Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi while peaking at function organised under UMEED in Jammu and Kashmir, on the occasion referred to the progress achieved under UMEED in UP and said that when he launched the scheme in Utter Pradesh some eight years earlier many had predicted that it will not be a success but today the success of UMEED in UP is itself reverberating and speaking loud and clear that when intensions are clear and efforts sincere targets are achieved definitely. He said at present more than 10 lakh women are getting benefit under UMEED in UP. He said with this success in mind he has initiated launch of UMEED in Jammu and Kashmir to seek comprehensive welfare and economic betterment of J&K women.

"SHG helped to bring in confidence among the women participants. It empowered them" said Rahul Gandhi. Under the UMEED programme 90,000 self-help groups linking nine lakh women in 143 blocks covering 4,098 panchayats of the state would be organised in five years to address the concerns that women face in the state, and attempt collectively to improve their economic conditions.
