Miss Kansas Is An Army Sergeant Who Will Be The First Miss America Contestant To Expose Her Tattoos

This Sunday's Miss America pageant will be a little different from past years.
For the first time in history, a contestant will expose her tattoos during the bikini portion of the competition.

Theresa Vail looks the beauty pageant queen part, but is different than one would expect.

That bold contestant is Miss Kansas, Sgt. Theresa Vail, who also happens to be the second contestant in the military to compete in Miss America.

Vail, 23, will be breaking a long-standing taboo with her two giant tattoos - the insignia for the U.S. Army Dental Corps on her left shoulder and the Serenity Prayer running down her right side.

"Why am I choosing to bear my tattoos? My whole platform is empowering women to overcome stereotypes and break barriers," the Miss America hopeful explains to People magazine. "What a hypocrite I would be if I covered my ink. How can I tell other women to be fearless and true to themselves if I can't do the same?"

Much of Vail's confidence comes from being an expert M16 marksman, a skydiver, a boxer, a mechanic, fluent Chinese speaker, and a bow hunter who can skin a deer and apparently cooks a mean squirrel stew - skills not usually associated with beauty queens.

    PUNE: Ex-Sergeant (Air Force) Raghubir Singh will soon be attempting to get in the Guinness Book of World Records for training himself to drive with one leg.

    Singh lost one of his legs in a road accident back in 1979. However, even after the gruesome accident, he didn’t lose hope and continued to follow his passions, including the one for driving. He uses a prosthetic leg while walking, and has successfully trained himself to drive a car with only one leg.

    “Whether it’s a crowded street or any kind of road, I can drive a non-modified car anywhere with just one leg. Recently, I travelled from Ambala to Pune, a distance of around 1,740 km, in 33 hours 20 minutes. On Saturday morning, I will be leaving from Pune to Goa and back non-stop and will cover this journey of around 900 km in about 18 hours,” Singh said.

    While Singh has received the letter from the Guinness Book of World Records, the route and distance for the same are yet to be determined.

    “The aim behind this is to encourage more people like me, especially the former Army men, to follow their passion even after disability. I want them not to lose heart after any such incident in their lives,” Singh added.

    When you think of a Miss America contestant, a military sergeant and archery expert may not be the first woman who comes to mind.

    Theresa Vail is here to change all that. "If there is one thing that competing has taught me, it’s that you need to be unapologetically yourself and not let others dictate how you feel," she wrote in a May 25 post on her personal blog.

    Vail, who is competing as Miss Kansas, is a member of the Kansas Army National Guard’s Medical Detachment. She's also a skydiver, boxer and advocate for young girls.

    Here are five things you should know about her.

    1. She won't be covering up her tattoos during the competition. Vail has tattoos of the Serenity Prayer and a military medical insignia, and she has decided to display them proudly during the swimsuit round. In an August 22 blog post, Vail wrote:
    Why am I choosing to bear my tattoos? Reference A; my platform! Empowering women to OVERCOME stereotypes and break barriers. What a hypocrite I would be if I covered the ink. With my platform, how could I tell other women to be fearless and be true to themselves if I can’t do the same?... I am who I am, tattoos and all.

    2. She used to race motorcycles, and only stopped after breaking all the fingers in her right hand. She wants to become a dentist, which requires flexible fingers.
