80 Year Old Pankajakshiamma Complaints Against Temple Authorities: Kollam Temple
Kollam collector had denied permission to the Puttingal Devi temple authorities to conduct the fireworks display, based on the complaint of 80-year-old Pankajakshiamma, who stays very close to the Temple in Kollam, Kerala. Pankajakshi Amma's house, located about 50 metres from the tragedy site, was damaged too in the mishap. A copy given to district police officials stated they should watch whether the temple authorities were violating the law and submit a report in case of any violation. The order was issued on April 8.At least 100 people were killed and 383 injured in the major fire at around 3.30 AM that engulfed the 100-year-old Puttingal Devi Temple complex packed with thousands of people near Kollum during a display of fireworks held by the temple management despite the authorities denying permission for it. The mishap occurred as sparks of the fireworks during the festivities fell on the store room 'Kambapura' where crackers were stored, leading to many explosions which were heard over a radius of one kilometre. The temple complex is around 70 kms from state capital Thiruvananthapuram.

Explosion Tremor Felt at Adjoining Building of Kollam Temple
At around 3.30 AM, there was a massive explosion followed by tremors which were felt even a kilometre away from the 100-year-old Puttingal Devi temple near Kollam as a massive fire tragedy struck there. The mishap due to the display of fireworks occurred on the last day of the seven-day 'Meena Bharani' festivities. Thousands of people had gathered at the temple precincts to witness the fireworks display underway since midnight when the blaze erupted at around 3.30 AM. The mishap occurred as sparks of the fireworks fell on the store room 'Kambapura' and the fire crackers kept there exploded with a deafening noise.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced Rs two lakh each as compensation for the next of the kin of the dead in Kollam temple fire in which more than 80 people have been killed. He also announced Rs 50,000 each for the injured in the tragedy that occurred early this morning in Puttingal Devi Temple near Kollam town.

Hours after the fire tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today visited the Puttingal Devi Temple premises near Kollam and took stock of the situation arising out of the mishap that claimed 100 lives and left over 383 injured. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and state Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala took the Prime minister around the temple precincts and briefed him on the incident. Modi went around the accident site littered with debris of the two buildings, including the 'Kambapura', storehouse where the crackers and fireworks display materials had been stocked, that were completely razed to the ground in the explosion.
