Democratisation of e-commerce is the need of the hour
The proposed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is incorporated as a private non-profit (Section-8) company to establish the public digital infrastructure needed to expand access to India’s e-commerce ecosystem – and is expected to bring a US$200 billion opportunity by 2027. The Indian government hopes it will democratize the country’s online commerce for all buyers and sellers, irrespective of their size, so that millions of small retailers and mom-and-pop (kirana) stores get an equal opportunity. India is keen to level the playing field for e-commerce operators and widen the digital market access for millions of small businesses and traders in the country. The duopoly of Amazon and Walmart-Flipkart will end. This could be ecommerce’s UPI moment. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become a symbol of India’s ability to roll out world-class solutions in digital technology. In 2021-22, 46 billion transactions valued at Rs 84 lakh crore were made on UPI. A pilot phase of the ONDC protocol was recently launched in five cities, in the country, now it is closely involved in the development of ONDC, along with a team of technocrats and government officers, Nilekani has drawn praise for the initiative from diverse quarters, including Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra and Mahindra. After UPI (Unified Payment Interface), it is said to be another game changing idea to democratise commerce - ONDC to select consumers, sellers and logistics providers. The project is massive and it is expected to bring a world of choice, convenience and transparency.
India's long-term consumption and retail growth drivers are expected to provide a strong foundation for future growth. There was a need for building cost-efficient and technology-enabled operations and partnerships would be key to success in the days to come. Cloud computing is changing the world and our future. Cloud is estimated to shape the digital infrastructure of the world, which would only expand from its present space with the growth of populations. With the help of Cloud computing, every AI powered device would act ten times faster with relative ease. Cloud computing is large-scale network computing. It runs a cloud-based application software on servers scattered throughout the internet. As companies move much faster on their digital transformation journey, companies are looking for ways to increase agility, business continuity, profitability and scalability. Cloud computing technology will be at the heart of every strategy to attain these aims in the new normal. Cloud computing provides a variety of services. Platform-as-a-service (PaaS), software-as-a-service (SaaS) and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) are the leading ones. These services are critical to attaining business objectives. Many studies and assessments have indicated that cloud computing will be a dominant technology soon, with SaaS solutions accounting for over 60% of the workload.
Today, data generation is at an all-time high, and it’s just getting higher. It’s difficult to keep such big amounts of data safely. Most businesses continue to keep business and customer data in physical data centers. Gati Shakti National Master Plan
With an aim to develop infrastructure in the country, #PrimeMinisterNarendraModi launched a Rs.100 trillion Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity which will reduce the logistic costs and boost the economy. Gati Shakti targets to cut logistic costs, increase cargo handling capacity and reduce the turnaround time. The projects will be designed and executed with a common vision and will incorporate the infrastructure schemes of various ministries and state governments such as the Bharatmala road project, Sagarmala waterways plan, ports and the UDAN scheme. As per DIPA, the National Master Plan is significant for the telecom sector on various fronts such as a unified portal for approvals of infrastructure projects, cross-sector collaboration with utilities (water, gas, electricity, etc.) for sharing infrastructure, including common ducts, uniform policy in all states/UTs and central ministries/departments for Right of Way (RoW) permissions, availability of land/properties for deploying infrastructure, and sharing of infrastructure with other utilities by enhancing the scope of telecom infrastructure providers.
The project is expected to connect economic zones such as textile clusters, pharmaceutical clusters, defence corridors, electronic parks, industrial corridors, fishing clusters, and agri zones will be improved to make Indian businesses more competitive. It will also leverage technology, including spatial planning tools with satellite imagery. Experts say, if the multiplier effect of infrastructure investments on gross domestic product (GDP) is to be maximized within a short time frame, it is critical that specific infrastructure projects which form part of critical trade routes, both internal and external, be prioritized. With the newly launched e-Rupi #digitalpayments platform, India has now taken its first step towards having its own digital currency. India’s consumer #digitaleconomy, which was pegged at $85-90 billion in calendar year 2020, is expected to become a $800 billion market by 2030. Today, over 90 per cent of the orders fulfilled by online commerce get done by the new age logistics, an industry which has come up only in the last one decade and has solved the challenges through technology and customer centric mindset. Digital payments are becoming quite ubiquitous in India. The government has now come up with a plan for leveraging the digital infrastructure so that there is ‘leak-proof delivery’ of its welfare schemes. Now e-Rupi can be comparable to a prepaid voucher that is redeemable at specific centres. What is even more special about it, is that one does not need any credit or debit card, mobile app or internet banking to use it.
Developed by #NPCI in collaboration with the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Health and Welfare and National Health Authority, e-Rupi seeks to connect beneficiaries and service providers digitally, making it a personal purpose-specific payments platform. The Indian economy has always been largely cash-dependent, while the government has been making efforts to digitise the economy, still much remains to be done. With this new platform, the government hopes to encourage as well as accelerate the adoption of digital payments and bring down the cash to GDP ratio. With more and more people overcoming their wariness about digital transactions, fintech, in turn, will be able to reach out to more consumers who had earlier been left out by the formal economy and financial services sector, especially in rural India.
