പുരുഷന്മാരുടെ കുത്തകയായി കരുതപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഒരു കാലഘട്ടത്തില്‍ ഡല്‍ഹിയുടെ ഭരണം നിര്‍വ്വഹിച്ച ഡല്‍ഹി സുല്‍ത്താനേറ്റിലെ ഒരേ ഒരു വനിത. സുൽത്താനത്തിലെ ആദ്യ രാജവംശമായ മംലൂക്ക് രാജവംശത്തിലെ സുൽത്താൻ ഇൽത്തുമിഷിന്റെ പുത്രിയായിരുന്നു റസിയ. തന്‍റെ ആണ്‍മക്കളിലാരും തന്നെ ഡല്‍ഹി സുല്‍ത്താനേറ്റിന്‍റെ ഭരണചക്രം തിരിക്കാന്‍ യോഗ്യരല്ലെന്ന് വിലയിരുത്തിയ ഇല്‍ത്തുമിഷ് അന്നുവരെയുളള രീതീകള്‍ അന്പേ തെറ്റിച്ച് റസിയയെ തന്‍റെ അനന്തരവകാശിയായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. ഈ തീരുമാനം ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടാഞ്ഞ സഭയിലെ മതപണ്ഡിതര്‍ഇല്‍ത്തുമിഷിന്റെ മരണത്തോടെ മകന്‍ റുക്ന്‍~ഉദ്~ദിന്‍ ഫിറൂസിനെ സിംഹാസനത്തില്‍ അവരോധിച്ചു. എന്നാല്‍, കുത്തഴിഞ്ഞ ജീവിതം നയിച്ച ഫിറൂസിന് പകരം റസിയ ഭരണമേറ്റെടുത്തു. പുരുഷവേഷത്തില്‍ സാധാരണ സുല്‍ത്താന്മാര്‍ ഇരിക്കുന്ന തുറന്ന സഭയിലിരുന്നതാണ് റസിയ ഭരണകാര്യങ്ങള്‍ നിര്‍വ്വഹിച്ചത്. തന്നെ സുല്‍ത്താന റസിയ എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നത് ഒരിക്കലും ആ സ്ത്രീ രത്നം ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നില്ല. സുല്‍ത്താന എന്ന വാക്കിന് സുല്‍ത്താന്‍റെ ഭാര്യഎന്നാണ് അര്‍ത്ഥം. താന്‍ ആരുടെയും പത്നിയല്ലെന്നും ഡല്‍ഹിയുടെ ഭരണാധികാരിയാണെന്നും അവര്‍ വ്യക്തമാക്കി. അതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ ‘സുല്‍ത്താന്‍' എന്നു തന്നെ അഭിസംബോധന ചെയ്യണമെന്ന് അവര്‍ ആഹ്വാനം ചെയ്തു. നാലു വർഷക്കാലമേ റസിയക്ക് ഇന്ത്യ ഭരിക്കാൻ സാധിച്ചുള്ളു. ഉപജാപങ്ങളെത്തുടർന്ന് മറ്റൊരു സഹോദരനായ നാസിറുദ്ദീൻ സുൽത്താനായി. റസിയ ഭരണം തിരികെ പിടിക്കാന്‍ യുദ്ധം ചെയ്തെങ്കിലും പരാജയപ്പെട്ടു. പുരുഷ വേഷം ധരിച്ചായിരുന്നു അവർ യുദ്ധം ചെയ്തത്. യുദ്ധത്തിൽ പരാജയപ്പെട്ട റസിയക്കു ഓടി രക്ഷപെടേണ്ടി വന്നു. തുടര്‍ന്ന് ഡല്‍ഹിഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് പലായനം ചെയ്ത ഇവര്‍ ജാട്ടുകളുടെ കൈയില്‍പ്പെടുകയും കൊല്ലപ്പെടുകയാണുണ്ടായത്
