Toronto mayor Rob Ford admits to council chamber he bought illegal drugs

Toronto's embattled mayor, Rob Ford, admitted in the city's council chamber on Wednesday that he has bought illegal drugs in the last two years. Speaking after Toronto City Council almost unanimously urged him to take a break from his duties, Ford said he could not change the past and would continue his efforts as mayor to save Toronto money. Asked if he had bought illegal drugs in the past two years, he replied somberly: "Yes, I have."

Last week, the scandal-hit mayor admitted that he smoked crack cocaine "while in a drunken stupor," and Wednesday's call from council came in its first meeting since that admission. An Ipsos-Reid poll conducted for several TV and radio stations and published on Wednesday showed that 76 per cent of Toronto voters believe Ford should step down or take leave of absence.     Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has apologized for using lewd language on live television in his denial of allegations made to police in recently released court documents.
    Ford said allegations of cocaine use and prostitution that came to light Wednesday, "pushed him over the edge."

    "I used unforgivable language and again I apologize," he said Thursday in a hastily called news conference.

    Ford's wife, Renata, who has remained out of the spotlight as the mayor's troubles have escalates, stood at his side as he spoke.

    Ford added he is receiving support "from a team of health care professionals" but refused to elaborate on that support.

    "I wish you to understand I am accepting responsibility for the challenges I face. I ask you to please, please respect my family's privacy," he added, before taking his wife through the throng of cameras and reporters to reach an elevator.

    When asked by CTV Toronto's Zuraidah Alman whether her husband should resign, Renata Ford responded no; that was what elections were for, she said.
