  • Humpback Whale Breaches on Top of Kayakers
Humpback Whale Breaches on Top of Kayakers

On our 08:00 am Sanctuary Cruises whale tour, just outside the harbor in Moss Landing, two kayakers on a tandam kayak were almost crushed to death by a massive, near full-size humpback whale. We stopped to see a large aggregation of humpbacks feeding and carrying on with random acts of hijinks. There were also a lot of kayakers right in the middle of it all. Humpbacks were coming up next to and in the middle of many kayakers. It was amusing. It's all fun and games until someone gets jumped on. The next thing we knew, this thing launched right on top of these two kayakers. That was heavy. The video was shot by Sanctuary Cruises passenger Larry Plants.

We were sent this video of a magnificent Humpback whale breaching the surface of the Bay of Fundy last Friday.

Sandy Seliga was vacationing from Toronto and had whale watching on her bucket list - we'd say she can safely check that item off after a sighting like this!!

Whales are a majestic part of the Bay of Fundy ecosystem. But these brilliant creatures are under stress from tanker traffic in the bay, which is poised to get a lot busier and riskier for whales with TransCanada's proposed Energy East Pipeline.

    World's Ugliest Animal - Blobfish

The ugliest animal in the world by official vote! The blobfish earns the world's ugliest animal award. Ugly creature indeed, the blobfish is always in the top 10 ugliest animal lists and usually it's number 1.

Everyone has been posting about this blobfish and it just happened to be voted the ugliest animal in the world today by the Ugly Animal Preservation Society.

It's scientific name is Psychrolutes Marcidus

Discovered near Australia, The blob-fish lives so deep within the ocean that it's flesh is like jelly because the water pressure is over 30 times higher than sea level. Just think of it like a very soft foot long tadpole.

This fish is almost muscle-less as it just kinda floats just above the ocean floor hoping food just happens to wander near it's mouth. It has seemed to become a part of recent pop culture with all kinds of funny pictures and creations all over the internet.

Unfortunately like a lot rare animals, researchers are predicting that this fish could become endangered soon as they keep getting caught and dying in bottom trawling nets.

So do you guys agree this is the ugliest animal in the world or do you think there is something uglier?

California Sheephead - Bizarre Animal)

California Sheephead Wrasse: Scuba Diving Anacapa Island, Channel Islands National Park.

Diving at a depth of about only 25 feet, we see a Kelp Forest (00:37) which we are guided into by a Kelp Bass (Paralabrax clathratus; 00:55). We meet our first California sheephead (01:16) whose mixed coloration suggest that it may be a young female transforming into an adult male. A mature adult male (01:21) and adult female (01:23) appear together in frame, and then a curious male inspects a dead sea urchin being held by a diver (01:38). Finally, an adult male goes for a snack in the form of a snail (02:33), but the snail luckily avoids being eaten.

This video featuring the California sheephead wrasse (Semicossyphus pulcher) is a compilation from videos taken while scuba diving during the month of August in 2009, 2010, and 2011. The dive sites were in the vicinity of Anacapa Island in the Channel Islands National Park of Ventura County, California.

  • Goblin Shark, Alien of the Deep
Goblin Shark, Alien of the Deep

What makes the rarely seen Goblin Shark so unusual is its bizarre 'alien-like' jaw mechanism. As its jaws close, two ligaments are stretched. The act of opening the mouth releases the tension on the ligaments resulting in the jaws being thrust forward.

One of the other weird-looking things about this shark is its long flattened snout, the lower side of which is covered with pores. These are the openings to the 'ampullae of Lorenzini', a sensory system that allows the electroreception of prey. Food items are believed to include fishes, octopuses, squids, shrimps and crabs. Sadly the gut of 'our fish' was empty, so we can't describe its last meal.

The newly acquired specimen is a juvenile male of 1.26 m in length. It was caught by a commercial fisher off Eden in water several hundred metres deep.

LiveLeak - Beachgoers deliver 3 baby Sharks from dead Mother Video

Watch A family beach day for the photographer of this amazing footage turned into one of the most memorable events ever when they came across a dead pregnant shark and helped 3 young pups take their first swim.
The lady filming the episode is said to have noticed movement in the dead shark that lay ashore. Once they established that the shark was in fact pregnant, the man in the footage start cutting
open the dead shark to release not one, but three live sharks from her belly.

Baby sharks, called shark pups, are born with a full set of teeth, which might explain the shark rescuer's hesitation to handle them.

Although'hatching' within their mother and staying inside them for up to two years, sharks pups quickly swim away after being born to prevent being eaten by their mothers.

Hence, it's safe to say the sharks have no disadvantage because of their beach birth as they are fully independent once born.

Don't go in the Water - Why we love Shark Week 2012

Shark Week 2012: Schedule and Preview:

On Sunday, The Discovery Channel began its annual week-long Shark Week, a series of feature television programs which is completely devoted to the ocean's most misunderstood creatures: sharks. The series first aired on July 17, 1988, and has become a pop meme sensation every year since, now showing in over 72 countries across the world.

The week was developed to help Americans have a greater appreciation and respect for sharks, and it has developed an almost cult-like following over the past decade. Shark Week has inspired a bevy of memes, Stephen Colbert called it the second holiest annual holiday (next to the week after Christmas), Tracy Morgan on 30 Rock advised a colleague to "Live every week like it's Shark Week," and now the famed bakery Georgetown Cupcake in Washington, DC is selling Shark Week cupcakes (see here).

How did a Discovery Channel show about sharks become just so popular? The Atlantic conducted a great interview with executive producer Brooke Runnette, which reveals some of the backstory of the popular show (which drew in 30 million viewers last year). Here are some revelations:

    1) It all started on a cocktail napkin.

According to Runnette, the idea for the Discovery program started on a cocktail napkin. "The idea was definitely scribbled down on the back of a cocktail napkin," she said. Apparently, executives John

  • Shark Week Special Edition: Diving With Sharks in Las Vegas Redux
Shark Week Special Edition: Diving With Sharks in Las Vegas Redux

    Du-du, du-du, du-du, du-du, DU-DU, DU-DU!

It’s that time of year: Shark Week on the Discovery Channel! And not just any Shark Week, but a special 25th Anniversary edition. It’s hard to believe it’s been a quarter of a century since one of the most popular institutions on cable debuted, and as a big shark fan, I’ve tuned in most years. Kudos to you, Discovery!

Each year Shark Week mixes all-new programming with repeats from previous years. It makes sense, it’s good business, and if you haven’t seen it before, it’s new to you. So in honor of Shark Week, I’m doing the same thing with this post.

One year ago I wrote about the little-known opportunity to dive with sharks in Las Vegas, at the Shark Reef aquarium in the Mandalay Bay resort. Lots of you read it, but if you did not, here’s the scoop:
While Shark Week shows lots of people going to places like South Africa and the Bahamas to dive with sharks, spending thousands of dollars and days or weeks in the process, very few people know that you can have a really awesome shark diving experience right on the Las Vegas Strip – and it’s far cheaper, easier and more accessible. You could also make a good argument it is more environmentally responsible. And you get to combine this fantastic experience with being in Vegas – luxe accommodations, 5-star dining, shows, golf, whatever suits your fancy.
You also get more sharks: The tank is home to 15 shark species, from the offbeat

Whale shark sucks fish out of hole in fishing net - Conservation International (CI)

In Indonesia's Cendrawasih Bay, whale sharks often congregate around bagan (lift net) fishing platforms to eat the small silverside baitfish that the fishers are targeting. Sometimes the sharks swim right into the nets and become entangled. They have also learned how to "suck" the fish out of holes in the nets.
