    നിഗൂഢമായ ഹിമാലയത്തിലെ അതിനിഗൂഢമായ ഒരു സ്ഥലമാണ് രൂപ്കുണ്ഡ് എന്ന തടാകം. ഉത്തരാഖണ്ഡിലെ ഗഡ്വാൾ പ്രദേശത്ത് സമുദ്രനിരപ്പിൽനിന്ന് 5029 മീറ്റർ ഉയരത്തിൽ മലമടക്കുകൾക്കിടയിലുള്ള ഒരു ചെറിയ തടാകമാണ് രൂപ്കുണ്ഡ് തടാകം. ഭൂമിയിലെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയരത്തില്‍ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ജലാശയങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നുകൂടിയാണ് രൂപ്കുണ്ഡ് തടാകം . ചമോലി ജില്ലയിലാണ് ഇത്. "നിഗൂഢതയുടെ തടാകം" എന്നും "അസ്ഥികൂടങ്ങളുടെ തടാകം" എന്നും ഇതിനെ വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്.നാല്പതുകളിലാണ് ഈ തടാകത്തിന്റെ അസ്തിത്വം പുറം ലോകം അറിയുന്നത്. അതിനു മുന്‍പ് ഈ മേഖലയെക്കുറിച് വളരെയധികം കഥകള്‍ പ്രചരിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഗ്രീഷ്മകാലത്തു തടാകത്തിലെ ഐസ് ഭാഗീകമായി ഉരുകുമ്ബോള്‍ മാത്രമാണ് ഈ അസ്ഥികള്‍ ദൃശ്യമാകുന്നത്. അസ്ഥികള്‍ മാത്രമല്ല പണിയായുധങ്ങളും തടികൊണ്ടുള്ള ഉപകരണങ്ങളുമെല്ലാം ഈ സമയത്തു തെളിഞ്ഞു വരും. അഞ്ഞൂറിലധികം മനുഷ്യരുടെ അസ്ഥികള്‍ ഈ തടാകത്തിലുണ്ടെന്ന് അനുമാനിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. തടാകത്തിന്റെ പ്രാന്ത പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലെ മഞ്ഞിനിടയില്‍ പൂര്‍ണമായ മനുഷ്യ ശരീരങ്ങള്‍ പോലും കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. ഈ അടുത്തകാലത്ത് നടത്തിയ കാല നിര്‍ണയ പരീക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍ ഈ മനുഷ്യാസ്ഥികളെല്ലാം ഏകദേശം 1200 വര്‍ഷം
    പഴക്കമുള്ളതാണെന്ന് സൂചന നല്‍കുന്നു .എന്തുകൊണ്ടായിരിക്കാം അസ്ഥികളുടെ തടാകമായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.1942-ൽ ഈ തടാകത്തിന്നടിയിൽ അഞ്ഞൂറിലധികം മനുഷ്യാസ്ഥികൂടങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്തുകയുണ്ടായി. പ്രദേശത്തെ നന്ദാദേവി വന്യജീവിസംരക്ഷണകേന്ദ്രത്തിലെ ഒരു ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായിരുന്ന എച്.കെ മാധ്വാൾ ആണ് ഇവ കണ്ടെത്തിയത്. തുടർന്ന് ഇവയുടെ ഉറവിടത്തെപ്പറ്റി പല കഥകളും പ്രചരിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. 1841-ൽ തിബത്തിൽ നടന്ന ഒരു യുദ്ധത്തിനു ശേഷം മടങ്ങിവരികയായിരുന്ന കാശ്മീരി പട്ടാളക്കാർ വഴിതെറ്റി ഈ തടാകത്തിനടുത്തെത്തിയപ്പോൾ അപകടത്തിൽ അകപ്പെട്ടുപോയതാണ് എന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. എന്നാലും കാനൂജിലെ രാജാവായ ജസ്‌ഥാവലും പരിവാരങ്ങളും നന്ദാ ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്കുളള ഒരു തീര്‍ത്ഥയാത്രക്കിടയില്‍ ഒരു പ്രചണ്ഡമായ ഹിമക്കാറ്റില്‍പെട്ടു മരിച്ചുവെന്നും അവരുടെ അസ്ഥികളാണ് ഇപ്പോള്‍ രൂപ് കുണ്ഡ് തടാകത്തില്‍ കാണപ്പെടുന്നത് എന്നുമുള്ള കഥയാണ് യാഥാര്‍ത്ഥം എന്നാണ് അനുമാനിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. -1960-കളിൽഇവിടെനിന്ന് ശേഖരിച്ച അസ്ഥിശകലങ്
