Lady Gaga has shaved her head in a show of support for her photographer friend Terry Richardson following the death of his mother this week.

The famed snapper has been left devastated after his mom, Annie Lomax, passed away on Tuesday.

Gaga took to her Little Monsters website to share the sad news, and she posted a picture of her radical new hairstyle.

In the snap, Gaga appears to have cut off her long hair and shaved the back of her head, and she reveals her new look is a tribute to Richardson’s mum.

She writes, “I did it for u (sic) Terry. I’m sorry about ure (your) mommy. She has Princess Die (late British royal, Diana, Princess of Wales), but were (we are) all princess high.”

Richardson, who collaborated with Gaga on a recent picture book, posted his own tribute to his mother on his online blog, sharing a picture of her and writing, “R.I.P. Annie Lomax, my mom 1938-2012.”

    If anyone thought Lady Gaga would settle into a complacent hair groove after going "Louis Vuitton brown" last month, the singer made sure to show us that she still has a few hair tricks up her sleeve.

    The 26-year-old took to Twitter, her news-revealing medium of choice these days, to post a picture of her latest style: a triangular shaved patch at the nape of her neck. From the photo, it looks like the rest of her hair is in a bun on the top of her head, so we don't think this was a full-on crop job. Now we're far passed being shocked by basically anything Gaga does, but we were a little surprised to discover that her reasoning for the change was to mourn the death of the mother of Terry Richardson.

    The fashion photographer had posted a photo of his mother on Terry's Diary with the caption "R.I.P. Annie Lomax, My Mom 1938-2012." In reaction, along with the photo of her new 'do, the Vogue cover girl tweeted, "I did it for u Terry. I'm sorry about ure mommy. She has princess die, but were all princess high." And since we've sadly become experts at deciphering Gaga's cryptic tweets, we're guessing "princess die" was referring to her song "Princess D.I. E.," a controversial tribute to the late Princess Diana.

    Born This Way singer Lady Gaga unveiled her dramatic new hairdo on Twitter recently, explaining it was to honour her close friend Terry Richardson's mum Annie Lomax, who passed away aged 74.

    The eccentric pop star posted a photograph of the back of her head on the social network, revealing a large shaved section at the bottom, along with a caption which references her new track Princess D.I.E, a tribute to the late Princess Diana.

    Lady Gaga wrote: "I did it for u Terry. I'm sorry about ure mommy. She has princess die, but were all princess high."

    The 26-year-old superstar was keen to prove to her fans she hadn't cut all her hair off, adding a picture of her with her long brown hair in a top knot. She commented: "But we still have glamour in the front."

    Lady Gaga and renowned photographer Terry - who is best known for shooting raunchy pictures of the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Kate Moss - have been friends for years, and he was the mastermind behind her Monster Ball tour photo book, Lady Gaga X Terry Richardson.

    Terry has documented his mother's last moments on film on his Tumblr page, where he wrote: "R.I.P. Annie Lomax, My Mom 1938-2012."

    Lady Gaga is famed for her ever-changing look and collection of wigs, rocking blonde, orange, grey and pink hair in the last year alone.
