    Howard Carter (9 de mayo de 1874 -- 2 de marzo de 1939) fue un célebre arqueólogo y egiptólogo inglés mundialmente conocido por descubrir, en 1922, la tumba del rey Tutankamón (Tut-Anj-Amón), en el Valle de los Reyes, frente a Luxor (Egipto).

    Nació en Norfolk, Inglaterra, siendo el menor de una familia de once hermanos. Su padre, Samuel Carter, era artista. Carter creció en Swaffam, al norte de Norfolk, sin recibir educación formal; su padre le enseñó los fundamentos del dibujo y la pintura.

    Hijo de un artista pintor, aprende el oficio de su padre. Una sociedad de egiptología inglesa advierte su talento de dibujante y le propone, a los 17 años, marcharse a Egipto. Acepta. Allí, copia bajorrelieves, aprende a excavar y restaurar los monumentos, y se convierte finalmente en inspector de Antigüedades. En 1908, lord Carnarvon, un noble, entusiasta aficionado a la arqueología y dispuesto a proporcionar los fondos necesarios para continuar el trabajo de Carter, le contrata para excavar en Tebas y, luego, en el Valle de los Reyes. En noviembre de 1922, es la apoteosis: tras largos años de vana búsqueda, Howard Carter descubre la tumba de Tutankamón. Solitario y tozudo, tiene pocos amigos. Participó en la excavación de Beni Hasan. Posteriormente estuvo bajo la tutela de William Flinders Petrie.

    Tutankhamun (alternately spelled with Tutenkh-, -amen, -amon), Egyptian twt-&#740;n&#7723;-&#305;&#855;mn, [t&#601;wa&#720;t &#661;a&#720;n&#601;x &#660;a&#712;ma&#720;n]; approx. 1341 BC – 1323 BC) was an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty (ruled ca. 1332 BC – 1323 BC in the conventional chronology), during the period of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom. His original name, Tutankhaten, means "Living Image of Aten", while Tutankhamun means "Living Image of Amun". In hieroglyphs, the name Tutankhamun was typically written Amen-tut-ankh, because of a scribal custom that placed a divine name at the beginning of a phrase to show appropriate reverence.[3] He is possibly also the Nibhurrereya of the Amarna letters, and likely the 18th dynasty king Rathotis who, according to Manetho, an ancient historian, had reigned for nine years — a figure which conforms with Flavius Josephus's version of Manetho's Epitome.[4]
