According to a survey conducted by the UNICEF, child marriage has been found to be on the rise in Kerala in recent years. In India there were more child marriages in rural areas than urban.

    ശൈശവ വിവാഹം എന്നത് ഇന്നലെയുടെ അനാചാരം മാത്രമല്ലെന്നും ഇന്നും തുടരുന്ന യാഥാർഥ്യമാണെന്നും വെളിപ്പെടുത്തൽ. ദേശീയ മനുഷ്യാവകാശ കമ്മിഷന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ നടത്തിയ ഒരു പഠനത്തിലാണ് കേരളത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഈ ഞെട്ടിക്കുന്ന വെളിപ്പെടുത്തലുള്ളത്.സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ തെക്കൻ ജില്ലകളായ പത്തനംതിട്ട, ആലപ്പുഴ, കൊല്ലം കോട്ടയം എന്നിവടങ്ങളിൽ ശൈശവ വിവാഹ നിരക്ക് കൂടുകയാണെന്നു പഠനങ്ങൾ പറയുന്നത്. ഒരിക്കൽ ശൈശവ വിവാഹം വ്യാപകമായി നടന്നിരുന്ന മലപ്പുറം ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള ജില്ലകളിൽ ഈ പ്രാകൃതമായ അനാചാരം കുറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നതായും പഠനം പറയുന്നു. ദേശീയ മനുഷ്യവകാശ കമ്മിഷനുവേണ്ടി നെതർലൻഡ്സിൽനിന്നുള്ള സന്നദ്ധ സംഘടനായാണ് പഠനം നടത്തിയത്. തെക്കൻ‌ ജില്ലകളിലെ രണ്ടു പ്രബല സമുദായങ്ങളായ ഹിന്ദു, ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ മതവിഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ ശൈശവ വിവാഹം പ്രകടമാണ്. ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളിൽ 43.3 ശതമാനമായും ഹിന്ദുക്കളിൽ 40.3 ശതമാനമായും ശൈശവ വിവാഹം കൂടിയിട്ടുണ്ടത്രേ. മുസ്ലിം സമുദായത്തിൽ വളർച്ചാനിരക്ക് വെറും ആറു ശതമാനം മാത്രം.ശൈശവ വിവാഹം കൂടുന്നതിൽ മതപരമായ ആചാരങ്ങൾക്കു വലിയ പങ്കുണ്ടെന്നു പറയുന്നു കേരള ശിശു സംരക്ഷണ സമിതി മുൻ ചെയർപേഴ്സൻ ശോഭ കോശി. പ്രായപൂർത്തിയാകുന്നതോടെ വ്യത്യസ്ത മതങ്ങളിൽനിന്നുള്ള പങ്കാളികളെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്ന പ്രവണത കൂടാമെന്നതിനാൽ നേരത്തെ വിവാഹം നടത്താൻ മാതാപിതാക്കൾ താൽപര്യപ്പെടുന്നതായി ശോഭ കോശി വിശദീകരിക്കുന്നു.തങ്ങളുടെ അറിവില്ലാതെ പെൺമക്കൾ പ്രണയ വിവാഹം ചെയ്യുമോ എന്ന പേടി മാതാപിതാക്കളെ ശൈശവ വിവാഹത്തിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടെത്തിക്കുന്നു.
