The full text of speech of Congress President Sonia Gandhi in Khariar, Odisha:-

I thank you all for your warm welcome. I salute this pious and historic place of Odisha. You people have struggled a lot throughout your life. Congress party has always stood by you to fight against poverty and corruption.

Rajiv (Gandhi) ji had launched KVK program for your development when he had come here. The relation of Congress with you is not of a day. When the people here were facing drought, Indira (Gandhi) ji had come and started Indiravati scheme to deal with it.

When BJP was taking away your lands in Nayamgiri, Rahul (Gandhi) ji had come here, fought for you and didn't let BJHP's plans to snatch away your rights to succeed.

Congress has been fighting for the tribals, poor, down trodden and weaker section of the society. Nobody has done it before, like the way Congress did and as a result there is improvement in the lives of all sections.

Development could have been much faster and better had her party been in government in the state. UPA government has implemented MNREGA so that you could get jobs but still people migrate from here for employment.

    I thank you for this warm welcome. Congress has always worked for the tribals, poor, Dalits, minorities and women. If our farmer suffers then the country won't develop. We have given special attention to increase the irrigation in the region along with other important things. Congress has taken major beneficial steps when you suffered from drought and flood.

    UPA and Maharashtra government have never left a stone unturned to send relief when you faced natural calamity here; whether it's waiving of loan or MSP for the crops. UPA led by Dr. Manmohan Singh has taken many historic steps for your betterment in last ten years.

    We have launched MNREGA by which rural people guaranteed with 100 days jobs. We have also given Right to Education to the kids of the age group of 6 to 14. We have also launched Indira Awas Yojana to give shelter to the needy people.

    We have taken sufficient steps for electricity, water and roads. To fight malnutrition we have launched Food Security law under which poor people can buy food grains at a very low cost. I believe such an Act is the first of its kind in the world.

Taking on the BJP, Sonia Gandhi said while the Congress was committed to work for the poor and common people, the opposition party was hankering after chair and power. The Congress President said the country was passing through a testing time and people should discern between the genuine ones and those with masks.

    Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi while addressing a Congress rally in Mangalore in Karnataka, asked the ruling BJP government in Karnataka what have it done for the welfare of the people. She also slammed the BJP by saying that it never took any serious action to fight corruption.
    “As you all know we have no control on the international prices of oil which have gone up from 40 dollars per barrels 10 years ago, to 140 dollars per barrel today. You know that we import 80% of crude oil from which we make petrol, diesel, kerosene and cooking gas. We continue to subsidise kerosene which must be done. But we have been compelled and we have no option but to increase the prices of diesel and the cooking gas. In spite of these, UPA government is doing its best not to burden the people with more hardships. As we hold the responsibility as a Government at the Centre, the state government also has some responsibility. I want to ask the BJP government here why have not the government increase the limit of LPG cylinders to a family from 6 to 9. This is what our Congress government has done in the states ruled by us. Why has the Karnataka Government not reduced the VAT on diesel, just like our Congress led governments have done? So it is very easy to criticize others but what about you (the state government), what are you doing to reduce the hardships of your people? It is your (state government’s) responsibility as much as ours” said Sonia Gandhi.

But today, I feel very sad to see that some parties are trying to damage this rich culture of unity and togetherness. They try to destroy our tradition of unity in diversity and spread hatred among people for their narrow political gains. They try to divide the people in terms of caste, religion and community. Their ultimate aim is to grab power and only people can teach them a lesson.
