Why did India ban import of laptops?
The government on Thursday restricted the import of laptops, tablets and computers with immediate effect for security reasons and to promote domestic manufacturing. Laptops and tablets account for a fraction of India’s annual import of electronics of more than $60 billion.
The ban of import of Laptops, tablets and computers will add another layer of incentive for local manufacturing to the existing incentives worth $2 billion assured under the Productivity-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. India is targeting annual production worth $300 billion by 2026 and the restrictions on unlimited imports will compel companies like Dell, Acer, Samsung, LG Electronics, Apple, Lenovo and HP to enhance their assembling or manufacturing facilities in India.

Overuse of gadgets can make you age faster
An animal model study published in the journal “Frontiers in Aging” has unequivocally shown that humans age faster or are affected by blue light emitted from gadgets like smartphones and laptops. It has been found that the excessive use of these devices affects our eyesight and overall health rapidly.
Excessive exposure to blue light from everyday devices, like TVs, laptops and smartphones, harmful events occur in various cells in our body. It has been found to affect everything from skin and fat cells to sensory neurons. Strangely enough, researchers have made this discovery using flies.
It was found that chemicals that are essential for cells to function correctly -- are altered in fruit flies exposed to blue light.
The Researcher finds that the Flies exposed to blue light have been found to rapidly ‘turn on’ stress-protection genes, in contrast to flies kept in constant darkness for long periods of time.
To understand why this causes the flies to age faster, the scientists compared the levels of metabolites in flies exposed to blue light for two weeks to those in complete darkness.
Blue light exposure caused significant differences in the levels of metabolites measured by the researchers in the cells of fly heads. In particular, they found that the levels of the metabolite succinate were increased, but glutamate levels were lowered.
The changes recorded by the researchers suggest that the cells are operating at a suboptimal level, and this may cause their premature death, and further, explain their previous findings that blue light accelerates aging.

It is high time for India to introduce its own programming language

Modern India has had a strong focus on science and technology, realising that it is a key element for economic growth and positioned as one of the top five nations in the field for space exploration. The growth of the telecommunication and computer industry is another example of pure science research application. Having said that, it is high time for India to create new programming languages.

Usually made of silicon, they are used to power a wide range of devices - cars, laptops, smartphones, household appliances and gaming consoles. These semiconductors perform a host of functions such as powering displays and transferring data. So, a supply crunch has a consequent impact on sales of cars, fridges, laptops, TVs and other electronic devices. In India, the number of investors in cryptocurrencies has rapidly grown over the past year, and is now distorting how semiconductors are used. Global leaders and executives at multinational corporations are worried about the global shortage of semiconductors which has hit manufacturing and sales in numerous countries and no early solution is in sight. The unforeseen situation is not expected to improve anytime soon, and supply constraints could potentially continue into 2023. Though companies are on a war footing to ramp up production, the problem will likely worsen before reaching a resolution. Intel's chief executive, Pat Gelsinger, recently warned that the worst is yet to come. The surge in sales for electronic devices during the pandemic created a huge demand for semiconductors. But COVID-19 is not the only factor behind the shortage. The chip shortage has now become a talking point not just between companies and governments, but also between leaders of countries. Western countries have expressed a need to shift manufacturing within their countries and become self-reliant.
Another key reason is the tense relationship between the United States and China is also a factor, since many US companies do business with Chinese companies. The attrition rate poses a challenge to the industry due to “exploding” demand for digital talent caused by a surge in digitisation in the wake of the pandemic. Recent news on India’s leading IT services company Infosys has the plans to meet its demand by expanding its hiring program of college graduates for FY22. The report states, 37,000 Infosys Employees Resigned in the last 12 months! 35,000 freshers will be hired by Infosys now. Voluntary attrition rate in the June quarter was 13.9%, a rise from the 10.9% observed in the March quarter. If we go by the figures, this means that over 37,000 employees have left Infosys in the last year. In response to increase in attrition rates, the firm has rolled out employee engagement initiatives such as career acceleration opportunities, compensation reviews, and learning & development interventions.
At the same time, Wipro also commented on the attrition rate in the industry, while attrition is a perennial concern, this time around the industry is witnessing “an unprecedented war for talent.” Talent retention is even more critical now since the cost to replace employees with certain competencies and experience between 5-10 years can go as high as 100%. Wipro has also announced its plans to hire 30,000 freshers in FY22. At the same time, TCS will recruit over 40,000 freshers directly from campuses. Its workforce comprises 5 lakh employees and had hired 40,000 freshers last year as well. The country’s largest IT service provider reported an attrition rate of 8.6% in Q1 of FY2022. The Microsoft 2021 Work Trend Index showed 41% of the global workforce are considering resigning this year - a near doubling of job-switching intent on the two years before the pandemic. Now it’s seen that companies are willing to pay a bit more.

The India data centre market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8% over the forecast period 2021 to 2026. The rapid adoption of cloud-based business operations has encouraged businesses to acquire data management capacities to handle huge volumes of data that are being generated. Increased proliferation of online shopping due to the availability of user-friendly interfaces, high-speed internet, and smart devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc. is expected to drive the market in the future. India’s data centre sector is probably one of the fastest-growing data centre markets in the world, and with the growing adoption of digital models across a wide range of businesses can lead to surge the demand for the data centres in India.
Given India’s rich network connectivity, cost advantage, availability of skilled labour, low climate risk and strong data protection laws, India is well-positioned to serve as a regional data centre hub in Asia-Pacific and is likely to attract significant investments. A report says, Data centres capacity in Mumbai, the country’s commercial capital, is likely to grow 2.65 times to 529 MW by 2023, said a JLL India report. The city is expected to add 330 MW in the next two years and Navi Mumbai is expected to account for 83% of these additions in the Mumbai region. India is increasingly seeing a big opportunity in edge data centres. Going forward, we will witness there are various Tier-II cities in the country to come out with edge data centres, will be located closer to the end-users and are on the edge of the network.

Today, IT leaders sit at the nexus of their company’s transformation and innovation efforts – providing a unique horizontal view and influence across the organization. 96% of Indian CIOs have more influence on leadership decisions. According to the survey, up to 50% of Indian CIOs singled out hybrid and public cloud as the most likely area for increased investment in 2021. Over the past year, CIOs have been able to further improve digital customer experiences, but these experiences have also become more complex. Moving forward, CIOs need to think about the integrated technology tools and infrastructure frameworks necessary to help their organizations effectively and securely capture customer data, convert that data into valuable insights, and utilize those insights to shape a personalized and enhanced customer experience.
CIOs first need to embrace the need for change. CIOs now need to deliver IT in ways that suit their users, empowering them for new ways of working, engagement and collaboration. CIO’s need to align all new technologies with their organizations’ overall business strategies, budgets and needs for security. With more teams directly involved in shaping the customer experience, CIOs regularly partner with their peers to take their digital experiences from concept to reality. Indeed, IT leaders regularly collaborate with two or more C-level colleagues on customer experience management initiatives. In India, CIOs most regularly partner with their organization’s CTO followed by the CMO. Nearly 60% of CIOs now meet with their CMO counterparts on a daily or weekly basis, forming a true power duo.

लिथियम एक ऐसा खनिज यानी मिनरल है जिसकी डिमांड दुनिया भर में बहुत ज्यादा बढ़ गई है। भारत भी दूसरे देशों से बड़ी मात्रा में लिथियम का आयात करवाता है। अब तक यह खनिज सिर्फ ऑस्ट्रेलिया, अर्जेंटीना, चिली और चीन में ही बड़ी मात्रा में उपलब्ध था। लेकिन भारतीय भूवैज्ञानिक सर्वेक्षण यानी Geological Survey of India ने एक ऐसा काम कर दिया है जिससे देश को एक बड़ी समस्या का समाधान मिलने वाला है। GSI की कोशिशों की वजह से खनिज संपदा से भरपूर जम्मू कश्मीर में बेशकीमती और महत्वपूर्ण धातु लिथियम का भंडार मिला है। Geological Survey of India ने देश की पहली लिथियम से भरपूर साइट की पहचान जम्मू कश्मीर के रियासी जिले के सलाल-हैमाना क्षेत्र में की है। GSI ने बताया कि यह लिथियम भंडार की मात्रा लगभग 5.9 मिलियन टन यानी 59 लाख टन के करीब है। भारत में बड़े पैमाने पर लिथियम का आयात ऑस्ट्रेलिया और अर्जेंटीना से किया जाता है। जम्मू कश्मीर में बड़ी मात्रा में मौजूद लिथियम खनिज से भारत की लिथियम निर्भरता दूसरे देशों पर से कम होगी।
