    The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) dropped a bombshell on Wednesday (December 8) by naming Rohit Sharma as the national team’s ODI captain. Hence, the veteran opener is set to take the charge from Virat Kohli on full-time basis. It was indeed a shocking decision as Kohli, while announcing his plans to step down as T20I captain after T20 World Cup 2021, had said that he would continue to lead the team in the other two formats.

    However, the BCCI selectors felt two different captains in white-ball cricket aren’t required and Rohit was appointed subsequently. Speaking on the matter, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra said that the decision was bound to happen. The commentator also explained that BCCI made a distinction between limited-overs cricket and Test matches.

    Ravi Shastri’s tenure as Team India head coach ended last month following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021. While the former Indian all-rounder enjoyed a sensational run in the mentor’s role, an ICC trophy would have been the cherry on the cake. India played three ICC events under coach Shastri but couldn’t get the glory once.

    While India qualified for the knock-out stage in the 2019 World Cup and 2019-21 World Test Championship, they couldn’t clear the group stage in the 2021 T20 World Cup. As far as the 2019 event is concerned, several questions were raised over the team selection. Ambati Rayudu wasn’t selected after skipper Virat Kohli openly acknowledged that he would be the no.4 batter in the build-up to the ICC event.

    Ranveer Singh-starrer 83 has already created a lot of hype and fans can’t wait to enjoy the film on theaters. The sports drama is based on India’s emphatic triumph in the 1983 World Cup. The movie, which is set to hit the silver screen on December 24, will show how the Kapil Dev-led side defied all the odds and lifted the title in England.
