Фильм прослеживает эволюцию индийской живописи от древней наскальной живописи, как в пещерах Бхимбетка в штате Мадхья-Прадеш, до средневекового буддистского искусства, распространение которого поощрялось императором Ашокой. В фильме сравниваются различные формы искусства -- от племенного искусства Индии до технически более сложных работ, таких как живопись Аджанты и миниатюры Джодхпура. Также рассматривается влияние общественных и политических тенденций на искусство. Фильм охватывает и разнообразные техники изобразительного искусства Индии -- эскизы, календарная живопись и бенгальская техника размывки. В фильме показаны работы современных художников и разработанные ими новые техники. От наскальной живописи до произведений современных индийских мастеров, индийское изобразительное искусство, если сравнивать его с путешествием, охватило около 14 тысячелетий и стало одной из богатейших традиций в искусстве.
