The documentary is based on original interviews and audio recordings, including Haring's vivid account of his participation in the New York underground art world and gay subculture. A careful exploration of the background and career of one of the most popular and significant artists of the 20th Century. With Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, Madonna, Grace Jones, aka Fred Brathwaite Fab 5 Freddy, Jeffrey Deitch, David LaChapelle, Kenny Scharf, and many others.

  • Keith Haring - The Real Artist

    Keith Haring was born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, Pennsylvania. He developed a love for drawing at a very early age, learning basic cartooning skills from his father and from the popular culture around him, such as Dr. Seuss and Walt Disney.Upon graduation from high school in 1976, Keith Haring enrolled in the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh, a commerical arts school. He soon realized that he had little interest in becoming a commerical graphic artist and, after two semesters, dropped out. While in Pittsburgh, Keith Haring continued to study and work on his own and in 1978 had a solo exhibition of his work at the Pittsburgh Arts and Crafts Center.Later that same year, Keith Haring moved to New York City and enrolled in the School of Visual Arts (SVA). In New York, Haring found a thriving alternative art community that was developing outside the gallery and museum system, in the downtown streets, the subways and spaces in clubs and former dance halls. Here he became friends with fellow artists Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat, as well as the musicians, performance artists and graffiti writers that comprised the burgeoning art community. Keith Haring was swept up in the energy and spirit of this scene and began to organize and participate in exhibitions and perfirmances at Club 54 and other alternative venues.     In a single day "March 15, 1984", Keith Haring painted a giant mural as part of his artist residency at Minneapolis' Walker Art Center. Now existing only through photographic and video documentation, the orange and green wall piece was created to commemorate the completion of the Walker's then-new underground education center, and remained on view through December 1985.

    Early life :
    Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, Haring grew up in Kutztown with his mother, Joan Haring, and his father, Allen Haring, a cartoonist. He also had three younger sisters, Kay, Karen and Kristen. Keith's parents wanted to name all their children with names that started with K. Haring was interested in art from an early age. From 1976 to 1978 he studied commercial art at The Ivy School of Professional Art, an art school in Pittsburgh. He soon lost interest in commercial art, and moved on to study Fine Arts.
    At age 19, in 1978, Haring moved to New York City, where he was inspired by graffiti art, and studied at the School of Visual Arts.

    Haring achieved his first public attention with chalk drawings in the subways of New York (see public art). These were his first recognized pieces
