Actress Scarlett Johansson spoke briefly at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., Thursday evening.

Her speech was probably the highest-profile appearance of her career as she joined fellow celebrities like actresses Eva Longoria and Kerry Washington in pledging their support for President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party's platform.
Her speech focused in large part, however, on getting the youth vote out to polls in November, a challenge that is central to Obama's bid to return to the White House in 2013:

"I speak to you not as a representative of young Hollywood, but as a representative of the many millions of young Americans, particularly young women, who depend on public and nonprofit programs to help them survive."

    Scarlett Johansson urged young Americans to vote in her speech at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, September 6.

    "It's an honor to be here tonight. I speak to you not as a representative of young Hollywood, but as a representative of the many millions of young Americans, particularly young women, who depend on public and nonprofit programs to help them survive," Johansson said on stage, before President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden accepted the party's nominations.

    "I grew up in New York City with four siblings. My father barely made enough to get by," the 27-year-old actress continued. "We moved every year, and we finally settled in a housing development for lower middle income families. We went to public schools and depended on programs for school transport and lunches, as did most of my friends. My girlfriends from high school to this day still depend on Planned Parenthood and often Medicaid for important health care services."

    The Golden Globe-nominated actress noted that only half of all eligible voters between the ages of 18 and 24 voted in 2008 and urged young Americans to go to commit.BarackObama.com to register and find polling locations.

    The Democratic National Convention is in full swing, with tons of politicians and eager supporters cheering on Obama in his quest to get reelected as president.
    One of the highlights slated for tonight's festivities includes celebrity speakers Eva Longoria, Scarlett Johansson, and Kerry Washington.
    Scarlett has long been a fan of President Obama—she joked with reporters in 2008 that she was engaged to him, and announced, "My heart belongs to Barack."
    She also hosted a fundraiser for Obama's reelection back in NYC in February, where she helped launch a collection of designer goods that were sold to benefit the campaign.
    As for Kerry Washington, she currently sits on Obama's Arts and Humanities committee... a position he appointed her in 2009.
    Kerry recently urged voters to, "...have our President's back {because} he needs our help, and voting is not enough."
    Eva Longoria is yet another celebrity speaking tonight, who's been VERY politically involved since her rise to fame.
    As an advocate for Latino and women's rights, Eva is also a co-chair on Obama's reelection campaign—she'll speak tonight on why she thinks Obama is the right guy for the job.
