    Doklam Standoff: The entire episode started on the night of June 8, when China’s PLA is said to have moved into the plateau and razed stone bunkers that RBA had built years ago and which were manned occasionally by them. On June 16, a PLA road construction corps entered Doklam with road rollers, bulldozers and excavators. This forced the RBA to seek India’s help as the Chinese forces were in no mood to lose ground. Thus India intervened and offered assistance and since then the stand-off continues.

  • If China raises stakes at Doklam, it will get a bloody nose: Kanwal Sibal

    Former Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal argues that while the India-China stand-off at Doklam can certainly be resolved through dialogue, it is unlikely to take place before November when snowfall will force both sides to withdraw.

    He rejects the idea of Indian troops at Doklam being replaced by Bhutanese troops as a way to defuse the crisis. He argues that this proposal first originated with some lobbies in Washington DC and was then touted as a possible solution in India. The attempt underlying the proposal, he says, is to apportion guilt equally between India and China while China clearly is the aggressor which has violated the status quo.

    Sibal predicts that China will not succeed in this stand-off and that if it raises the stakes, "it will get a bloody nose."

    "If China is reckless then it might be a good opportunity to prick the Chinese bubble," he argues, even though he hopes that the military face-off does not deteriorate any further.

    The former Foreign Secretary says that while America and American allies in the region watched Chinese attempts at extending its territorial boundaries and building infrastructure in the South China Sea, India managed to check-mate China.

  • China was wounded, that's why its cries on Doklam were shrill : Kanwal Sibal

    China does not want to settle the border issue, and if the issue has to be settled, it will have to be done on an equitable basis, and not on the basis of the Chinese notion of "sovereignty", according to India's former Foreign Secretary, Kanwal Sibal.

    In an interview with Catch, Sibal said right from the beginning of the Doklam stand-off, the Indian strategy was to leave the door open for China to retreat and save face. "If we had reacted in the same manner and the level of verbal confrontation had become even higher, it would have been very difficult for both sides to retreat, especially China," he argued.

    About why China had raised the pitched of confrontation through its official media, Sibal said with a laugh: "When somebody is wounded, they cry out loud. So I think China was wounded and its cries were very shrill. Since we were not wounded, we did not have to cry so loud."

    China, he said, had to save face, as its calculations reflected in its threats and ultimatums to India failed.

    "They had the feeling that there was a disparity between the two countries - their economy was five times larger and they had a much larger military - and that therefore India would buckle under their threats. They tested this over two months and realised that this was not working. So they had to very carefully look at their options."
