    മനുഷ്യൻ അഭിമുഖീകരിക്കുന്ന ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പ്രതിസന്ധിയാണ് മാനസിക സമ്മർദ്ദം അഥവാ വിഷാദ രോഗം എന്നാൽ ഇത് തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ് ചികിത്സിക്കാവുന്ന രോഗം മാത്രമാണ്. ഭക്ഷണരീതി,ഉറക്കം,വ്യക്തിത്വം എന്നിവയെ കടുത്ത തോതിൽ ബാധിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് വിഷാദം രോഗമായി മാറുന്നത്.
    വിഷാദരോഗമുള്ളവര്‍ അതേക്കുറിച്ചു സംസാരിക്കുന്നതിനോ സഹായം തേടുന്നതിനോ ശ്രമിച്ചുവെന്നുവരില്ല. കുറച്ചുകാലം കഴിയുമ്ബോള്‍ ഇത് ഭേദമായിക്കൊള്ളും എന്നായിരിക്കും അവര്‍ കരുതുക. എന്നാല്‍, ഇത് സാഹചര്യം കൂടുതല്‍ വഷളാക്കാന്‍ മാത്രമേ ഉപകരിക്കുകയുള്ളൂ. ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ 20 പേരില്‍ ഒരാള്‍ എങ്കിലും വിഷാദരോഗം മൂലം ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുന്നുവെന്നാണ് കണക്കുകൾ പറയുന്നത് ! പ്രവര്‍ത്തനമികവില്ലായ്മ, സാമൂഹികവും സാമ്ബത്തികവുമായ നഷ്ടങ്ങള്‍, ചിന്തിക്കാതെയുള്ള പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍, മരണം അങ്ങനെ നിരവധി പ്രശ്നങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് വിഷാദരോഗം കാരണമാകാം. വിഷാദരോഗം ചികിത്സിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില്‍ അത് ജീവനു ഭീഷണിയായേക്കാം. അതിനാല്‍, അടിയന്തിര സഹായം ആവശ്യമായിവരുന്നു.സിറോട്ടോണിൻ,നോർ-എപിനെഫ്രിൻ എന്നീ രാസപരിവാഹകരുടെ വിന്യാസത്തിലും പ്രർത്തനത്തിലുമുള്ള കുറവാണ് വിഷാദരോഗത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനം എന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.ഈ അടിസ്ഥാന വൈകല്യം എങ്ങനെയുണ്ടാകുന്നുവെന്നത് വ്യക്തമല്ല.എന്നാൽ വിഷാദരോഗ ചികിത്സയ്ക്കുപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ആധുനിക ഔഷധങ്ങൾ പരിവാഹക പദാർത്ഥങ്ങളുടെ കുറവ് പരിഹരിക്കുന്നതായി കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. തലച്ചോറിലെ നാഡീപ്രേഷണ വ്യവസ്തയിലുണ്ടാകുന്ന ക്രമക്കേടുകൾ ശാരീരിക മാനസിക തലങ്ങളിലെ പലതരം അസ്വാസ്ത്യങ്ങളായി പരിണമിക്കും. അവയുടെ ആകെത്തുകയാണ് ഡിപ്രെഷൻ. ഇത് മാനസികതലത്തിലാണ് നമുക്കനുഭവപ്പെടുന്നത്,എങ്കിലും ശരീരത്തിൽ അതായത് തലച്ചോറിൽ നിന്ന് തന്നെയാണ് തുടങ്ങുന്നത്.ദുഖവും പിരിമുറുക്കവും മാറാതെ നിന്ന് നാഡീ പ്രേഷണം വഴിയുള്ള ചില രാസസംപ്രേഷണത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന അസംതുലിതാവസ്ഥ ഡിപ്രെഷൻ എന്ന അവസ്ഥയിലേക്ക് നയിക്കുന്നു. ഇത് ഒരു മൂഡ് ഡിസോർഡർ ആണ്.അതായത് ഒരു നിശ്ചിത ക്രമത്തിലുള്ള ശാരീരിക മാനസിക അവസ്ഥയെ ആണ് മൂഡ് എന്നുദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ ക്രമം അതിന്റെ അളവിൽ കൂടുതലോ കുറവോ ആയാൽ മൂഡ് ഡിസോർഡർ ആയിത്തീരുന്നു. ഒന്നിലും താൽപര്യം ഇല്ലാതിരിക്കുക, ഏകാന്തത,അകാരണമായ ദുഃഖം, ഒന്നിലും ഉത്സാഹമില്ലായ്മ,വെറുപ്പ്,
