നിറം കലര്‍ത്തിയ ശര്‍ക്കര വ്യാപകമായി സംസ്ഥാനത്തേക്ക് എത്തിക്കുന്നുവെന്ന വിവരത്തെ തുടര്‍ന്നായിരുന്നു അന്വേഷണം. കാലങ്ങളോളം കേടുകൂടാതിരിക്കാനും നിറം നിലനിര്‍ത്തുന്നതിനുമായാണ് മായം കലര്‍ത്തുന്നത്. അന്വേഷണത്തിന്‍റെ ഭാഗമായി കോഴിക്കോട് നഗരത്തിലെ മൂന്ന് കടകളില്‍ നിന്ന് വാങ്ങിയ ശര്‍ക്കര സാമ്പിളുകള്‍ പാലില്‍ കലക്കിയപ്പോള്‍ നിറവ്യത്യാസം പ്രകടമായി.
തുടര്‍ന്ന്, വിദഗ്ധ പരിശോധനക്കായി സാമ്പിളുകള്‍ മലാപ്പറമ്പിലെ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ലബോറട്ടറിയില്‍ എത്തിച്ചു. ശര്‍ക്കലയുടെ പരിശോധനഫലം ഞെട്ടിക്കുന്നതായിരുന്നു. സാമ്പിളുകളില്‍ മായം കലര്‍ന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. തുണികള്‍ക്ക് നിറം നല്‍കുന്ന റോഡമിന്‍ ബി എന്ന ഡൈയാണ് ശര്‍ക്കര സാമ്പിളുകളില്‍ ചേര്‍ത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. വെളളത്തില്‍ കലര്‍ത്തിയാല്‍ പിങ്ക് നിറമാകും. ഒരു കാരണവശാലും ശരീരത്തില്‍ എത്താന്‍ പാടില്ലാത്ത ഒന്നാണിത്.
തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലെ പളനി, ഡിണ്ടിഗല്‍, നെയ്ക്കരപ്പട്ടി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നാണ് കേരളത്തിലേക്ക് പ്രധാനമായും ശര്‍ക്കര കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നത്. നിര്‍മ്മാണ വേളകളിലൊന്നും പരിശോധനകള്‍ നടക്കാറില്ല. ഭക്ഷ്യസാധനങ്ങളില്‍ മായം കലര്‍ന്നിട്ടുണ്ടോയെന്ന് പരിശോധിച്ച് നടപടിയെടുക്കേണ്ടെ സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ ഭക്ഷ്യസുരക്ഷാവിഭാഗം അനങ്ങുന്നതേയില്ല. പരാതികള്‍ കിട്ടാത്തതിനാല്‍ നടപടിയെടുക്കുന്നില്ലെന്നാണ് ജില്ലാ ഭക്ഷ്യസുരക്ഷാ വകുപ്പിന്‍റെ പ്രതികരണം. ചോക്ക് പൊടി, കാരം,മെറ്റാനിൽ യെല്ലോ (കോൾടാർ ചായം) എന്നിവ ശർക്കരയിൽ മായം ചേർക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കും. ഇത് മൂലം വയറിളക്കം, ഛർദ്ദി, ദഹനേന്ദ്രിയ രോഗങ്ങൾ, ക്യാൻസർ തുടങ്ങിയ അസുഖങ്ങൾ വരും.
ചെറിയ കുട്ടികള്‍ക്കായി തയ്യാറാക്കുന്ന കുറുക്ക് മുതല്‍ കടലമിഠായിയും എള്ളുണ്ടയും അടക്കമുള്ള നിരവധി ബേക്കറി ഉത്പന്നങ്ങളില്‍ വരെ ശര്‍ക്കര ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
