A 20-year-old cellist from Rhode Island won the Miss USA crown and will represent the United States in this year's Miss Universe pageant after voicing support for transgender beauty queens.
Olivia Culpo topped a field of 51 contestants on Sunday to take the title at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. She strutted across the stage in a lilac bikini and a purple evening gown adorned with a sparkly belt.

"We didn't know a thing about pageants," he said.
She won that contest in a rented $20 dress with a hole in it and then began working out, dieting, and studying current events on flashcards to compete for the Miss USA crown.

The newly crowned Miss Universe 2012, Miss USA Olivia Culpo, participated in her first photo-op just minutes after receiving the title, and it just so happened to be with our choice of Best Dressed for the night—Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' Giggy!
"As soon as she was crowned, the new Miss Universe wanted to get Giggy with it," the pooch's mama, Lisa Vanderpump, said.
With her new (and blingtastic) Diamond Nexus crown on her head and ear-to-ear smile, Culpo posed in front of the holiday decorated stage with her furry little friend, who wore a fitted tuxedo.

Culpo, 20, is from Cranston, Rhode Island, and plays cello. Her parents are musicians and she and her siblings all learned to play various instruments. She has performed with Yo-Yo Ma. She wants a career in film and television.
First runner up is Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon; second runner is Miss Venezuela Irene Sofia Esser Quintero; third runner up is Miss Australia Renae Ayris and the fourth runner up is Miss Brazil Gabriele Markus.
Before the announcement is made, Rancic thanks the judges for making a life-changing decision for the winner. She also thanks Donald Trump, who owns the pageant.
The national costume contest winner is Miss China. In order are Miss Mexico, Miss Netherlands, Miss Sri Lanka, Miss Brazil, Miss Nicaragua, Miss British Virgin Islands, Miss Panama, Miss Peru and Miss Indonesia.

Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island was named Miss USA on Sunday after saying it would be fair for transgendered contestants to win the pageant, giving her a crown that she will wear when representing the United States at the Miss Universe pageant later this year.
Culpo, 20, competed in the traditional swimsuit and evening gown competitions at the Las Vegas pageant, but also answered a question - tweeted in from an audience member - about an issue that earlier this year vexed the organizers of the Miss Universe pageant in Canada when a transgendered woman wanted to compete.
Culpo was asked if it was fair that a transgender woman would win Miss USA over a natural born woman, and she answered, “I do think that would be fair, but I can understand that people would be a little apprehensive to take that road.”
She went on to say that there are “so many people out there who have a need to change for a happier life. I do accept that because I believe it is a free country.”
The audience reaction seemed mixed initially but quickly turned to cheers and Culpo gave two thumbs ups.
Later, when the winner’s crown was placed on Culpo’s head, tears came to her eyes as she accepted the congratulations of fellow contestants and walked the stage as the new Miss USA in a flowing, purple evening gown that was among the few splashes of color in a competition that featured several white dress.

A 20-year-old beauty queen from Rhode Island was crowned the new Miss Universe on Wednesday, beating out 88 other women during a televised competition at the Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip.
Olivia Culpo took the crown from Leila Lopes of Angola after strutting in a purple and blue bikini and a red velvet gown.
In the final stages of the competition, she answered a question about her regrets by saying she wished she hadn't picked on her siblings.
Miss Philippines, Janine Tugonon, came in second, while Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero, placed third.
Contestants from 89 countries on six continents spent the past two weeks in Sin City, where they posed in hardhats at a hotel groundbreaking, took a painting lesson, and pranked hotel guests by hiding in their rooms.
The beauty queens took the stage in tight, pleated mini-dresses with glittering sequin bodices and sky high platform shoes, strutting to the hit "Live While We're Young," by English-Irish boy band One Direction.
Later in the two-hour show, they walked a stage decked with white Christmas trees and snow flurry effects, throwing off gauzy white wraps to show off tie-dye bikinis in purples, pinks and blues.
