition watchdog, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), over alleged abuse of the application market.
The Committee recommend that the government should consider and introduce a digital competition act to ensure a fair, transparent and contestable digital ecosystem, which will be a boon not only for our country and its nascent start-up economy but also for the entire world," the panel said in a report submitted in India's lower house of parliament.
The panel recommended the identification of top tech players as systemically important digital intermediaries to counter monopoly and warned they "must not favour its own offers over the offers of its competitors" when acting as mediators to supply and sales markets.
In India, Amazon and rival Flipkart are facing accusations of anti-competitive practices, such as promoting preferred sellers on websites and giving priority to listings by some sellers.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance headed by Jayant Sinha has in its latest Big Tech report come up with a slew of recommendations on digital markets, including the introduction of a Digital Competition Act to ensure a fair, transparent and contestable digital ecosystem; identification of Systemically Important Digital Intermediaries (SIDI) and adoption of definitions to ‘ex-ante’ regulate their behaviour and framing of regulatory provisions to ensure that ‘news publishers’ are able to establish contracts with SIDIs in a fair and transparent process.

Recruitment agency Michael Page predicted that India is likely to witness an 86% employee attrition for 2022. This survey also suggested that in India, an estimated amount of 60% employees were ready to take up a lower salary to achieve a better work-life balance.
“With the clear majority saying a significant talent migration event is upon us in the next few months, we must be ready for it to increase,” the report stated. Notably, the survey had also suggested that the percentage of employees planning to quit their current jobs was the maximum in India, followed by Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia.
A report from the Financial Times cites research by AuthBrodge states that around 8 to 9 percent of IT employees in India are engaged in moonlighting. Potential risks of ‘Buy Now Pay Later’
New research by financial advice service OpenMoney finds almost 57% of adults aged 18 to 50 have now used buy now, pay later schemes, up from 49% last year. The largest rise in usage has been among 45 to 50-year-olds, where 16% growth in the last year makes it the age group most likely to choose the payment method, with 58% having done so compared to 56% of those aged 18 to 24 - contradicting the belief that it is largely a tool for youngsters. The survey, among 2,000 UK adults found that the most frequently bought items using BNPL are laptops, phones and other tech items, followed by clothes and holidays. 41% of respondents said they use it because they can’t afford to pay for an item in one go, double the number who feel it makes financial sense to spread the cost. Among 45 to 50-year-olds, those who use BNPL because they can’t afford an item upfront increased by 20% last year. Concerningly, those struggling to pay off their BNPL debts has also risen, from 38% last year to 43% this year and one in three users have turned to friends and family for help with repayments - an increase of 10% on 2020 figures - while seven percent took out a loan and five percent used a credit card to pay back the money.
Buy now pay later services are a form of payment where consumers make purchases and pay them off over a period of time in several installments, often interest-free. While BNPL is typically interest-free, some providers charge high late payment fees. Taking stock of the growing numbers and scale of recent cyberattacks, a global survey ‘The State of Ransomware 2021’ conducted by cybersecurity firm Sophos, states that the total cost of recovery from a ransomware attack has more than doubled in a year, increasing from 761,106 dollars in 2020 to 1.85 million dollars in 2021 globally. In comparison, the survey found that in India, the approximate recovery cost from the impact of a ransomware attack tripled in the last year, up from 1.1 million dollars in 2020, to 3.38 million dollars in 2021. A global threat report says, cyberattacks top the list of human-caused risks globally, and research has predicted that cybercrime may cause damages worth 7 trillion dollars by the end of this year.
Facing the daunting prospects of major financial fallout from a cyberattack, CXOs around the world have turned to cyber insurance. Several companies have opted for cyber insurance to seek protection against huge financial losses. On the flipside, several hacking groups are now seeing this as a lucrative opportunity to launch cyberattacks against organizations that are backed by insurance companies. In fact, these groups brazenly display details about the company’s cyber insurance cover page and demand the ransom to be paid up since they are insured. This was a race against time. Corona was killing people. The previous vaccine had taken long years of research. Will covaxin work? Will it be safe? Were the foremost questions in everyone’s mind. With the help of India’s virologists, they shortened the testing phase. They gave the vaccine to volunteers and in 28 days - their blood samples were taken. It was tested in a high biosafety lab with the deadly virus. If the vaccine had worked, the antibodies in the blood sample, would neutralise the virus and there won’t be any growth. To their ecstasy, the vaccine worked brilliantly. At long last, he had developed a vaccine that was made in India, but for the world. Covaxin was born.
