The news of the birth of a son to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge is greeted across the globe. The new prince, whose name has not yet been made public, was born at 4.24pm on Monday in the private wing of a London hospital. He is third in line to the British throne.

    "The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth," the statement added. "The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news."
    Mother and son are both doing well, the palace said, and will remain in the hospital overnight.

    "We could not be happier," Prince William said via a palace spokesperson. He will be spending the night at the hospital with his wife and new baby.

    A palace source tells CBS News that William was with the duchess throughout her labor, and called the queen, Prince Charles, Prince Harry and the Middletons with the news.

    In a statement, Charles said he and wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, are "overjoyed" by the baby's birth.

    The son of Prince William and Middleton weighed 8lbs 6oz (3.6kg). He was delivered at 4.24pm in the maternity wing of St Mary's hospital, London, by natural birth. The Duke of Cambridge was at the bedside.

    "We could not be happier," William said in a statement. A Buckingham palace spokesman said the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are "delighted at the news". The prime minister, David Cameron, predicted William and Kate will "make wonderful parents".

    Hundreds gathered outside the hospital to celebrate the news. The crowd sang: "Happy birthday dear royal baby," in absence of a name. Later several hundred people were outside Buckingham Palace, where an ornate easel announced the birth.

    The birth of the royal baby had been followed around the world. In America rolling news channels devoted their coverage to the birth, while Australia prime minister Kevin Rudd sent his country's "warmest regards" to the new family.
