देश की राजधानी दिल्ली और वाराणसी दुनिया के 20 सबसे अधिक प्रदूषित शहरों में से एक है। इस सूची में भारत के 14 शहर शामिल हैं। विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन ( डब्ल्यूएचओ ) के आंकड़ों से इसकी जानकारी हुई। इन शहरों में 2016 में प्रदूषण का स्तर पीएम 2.5 स्तर पर था। आंकड़ों में यह भी कहा गया है कि दुनिया के 10 में से 9 लोग श्वसन के दौरान प्रदूषकों के उच्च स्तर वाली वायु ग्रहण करते हैं।

    ലോകത്ത് ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ അന്തരീക്ഷ മലിനീകരണം നടക്കുന്ന 20 നഗരങ്ങളില്‍ 14 എണ്ണവും ഇന്ത്യയിലെന്ന് ലോക ആരോഗ്യ സംഘടനയുടെ (ഡബ്ലൂഎച്ച്ഒ) റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട്. രാജ്യ തലസ്ഥാനമായ ന്യൂഡല്‍ഹിയാണ് ഏറ്റവുമധികം മലിനീകരണം നടക്കുന്ന നഗരം. 2016ലെ പി.എം2.5 ലവലനുസരിച്ചുള്ളതാണ് റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട്. 14 മില്ല്യണിലധികം ജനസാന്ദ്രതയുള്ള നഗരങ്ങളിലെ വായുവിന്റെ ഗുണനിലവാരം താരതമ്യം ചെയ്താണ് പഠനം നടത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്.സള്‍ഫേറ്റ്, നൈട്രേറ്റ്, ബ്ലാക്ക് കാര്‍ബണ്‍ തുടങ്ങിയവ കൂടിയ അളവില്‍ അടങ്ങിയ വായുവാണ് ലോകത്തെ പത്തില്‍ ഒമ്പതു പേരും ശ്വസിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടില്‍ പറയുന്നു. 17 ദശലക്ഷം ആളുകള്‍ തിങ്ങിപാര്‍ക്കുന്ന ഡല്‍ഹിയില്‍ മലിനീകരണം ഗുരുതര ആരോഗ്യ പ്രശ്‌നങ്ങളാണുണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്. വീടുകളില്‍ നിന്നും കൃഷി, വ്യവസായം, വാഹനങ്ങള്‍, കല്‍ക്കരി കത്തിക്കുന്ന പ്ലാന്റുകള്‍ എന്നിവയും മലിനീകരണത്തിന് കാരണമാവുന്നു. ഓരോ വര്‍ഷവും എഴുപത് ലക്ഷം ആളുകളാണ് മലിനീകരണം മൂലം മരിക്കുന്നത്.മലിനീകരണത്തില്‍ രണ്ടാം സ്ഥാനം ഈജിപ്തിലെ ഗ്രേയ്റ്റ് കെയ്‌റോ നഗരത്തിനും, മൂന്നാം സ്ഥാനം ബംഗ്ലാദേശ് തലസ്ഥാനമായ ധാക്കയ്ക്കുമാണ്. നാലാം സ്ഥാനത്ത് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ വ്യവസായ നഗരമായ മുംബൈയാണ്. ബീജിങ്ങാണ് അഞ്ചാം സ്ഥാനത്തുള്ളത്.
