Carnival Ship Evacuated after Massive Explosions Light up the Sky

Firefighters and emergency officials extinguished a massive fire that erupted when two fuel barges exploded in Mobile, Ala. According to a report by CBS News on April 24, the explosion left three people with critical burns and forced the evacuation of a crew from a nearby cruise ship.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, which started Wednesday night, but initial investigations are showing that it may have been accidental.

The three people severely burned during the fire were taken to the University of South Alabama Medical Center for treatment. According to hospital nursing administrator Danny Whatley, all three remain in critical condition as of early Thursday .

Crew members have returned to the Carnival Triumph after being forced to leave the ship as a precaution following Wednesday night's barge explosions in the Mobile River.
Almost 800 crew members were initially told they would be accommodated at the Convention Center, however, they ended up at the Civic Center.

The barges are owned by Houston-based company Kirby Inland Marine. Greg Beuerman, a company spokesman, told the Miami Herald that the barges contained a liquid called natural gasoline on board- which he stated is neither liquefied natural gas or natural gas. He also told the Herald that the company has dispatched their own team to work with investigators in order to determine what exactly caused the fire.
