In some countries and at some points in history, what news media and the public have considered "newsworthy" has met different definitions, such as the notion of news values. Tropical Storm Karen churns toward Gulf Coast
Tropical Storm Karen was poised to become the first named storm to hit the U.S. during what had been a relatively quiet hurricane season.
Karen was forecast to lash the northern Gulf Coast over the weekend as a weak hurricane or tropical storm. A hurricane watch was in effect from Grand Isle, La., to west of Destin, Fla. A tropical storm warning was issued for the Louisiana coast from Grand Isle to the mouth of the Pearl River, including the New Orleans area.
From a tiny, vulnerable island off the Louisiana coast to the beaches of the Florida Panhandle, Gulf Coast residents prepared Thursday for a possible hit from the storm.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami said early Friday that Karen was about 295 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River and moving northwest at 10 mph..
The storm's maximum sustained winds decreased slightly to 60 mph, with the Hurricane Center saying little change in strength was expected Friday. But forecasters said some strengthening was possible Saturday, when the storm's center would be near the coast.
In Alabama, safety workers Thursday hoisted double red flags at Gulf Shores because of treacherous rip currents ahead of the storm.
In Mississippi, Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency, urging residents to prepare. State Emergency Management Agency Director Robert Latham said local schools will decide whether to play football gamesਦੁਆਰਾ ajay kumar | 355 ਵਿਚਾਰ
Slightly weaker Tropical Storm Dorian path aims toward Bahamas
Tropical Storm Dorian, 5 a.m. Friday advisory
OUTLOOK: Tropical Storm Dorian is projected to arrive near the southern Bahamas on Tuesday. Dorian's maximum sustained winds reached 60 mph on Thursday but have since dropped by 10 mph. The projected path continues to aim toward the Bahamas, Cuba or Florida.
WHAT FLORIDA CAN EXPECT: It's too early to say whether Florida will be affected.
PARTICULARS: Dorian is expected to continue experiencing moderate shear and dry air, storm-weakening factors, during the next 2 to 4 days.
For now, the system is projected to have maximum winds of about 50 mph on Tuesday.
Dorian currently is a compact storm, with tropical-storm-force winds extending 60 miles from its core.
LOCATION: 1,425 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands or some 2,500 miles southeast of South Florida.
STRENGTH: 50 mph sustained winds.
