Congress President and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone for a Rs 2,938-crore drinking water supply project at Jayal in Nagaur district of Rajasthan on Thursday. This drinking water project would benefit more than 23 lakh people from nine towns and about 900 villages of Nagaur district. "The UPA Government at the Centre, under the leadership of Dr. Manmohan Singh, has done tremendous works for the development of the country and welfare of the people, especially the poor. The central government introduced various welfare schemes aiming at the social and economic welfare of the people and we sent huge funds under these schemes to every state without any discrimination" said Sonia Gandhi.

"Our policies have empowered the poor, adivasis, underprivileged, tribals, minorities and women. We took measures to increase the supporting price for the crops which helped farmers in a big way and as a result the country witnessed record agricultural production" said Sonia Gandhi.
    "We are committed to ensure a bright future of the youth in our country and have taken various steps in this direction. The land mark legislation to guarantee jobs for the poor in the villages, free education for the children upto 14 years, mid-day meal scheme for the school children, facility to avail loan at a lower interest rate for the women through Self Help Groups (SHG) for women, drinking water facilities, electricity in villages under Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification scheme, various health care schemes to ensure adequate medical facilities for the poor are some of the achievements of the Congress-led UPA Government at the centre. I am also confident that lots of people are reaping benefits of these schemes across the country" added the Congress President.

As we hold the responsibility as a Government at the Centre, the state government also has some responsibility. I want to ask the BJP government here why have not the government increase the limit of LPG cylinders to a family from 6 to 9. This is what our Congress government has done in the states ruled by us. Why has the Karnataka Government not reduced the VAT on diesel, just like our Congress led governments have done? So it is very easy to criticize others but what about you (the state government), what are you doing to reduce the hardships of your people? It is your (state government’s) responsibility as much as ours” said Sonia Gandhi.
