माना जाता हे की उज्जैन स्थित हरसिद्धि मंदिर सबसे प्राचीन है। उज्जैन की रक्षा के लिए आस-पास देवियों का पहरा है, उनमें से एक हरसिद्धि देवी भी हैं। कहते हैं कि यह मंदिर वहां स्थित है जहां सती के शरीर का अंश अर्थात हाथ की कोहनी आकर गिर गई थी। अत: इस स्थल को भी शक्तिपीठ के अंतर्गत माना जाता है।
इस देवी मंदिर का पुराणों में भी वर्णन मिलता है। कहा जाता है कि माता का यह मंदिर सम्राट विक्रमादित्य की तपोभूमि है। मंदिर के पीछे एक कोने में कुछ 'सिर' सिन्दूर चढ़े हुए रखे हैं। ये 'विक्रमादित्य के सिर' बतलाए जाते हैं। ऐसा माना जाता है कि महान सम्राट विक्रमादित्य ने देवी को प्रसन्न करने के लिए प्रत्येक 12वें वर्ष में अपने हाथों से अपने मस्तक की बलि दे दी थी। उन्होंने ऐसा 11 बार किया लेकिन हर बार सिर वापस आ जाता था। 12वीं बार सिर नहीं आया तो समझा गया कि उनका शासन संपूर्ण हो गया। हालांकि उन्होंने 135 वर्ष शासन किया था।
हरसिद्धि मंदिर की चारदीवारी के अंदर 4 प्रवेशद्वार हैं। मंदिर का मुख्य द्वार पूर्व दिशा की ओर है। द्वार पर सुंदर बंगले बने हुए हैं। बंगले के निकट दक्षिण-पूर्व के कोण में एक बावड़ी बनी हुई है जिसके अंदर एक स्तंभ है। यहां श्रीयंत्र बना हुआ स्थान है। इसी स्थान के पीछे भगवती अन्नपूर्णा की सुंदर प्रतिमा विराजित है। मंदिर के पूर्व द्वार से लगा हुआ सप्तसागर रुद्रसागर) तालाब है जिसे रुद्रासागर भी कहते हैं। रुद्रसागर तालाब के सुरम्य तट पर चारों ओर मजबूत प्रस्तर दीवारों के बीच यह सुंदर मंदिर बना हुआ है। मंदिर के ठीक सामने दो बड़े दीप-स्तंभ खड़े हुए हैं। प्रतिवर्ष नवरात्र के दिनों में 5 दिन तक इन पर दीप मालाएं लगाई जाती हैं। मंदिर के पीछे अगस्तेश्वर का प्राचीन सिद्ध स्थान है जो महाकालेश्वर के भक्त हैं। मंदिर का सिंहस्थ 2004 के समय पुन: जीर्णोद्धार किया गया था
मंदिर के संबंध में पौराणिक कथा हे कहते हैं कि चण्ड और मुण्ड नामक दो दैत्यों ने अपना आतंक मचा रखा था। एक बार दोनों ने कैलाश पर कब्जा करने की योजना बनाई और वे दोनों वहां पहुंच गए। उस दौरान माता पार्वती और भगवान शंकर द्यूत-क्रीड़ा में निरत थे। दोनों जबरन अंदर प्रवेश करने लगे, तो द्वार पर ही शिव के नंदीगण ने उन्हें रोका दिया। दोनों दैत्यों ने नंदीगण कोಇಂದ SR DARSHAN| 241 ವೀಕ್ಷಣೆ
