  • Indonesia Executions Australia recalls Ambassador News Video

    Australia has recalled its ambassador from Indonesia after two Australian men were executed for drug smuggling.
    Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were among eight people from several countries executed by firing squad in the early hours of Wednesday on the prison island of Nusakambangan.
    Brazil's government also expressed its "deep dismay" at the execution of one of its citizens, Rodrigo Gularte.
    But the execution of a Philippine woman was called off at the last minute.
    Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso was spared after Philippines officials said a woman she had accused of planting drugs on her was in police custody.
    The families of the condemned prisoners paid them final, emotional visits on Tuesday afternoon before the sentences were carried out.
    All eight refused offers of blindfolds and were singing together in their final moments, a pastor present at the execution told the Sydney Morning Herald.
    Hours after the executions, ambulances left the prison island, taking the prisoners' bodies to their chosen funeral sites in Indonesia or their home countries.

    Father Charlie Burrows has said that Rodrigo Gularte was hearing voices and did not understand that he was to be shot by firing squad until the end.
    Gularte had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
    Seven foreigners and one Indonesian were executed on Wednesday, sparking a diplomatic outcry.

    Father Charlie Burrows said he had tried to prepare Gularte for his execution but that the Brazilian had not realised what was happening to him until his final moments.
    "I had time to get him ready because he had to be put in chains, because he doesn't like being touched," he told ABC News Australia.
    "He started to get the message, and when the chains started going on he said to me, 'Oh no, oh Father, am I being executed?'"
    Father Burrows said that Gularte had been hearing voices in his final days that had promised him that everything would be fine.
    "He believes the voices more than he does anybody else," he said.

    ഇതുസംബന്ധിച്ച് അടുത്തിടെ ലോക മെഡിക്കല്‍ അസോസിയേഷന്‍ പരിഷ്‌കരിച്ച പ്രമേയം പാസാക്കിയിരുന്നു. വധശിക്ഷയില്‍ ഡോക്ടര്‍മാരുടെ പങ്കാളിത്തം സംബന്ധിച്ച് 1981-ല്‍ ലോക മെഡിക്കല്‍ അസോസിയേഷന്‍ പ്രമേയം പാസാക്കിയിരുന്നു. 2008, 2012 വര്‍ഷങ്ങളിലും ഏറ്റവുമൊടുവില്‍ ഈ മാസവും പ്രമേയം പാസാക്കി.ഇത് ഡോക്ടര്‍മാര്‍ക്കുള്ള മാര്‍ഗരേഖയായി പുറത്തിറക്കണമെന്നും ഐ എം എ മെഡിക്കല്‍ കൗണ്‍സിലിനോട് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.
