Fury over the killing of an unarmed teenager by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, has spread to some 90 cities across the US - from Washington to Los Angeles. Demonstrators all over the country demanded that security forces be held accountable for their actions. Despite the demonstrations remaining largely peaceful, police made several arrests.

    Authorities will work to ensure the safety of the police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon said Friday, as police met protestor demands and named the officer.

    The officer who shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown on Saturday afternoon outside an apartment complex in Ferguson is Darren Wilson, who has served six years on the force with a good record, Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson said at a news conference Friday.

    Jackson said there had been a report of a robbery in the area just before Wilson encountered Brown walking down the street near an apartment complex.

    The deadly interaction was swift: Jackson said Wilson encountered Brown at 12:01 p.m. and had shot him by 12:04 p.m.

    Police had held back naming Wilson so far because of fears he could be harmed amid a volatile and sometimes-violent week of angry protests that have followed Brown’s death.

    Authorities have said Wilson was placed on paid administrative leave after the shooting.

    Nixon told ABC News Friday the officer would be protected against any possible retaliation.

    “I think that will be a step on the road to healing here and justice,” Nixon told ABC News.

    WASHINGTON - U.S. officials Friday identified the soldier accused of killing 16 civilians, including women and children, in Afghanistan as Army Staff sergeant Robert Bales.
    Media reports Friday cited U.S. officials, whose names were not reported, as saying Bales, 38, was flown from Kuwait to a U.S. military detention center at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
    Afghan President Hamid Karzai told the families of the people killed by the U.S. soldier he distrusts the U.S. military's version of what happened.
    Karzai said the killing spree has pushed U.S.-Afghan relations to "the end of the rope," CNN reported. He said U.S. officials appeared to be withholding information.
    Bales reportedly left an outpost in Kandahar province, Camp Belambay, and shot nine children, three women and four men in nearby villages Sunday.
    "We tried to talk to the soldier involved, but there was no cooperation from America," Karzai told the families. "Based on what you are saying, the killer was not just one person."
    Karzai said Afghan investigators are suspicious of U.S. video footage captured by security cameras, CNN said.
