ഇന്ത്യയുടെ മതപരവും സാംസ്കാരികപരവുമായ ചരിത്രത്തില്‍ ഭിന്നലിംഗക്കാരെ കുറിച്ച് പരാമര്‍ശിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ഹിന്ദുമത വിശ്വാസത്തില് ഭഗവാന്‍ ശിവന്‍റെ അര്‍ദ്ധനാരീശ്വര സങ്കല്‍പ്പം ഇതിനുദാഹരണമാണ്.രാമായണം ,മഹാഭാരതം പോലുള്ള ഇതിഹാസങ്ങളിലും ഭിന്നലിംഗക്കാരെകുറിച്ച് പരാമര്‍ശിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.കുടിയേറ്റ കാലത്തിനു മുന്‍പേ ഭിന്നലിംഗക്കാര്‍ക്ക് സമൂഹത്തില്‍ അന്തസ്സുള്ള ഒരു സ്ഥാനമാണ് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. മുഗള്‍ രാജഭരണകാലത്ത് ഭിന്ന ലിംഗക്കാരെയാണ് ഏറ്റവും വിശ്വസ്തരായ പരിചാരകരായി കണക്കാക്കിയിരുന്നത്. പഴയ ഹൈദരാബാദ് സംസ്ഥാനത്തില്‍ അവരുടെ സുരക്ഷയും ക്ഷേമവും ഉറപ്പാക്കുന്നതിനു വേണ്ടിയും ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ഇന്‍സ്പെക്ടറെ നിയമിച്ചിരുന്നു.
