The turmoil within Liberal Democrat ranks over Lord Rennard deepened last night after Nick Clegg admitted that allegations of sexual harassment were a factor in the peer's decision to quit as the party's chief executive.

To the dismay of MPs, the Deputy Prime Minister dramatically altered his explanation for Lord Rennard's surprise resignation in 2009, which had previously been blamed on ill health. His comments were rejected by the peer's friends, who said he had been warned by his doctors that he could be dead within a year unless he led a less stressful lifestyle.

And last night the party's most senior female politician, Baroness Williams of Crosby, spoke out in support of Lord Rennard, claiming the charges against him had been "hopelessly exaggerated".

The furore sparked by claims that Lord Rennard propositioned as many as 10 young Liberal Democrat activists has convulsed the party, raised fresh questions about Mr Clegg's leadership and hit its campaign for today's pivotal by-election in Eastleigh.

The peer has strenuously denied the claims and said he had never received a complaint about his conduct during his entire time with the party.

    British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg admitted today that "very serious mistakes" were made over a sex scandal which has rocked his Liberal Democrat party ahead of a crucial by-election. Clegg repeated his insistence that he was unaware of allegations of sexual harassment by several female


    party workers against former Lib Dem chief executive Lord Chris Rennard until they emerged last week. But he conceded that rumours about the behaviour of Rennard -- who strongly denies groping the women -- had been "in the background" of the peer's resignation due to ill-health in 2009.
    "There were some very serious mistakes and the women were not listened to and were let down," Clegg said during his weekly phone-in on a London radio station. He said that "clearly something went seriously wrong in the organisation" as complaints dating back several years were not acted upon, but insisted: "My party has nothing to hide, I have nothing to hide." The Lib Dems, the junior coalition partners in the government, have launched two internal inquiries into the allegations, which are also the subject of a police investigation, amid a media storm which has left the party struggling to respond.

    The Deputy Prime Minister spoke at an event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day at King's Cross Station in Central London, held by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.

    "We are indeed all here to remember because if we forget of course we endanger the future by risking a repeat of the past. It's well known that guards in the Nazi concentration camps would torment their victims by saying 'no one will believe you. No one will remember. And if you say it no one will believe you or care what you have to say.'

    So forgetting would be a betrayal of what those people endured in those horrific circumstances. It would be a betrayal of the values of reconciliation which is embodied in this memorial day, and it would also deprive the generations of today and of the future of the knowledge of history which is such an important inoculation for tragedies in the future.

    I know a little bit myself from my own experience and from my own families of the value of remembrance. My mother spent many years with her sisters in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Indonesia. My brothers and my sister and I were aware of this as we grew up, but my mum sheltered us as small children of the horrific details, and it was only when we were older that she told us about everything she'd been through. It made a lasting impression on me, of everything she'd been through, an enormous impression on my outlook on things.

    Making the story even more titillating is the identity of the young man in question. Multiple sources have identified him as 22-year-old Nick Gordon--a friend of Brown's who was informally adopted by Houston 10 years ago, and whom Brown refers to as her "big brudder."

    Allegedly, Gordon, who came from a troubled family, planned to join the army after high school to escape his home. Brown appealed to her mother, who agreed to take him in. Gordon then reportedly took on the status of "man of the house" in the absence of Brown's father and Houston's ex, Bobby Brown.
    Houston's brother, Michael Houston, told ABC News that Gordon was "like a son to her"; while Gordon himself noted on his Twitter account that Houston called him her godson.
    Despite the closeness, there's no blood relation here, of course. However, many are finding the pair's relationship to be controversial nevertheless. Adding to the whole matter is the speed at which the couple's relationship appears to have accelerated.
