55-year-old Sharon Simmons Tries Out To Be Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader
America's Team seems to have a quirky, only-in-America story on its hands.
A soon-to-be-56-year-old grandmother wants to be a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader.
"I thought about this when I was about 22-years-old," Sharon Simmons told The Dallas Morning News of the journey that's brought here to this point after so many years. "I was a single mom, and I wanted to do it."
Simmons tried out for the famed squad over the weekend and would become the oldest cheerleader in league history (the record age is 42) if she makes the squad.
And this doesn't seem to be a lark; Simmons sports six-pack abs courtesy of her fitness background.

The Carrollton, Texas, resident wanted to audition for the team when she was 22, but a number of factors -- including a lack of money, outfit, routine and child care -- forced her to give up that dream. Years later, as a grandmother, successful fitness author and burgeoning actor, Simmons tried again. She hired a former Cowboys cheerleader to help her prepare for the audition and said she was ready to compete with women half her age.

The tryout wasn't a rousing success, though. Simmons, who has been competing in fitness competitions for the past few years, told the Dallas Morning News that she forgot her routine during the freestyle portion of the tryout.
"For me, it has been about the journey," she told the Dallas Morning News.
Simmons would be 56 at the start of the 2012 NFL regular season. If she makes the team, she'd be the oldest Dallas Cowboys cheerleader in history, 14 years older than the previous record-holder.ಇಂದ avnish | 623 ವೀಕ್ಷಣೆ

Sharon Simmons, a 55-year-old grandmother, is as slim and toned as a woman half her age, and she's preparing to go head-to-head with women even younger when she auditions to become a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader in May.
"I don't see a number," she said, regarding her age. "If I do, it's just a number. It's not that I can't keep up with [younger women] in the physical part of the training."
Simmons, who has two grandchildren, is a certified personal trainer and nutritionist who began entering fitness competitions at the age of 50.
In the last five years, she's participated in more than 20 competitions, and has even won a few first-place titles, according to her website.
"To me, this is just like any other competition," she said. "There are steps to take to prepare, which is exactly what I'm doing."
Simmons, who works in commercial real estate, first began dreaming of becoming a Cowboys cheerleader when she was a cash-strapped single mother in her 20s. She had planned to try out, and even had her mother take some photos of her to submit with the application, but she lacked dance training. And, ultimately, Simmons didn't have the courage to apply.
