London 2012 Javelin: The 11th Google Doodle of its kind

As the world continues to celebrate the biggest sporting extravaganza, Google chose to feature London 2012 Javelin competition as its latest doodle on the homepage on Monday.

The doodle with a night theme has the spotlight on a male athlete preparing to throw the Javelin in front of a jam-packed stadium.

Google featured London 2012 Synchronised Swimming doodle, depicting a team of female synchronised swimmers performing a routine on the homepage on Sunday.

Saturday's doodle was dedicated to London 2012 Pole Vault.
On Friday, the doodle was dedicated to the Shot Put.



On Thursday, Google welcomed its users with London 2012 Table Tennis doodle on the homepage of the sporting extravaganza.

On Wednesday, doodle featured a woman hockey player dribbling the hockey ball in a green turf with the Google logo in the background.

Google celebrated London 2012 artistic gymnastics men's rings on Tuesday with the doodle depicting a male gymnast displaying his craft on rings.
Google honoured London 2012 Fencing with the doodle showing two fencers - one in attack mode and the other player in defense mode - with the letter ‘L’ from the Google’s logo shown as one of the bladed weapons being used by the latter on 30th June.

    London 2012 Javelin: Google Doodle 'throws' one

    The Javelin throw event will begin at the London Olympics 2012 on August 8. Google Doodle meanwhile displays its own version.

    What was used as a weapon once, became a sport later and is an integral part of athletic events such as men's decathlon and women's heptathlon.

    In the Nordic nations of Europe - Norway, Sweden, Finland - javelin throw bears great significance. A total of 69 Olympic medals in men's javelin and 32 have gone to one of these three nations. Infact, Finland also swept the medals in the event at the 1920 and 1932 Olympics. In the 1920 sweep, Finland finished fourth too. This cannot happen again as only three athletes from a country can feature in a particular Olympics.

    At the 1906 Intercalated Games, it was Sweden who grabbed four top places. In 1912 Olympics the event was two-handed javelin where in throws from both the hands were to be made. This was the only time that such an event took place at the Games and Finland took away all the medals.

    The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) decides the size, shape, weight and the centre of gravity of the javelin. In the international competitions, the men's javelin is 2.6 to 2.7 metres in length while the women's is between 2.2 to 2.3 metres.

  • Google doodles London 2012 Javelin

    Using a run-up the athlete must release the javelin before the end of the runway, launching it with one hand held over the shoulder. The distance the javelin travels is measured from the end of the runway to the point the javelin first touches the ground, which must be within the lines of the throwing sector. The javelin must land on its tip for the throw to be valid.

    In all throwing events, athletes start with a qualifying round. Throwing in turn, each athlete gets three attempts to achieve a qualifying distance, decided by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Technical Delegates. Once all throws have been completed, all athletes who have achieved the qualifying distance go through to the final. If fewer than 12 athletes achieve the qualifying standard, the best 12 athletes go through.

    In the final, athletes have three initial throws, with the top eight after the first three rounds then having a further three throws. The athlete who performs the longest throw is the winner.

    In the event of a tie, athletes' second-best throws are compared, followed by their third, and so on.

    The Javelin throw events at London 2012 Olympics are scheduled from August 7 to August 11.

Google have selected the “London 2012 Javelin” games as part of their Google collection for the Olympics. They have already created 10 sport Doodles this Olympics.     We have created a summary of all the 2012 Olympic Google Doodles we have seen so far. If you enjoy the list please share it with your friends via Facebook or Google+.

    In our opinion Google have selected mostly sports which are not main stream sports, which should result in these sports receiving much needed worldwide attention and exposure. It would be interesting to see what effect this massive exposure will have on these events, regarding future participation.

    Our favorite Google Doodle for the London 2012 Olympics are between the London 2012 Javelin Google Doodle and the Olympics Opening Ceremony Google Doodles.

  • London 2012 Hockey: Google Displays its Sixth Olympics Doodle


    Google on Wednesday displayed its sixth Olympics doodle dedicated to hockey, India's national game.

    The London 2012 Hockey doodle depicts a female player in action holding a hockey stick and trying to hit the ball.

    Google, the search engine giant, has been displaying a new doodle everyday since the opening ceremony of London Olympics 2012 as an endorsement to the sporting extravaganza.

    The hockey events are scheduled from July 29 to August 11.
    The opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics doodle depicted 5 athletes playing different sports. The first Olympics doodle featured sports like football, basketball, swimming, fencing, running, and javelin throw.

    The London Olympics 2012, officially the Games of the XXX Olympiadis, kicked off on 27 July, 2012 and will conclude on August 12, 2012.

    About 10,000 athletes from 204 countries are participating in the Games.

    Olympic Doodle to celebrate "Archery" (July 28th, 2012). The Archery competition will call for pinpoint precision and nerves of steel. Historically, archery has been used for hunting and combat while in modern times, its main use is that of a recreational activity. Archery had its debut at the 1900 Summer Olympics. Recurve archery is the only discipline of archery featured at the Olympic Games.
