  • Nelson Mandela's health 'improving' - President Zuma

    Former South African President Nelson Mandela's "health continues to improve but his condition remains serious", President Jacob Zuma has said.

    After visiting Mr Mandela in hospital, Mr Zuma urged people to keep him "in their prayers".

    The 94 year old is spending his sixth day in the Pretoria hospital suffering from a recurrent lung infection.

    He became South Africa's first black president in 1994 after leading the struggle against white minority rule.
    He stepped down five years later.
    n a statement on Thursday, Mr Zuma urged South Africans to wish Mr Mandela "a speedy recovery".

    The brief statement provided no further details.
    Earlier, Mr Mandela's grandson and family heir, Mandla, said the family had "been deeply touched" by the concern shown for Mr Mandela's health.

    Mr Mandela's wife Graca Machel has been at his bedside regularly since calling off a trip to London last week.

    His daughter Zenani, who is the ambassador to Argentina, has also returned to South Africa to visit him.
    Mr Mandela has been in intensive care since he was taken to hospital on Saturday for the third time this year.

    In December, he spent 18 days undergoing treatment for a lung infection and gallstones.

    Before being admitted to hospital, Mr Mandela had been ill for some days at his Johannesburg

    The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory and Google has launched the Nelson Mandela digital archive project - a collection of the former presidents memorabilia online.

    JOHANNESBURG - Google, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory (NMCM), launched a digital archive on Nelson Mandela today.

    The annals include over 1,900 unique images, documents and videos and will continue to grow over time, said Mr Luke Mckend, country manager for Google, South Africa.

    The digital records house Mr Mandela's correspondence with family, comrades, and friends, as well as diaries written in his 27-year imprisonment on Robben Island and notes he made while leading negotiations that led to the end of Apartheid in South Africa.

    The archive will also have the earliest-known photograph of Mr Mandela, rare images of his prison cell and never-seen drafts of Mr Mandela's manuscripts for his autobiography "Long Walk to Freedom".

    Mr Steve Crossan, director of the Google Cultural Institute said: "The Mandela Digital Archive Project shows how the Internet can help preserve historical heritage and make it available to the world. We've worked closely with the NMCM to create an interactive online experience with powerful search and browsing tools, so that users can explore Mr Mandela's inspiring life story."
