  • Tom Clancy Dead: Best-Selling U.S. Author Dies in Hospital At The Age Of 66

    Tom Clancy, a prolific writer famous for his best sellers about espionage and the military, died Oct. 1 at the age of 66, ABC News has confirmed with his publisher, Penguin Group.

    The cause of death is unknown.

    "I'm deeply saddened by Tom's passing. He was a consummate author, creating the modern-day thriller, and was one of the most visionary storytellers of our time," Penguin Group executive David Shanks said in a statement. "I will miss him dearly and he will be missed by tens of millions of readers worldwide."

    Clancy, a Baltimore native who joined R.O.T.C. in college but had to drop out because of his poor eyesight, worked at an insurance agency before turning his passion -- writing -- into a full-time job. He published his first book, "The Hunt for Red October," in 1984. The novel was later turned into a film, starring Alec Baldwin and Sean Connery. Several of Clancy's books were turned into movies.

    According to Clancy, this was the job he was always meant to do.

    Tom Clancy's writing career spanned three decades during which he became one of the most successful figures in publishing. Tom Clancy's name above a title was a calling card that conferred best-seller status on his espionage and military thrillers and inspired a dizzying array of tie-ins ranging from movies to video games. Clancy's books reveled in the technological details of spy-craft and weaponry, spending paragraphs recounting the various features of a nuclear submarine or a fighter plane.
    Tom Clancy's most enduring creation may have been Jack Ryan, the patriotic and morally upright CIA analyst turned politician at the center of more than a dozen novels including "The Sum of All Fears" and "The Cardinal of the Kremlin." The character was notable because his life and ascent mirrored the tectonic changes taking place in American foreign policy throughout Clancy's writing career, as the country moved away from Cold War brinksmanship and turned its gaze to terrorist threats in the Middle East.

    His latest book, "Command Authority," is slated for publication this December.
